| see i am 8 weeks post op and i dont have this trouble, i can still drink a bottle of wine and feel perfectly fine with no drunkeness or hangover the next day... HOWEVER i eat little things like crackers and cheese the whole time i am drinking so the food absorbes most of the alcohol before my body does... this was recommended by my dietician, but i have always been able to drink a fair bit if i ate with it! | |

| Hi everyone Talking of alcohol and Christmas and New Year.... I too only drink 1 glass (2 max) and I feel intoxicated which I don't know why? Smaller stomach, quicker absorption? Any ideas? A new question though, when I drink the 1 glass, I wake up with a hangover the next morning like I've had lots of drinks the night before. A bit perplexed how the tummy could be doing this. How does everyone else feel the day after 1-2 drinks? Thought this might be a good time to ask after the holidays | |

| Hi I have been "experimenting" with alcohol, and I reccon I can only drink about a quarter or less of what I would have drunk pre op..I havn't drunk beer, ( I always thought it had too much gas in it) but wine goes straight to my head..Don't mind the feeling BUT I have been very wary of driving even after only 1 drink..I think as already suggested, invest in a good breathaliser and use it wisely..

| There is no hard and fast rule, If you were dead keen on drinking any and driving Id say invest in an Australian standards alcohol breathalyser (NOT A CHEAP ONE) but be aware none are exact, and they do need maintenance- ie yearly calibration to be anywhere near accurate. However If at all possible leave the car at home, take turns at being designated dan, or public transport all the way. Alcohol metabolises differently for every person, and there is no hard and fast rule. you may feel ok but in fact are quite over the limit, or vice versa, so don't chance it! (BTW In my job we do alcohol testing for people, and I know a fair bit about breathalysers, and cheap ones are NEVER accurate, and an Australian standards one is expensive, and takes a fair bit to maintain as well- postage to and from the business and money to calibrate it) | |

| Just wondering about drinking post sleeve, I get drunk on one glass of wine quickly but sober up just as quickly. Does anyone know how this affects my Blood alcohol limit? For example if I have two glasses of wine would I still be able to drive. | |

| Of course alcohol does impede weight loss, but it doesn't stop it, I like a drink, and do drink too much, it was something that worried me a lot at the beginning, but I drank at about 2/3 weeks post op and I stick mainly to wine, I do go out with friends drinking and life in that way has resumed as normal, I am sure that I could have lost more and quicker if i didn't because beware of eating and drinking alcohol at the same time...it can be end in over eating! I know if I have been doing too much socialising I make sure I go out for a run/power walk for at least an hour the nest day, it sweats it out and makes you feel better and helps you to shed more pounds. | |

| At the risk of sounding like I am not taking WLS seriously...I had my op on Feb 9 and I started drinking 1 or 2 beers about 3 weeks after. I never had an issue with carbonated drinks either.
A few weeks after that I was back to normal and could still drink like I used to. This weeked I am going to a wedding with mates and there is going to be a fair amount of drinking done. I love hanging out with the boys.
I am aware that I can kill my weight loss by drinking too much, so I don't drink everyday, in fact I may go weeks or a month or two without a drop, but I enjoy going out to the pub with mates, and I don't plan on giving that up. Life is meant to be lived.
I no longer drink coke or V Energy drinks anymore, so I hope that offsets my alcohol intake in calories.

That was until last saturday when i went on a girls sleepover ( girls from work) I had 1 midori and lemonade, 3 vodka mudshakes and 1 vodka cruiser over a 12 hour period ( we started at lunch time and went to bed at 1am....i must say i was quite tiddly after the first 3 drinks (over about 4 hours) but it was fun...lol

| Hey Stimpy, This was one of my original questions as I work in the Wine industry. I found it relatively easy to have the occasional drink if it was wine but carbonated softdrinks as mixers were and still are more difficult. I'm not drinking at all now because I'm pregnant but before I found I would have the occasional drink with friends and yes it only takes a couple and you start to feel that tipsy feeling come on. My surgeons advice to me was that I would become a very cheap drunk so if I want a drink make sure it's something good and that I really enjoy it. As with most things with this op - in time you will adjust to the changes and your stomach will settle over that initial 12 month period. I wouldn't worry, you will be able to enjoy a drink with friends. | |

| Hey Stimpy
Don't fret too much, you will still be able to enjoy the odd alcohol beverage post surgery, but you may find that you will be drinking less to feel any effects. I still enjoy the odd drink, although I am only a social drinker and rarely drink even then, I even had a bourbon and coke about a month post op. I think the thing to watch will be your tolerance and the calories etc, so if you do have a drink, just be very careful. I know some people now feel intoxicated on just one drink post op. Anyway good luck.

| I am getting ready to have the VSG in a month or so. I drink now socially and I know I will have to give that up and I am ok with that. I'll be honest and say that I do enjoy my mixed drinks from time to time. Captain and diets lol.
Say in a year from now once I am on track and doing well will I be able to have a few drinks with friends again? I know my health is more important but sometimes ya gotta have a little fun.
I know this post sounds bad but I was just wondering how people have handled alcohol after surgery.
Thanks and have a good week.

| I had a sip of wine 5 weeks out, not even a quarter of a glass. I also had some kaluaha and milk about that stage as well. Just be careful tho as your stomach will not have as much food in it to absorb the alcahol so you can get a bit of a rush. I would not have any more than a sip and drive until you had it very well tested. I got rather silly on a glass of red about 4 months out. I now drink with no problems at all but do so for the most part in moderation. I have only broken that rule twice and had more than a couple of glasses. Both times I drank a bottle of wine over an evening, and oh I felt shocking the next day. I found the acid was just way to much for my stomach in that amount. It was not like a headache hangover just a total stomach felt vile one. I also have to say that you might need to be careful with those alchipops like bacardi breezers etc. I found more than one of those on an empty stomach actually produced a dumping sensation in me. This was like just a few sips of the second bottle. I felt really vile. this has happened twice now. So I now think they are something that is not a good idea for me unless I have food in my stomach and stick to one.

| Im going to a hens night on the weekend, and was told by the dietician that it was fine if I tried a glass of wine. But she did warn me to be careful as I would probably get pretty drunk if I drank the whole thing, as I wont have the food in my stomach to absorb it.
I dont actually drink wine anyway, so I doubt that I will be getting anything to drink, as bubbles are still out.

And I'm talking about alcohol in moderation of course!

| I learned about alcohol about 2 days ago. I am keeping my surgery a secret (shhh!) from neighbors and friends and such. Understand, I am not ashamed, but I live on a military post and the women around here are the absolute worst with catty-ness and just general bad attitudes and gossipping. Well, my husband had a friend over and everyone was taking shots and he asked if I wanted one and at first I passed on it, but I started feeling pressured (like a teenager) to do it, so I didn't seem suspicious! Well...I took a shot of tequila and it literally took 5 minutes before I actually felt it hit my pouch and it BURNED!! I silently excused myslef to the bathroom where I regurgetated it (sorry, TMI, I know!). Let me tell you, when I felt that burn, I panicked because I am only 20 days out from surgery, I thought for sure it was burning a hole in my pouch, lol. Neddless to say, even after getting it out of my stomach I was still pretty tipsy! I used to be able to drink so much before feeling it and now the smell of it gets me a little off. lol | |

| Hi Sharron, Be carful of your alcohol intake in the early stages as a lot of people find they turn into "1/2 pot screamers" as it hit's them quickly. After that it's like everything else you do it's about what your new stomach can handle & all those luxury's in life in moderation. | |
