| I know this is an old thread, but thank you all for your honesty, the giggles and even those awkward moments I felt reading some of the posts ... great info and gives a real feel for what and how with the recovery etc. | |

I would have thought there would be no need to wipe at the back door as you are going to be pretty much out of service for a day or so there - might depend on preop diet. Having a shower at home with a flexible hose type nozzle is must for easy access to all the important places. When I'm waiting for conditioner to activate I can also use it to sing a bit of karaoke. I'm sure they have those in the hospitals should you need it also.

| I had a catheter in place and it turned out to be no big deal. It was put in while I was under. When I awoke, I was not even aware it was there (may have been the pain meds initially, though). On the third day, when the nurse removed it, it felt like I was urinating and not much more.
So, no biggie in my case.

| As far as the guys go, it is pretty rare for them to put in a cathedea, as they can just use a bottle if they are unable to get out of bed, so no major movments or repositoning required so no difficulties. You would be very unlucky to score one or have to have an underlying problem that required it. If you have converns ask as I gather it is not pleasant at all for the guys. I think as a guy you could be pretty insistant about not having one and get away with it. As for women really it sounds horrible but at our size it is for the best, they push a LOT of fluids though us in the first 24 hours, and having to be assisted on and off a bedpan in my opinion is far far more embrassing than a bit of somebody seeing what is down there while you are out to it.

| Hi Gail,
Thanks for your well wishes and also for putting my mind at ease about the catheter and knickers that is very good news. as for Friday would love to see you. Hope you're going well and enjoying the results. I can't believe after 2 years in the planning this is finally happening this week. i think I might be just a bit excited plus nervous. Can't wait to come through the other end and be sure I have no leaks.

| Hi Max
Dr T doesn't put in a catheter so you should be ok. I was even allowed to go in with my knickers on as they were 100% cotton ones.
Good luck for Wednesday. Do you think you'd be up for a visitor in hospital on Friday? Just let me know.
Cheers Gail | |

| Ha ha Sophia
I remember when I had my girls (they are twins). My specialist thought that I had conceived separately two months apart because one of them was very small. So he had half the hospital in there to watch, plus a team for each baby. Plus video!
He was quite disappointed that the reason she was small was because of a faulty umbilical cord (one artery/one vein). And I am so happy I didn't know about the possible complications before now - these days they would probably recommend a termination in some cases because of the possible heart issues, potential brain damage etc. My little daughter now has a PHD in education and is perfectly fine!

| Hi Ladies, for a "naturaller" alternative, may I suggest a glass of pear juice? It is not that high in calories (compared to other juices). A few hours and it works wonders!!!!
Now I want to share a little story with you all. A few years ago I needed a bit of surgical correction to "down there" that I incurred having babies. Post op, the surgeon came and visited me, and she said she was "so pleased" with her work, she got all the theatre staff nearby to come in and have a look at her handiwork after she had finished!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I must admit, all I could do was laugh. Fortunately I didnt' work in that hospital! Sophia

| Max, Good luck to you, I won't be back when you go in, so have a nice sleep. I think this will be the first one at least for an hour two that I will find get some peace. LOL you had me cracking up. I have to wash only in a antibacterial soap, no lotions, creams afterwards and have to remove all nail polish. (not sure why). I am sure we will be out by the time, the start all their little lookie ats. So figure you are going to the beach or pool and do what you would for that. Talk to you again on the other side! Oma | |

| the loo question: Maybe you are not drinking enough liquids, I take a senna or 2 everyday just to kep everything moving.I know senna is not the best to take, I just can not drink metamusal quick enough before it goes gluggy. So a tablet to me is much easier. Anyway give some sort of softener a go ,see how you move lol. Take the fibre challenge too if you like. | |

| Do not worry you never have to face anybody who has looked down there *LOL* The cathedea is put in by a threatre nurse and you are all positioned and covered up before your surgeon even enters the theatre. You are never awake around anybody who sees your girlie bits. BTW it doesnt hurt a bit, and saves you getting up and down when sore for the first day or so. They tend to do it on us because of our size and moving us on and off bedpans is not an easy thing for us or those doing it. You can not even feel it in. I was worried about it coming out and nah it did not hurt at all. They just deflate the little balloon and out it slides.
As for the going to the loo issues I did not settle down for an entire year. Not going for days on end was common and having to take stuff to go was the norm It is only in the last few months it seems almost normal now. I found introducing a slice or 2 of wholemeal toast into my diet most days made the difference it actually put some bulk into me.

| Oh my gosh girls! I go in for surgery Wednesday and was only today thinking I must get in the bath and do some tiding up on tassie and under arms and legs. now I'm not sure whether to or not? Will do under arms and legs but like some of you I keep very little hair on Tassie. I kinda figured to do it now as I may not be able to do it comfortably after the op. It never even occured to me that I would be knickers less and catheterised. Now thinking it through as to why you are spread eagled when they are operating on your stomach? guess I will find out when I wake on Wednesday. BTW - hanging out for a steak. | |

| Lol, Deb, I actually usually "groom" pretty thoroughly down there, and knowing I was going to be getting a catheter, and therefore be knicker-less, I had the same thought - "Is this going to make me look like a skank?" - and let it grow out a little before the op. The problem with that was, cause I got pneumonia in hospital and had to stay in for a week, by the end of my stay it was getting a bit overgrown, and of course Cohen would barge into my room at 7am and yank up my nightie or hospital gown to check out my wounds - super embarrassing. Still kinda funny though. | |

| Deb
I think there are way too many medical shows on TV that give a (hopefully not true) picture of what goes on in an operating theatre. The only thing that kept me sane was hoping they draped those things over any parts they weren't actually intervening with.
But hey - does it really matter? It isn't like they are people you socialise with.
I started and ended knickerless (and catheterless) by the way - so no surprises!

| I read it and it freaked me no end. Especially knowing that some doctors do allow undies and some don't and not knowing if my surgeon was a knicker knocker. I woke up with a catheter so I guess everybody saw everything. I do maintain some grooming of the map of Tassie too. Wonder if that makes them think you are a Skank when you are spread-eagled? | |

| Wombat !!!!
I am so glad I didn't read this thread BEFORE the operation. How embarassing! But as others have said, I'm sure the surgeons have seen it all before and don't care one little bit.
But I am blushing a little.

| thanks deb you talk away about your poos hahahah doesn't bother me. the only thing that does bother me is trying to get a great big turd to finally flush away - i'm not squeamish and have no problems cleaning toilets but this was just beyond yuk.
i think you're right - i'll give it a week and see what happens - good to have someone else's opinion.
the relative i wasn't so much personally involved with - sad but more so shook the family up and that's what affected me more (lots of travelling with my husband etc)

OMG i wish I hadn't ventured into this thread, I *really* didn't need to know that choice bit of information. No wonder surgeons think their patients look good at their one month appointments! :[img]http://sm :[img]http://sm :[img]http://sm
