| Well, I'm up to the dreaded hair falling out stage!! I thought I may be one of the lucky few that skip this stage but OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, my body wants me to have the full gastric sleeve/weight loss experience. My hair has now been cut by very skilled (don't worry I paid thru the nose for this) hairdressers. I now call them hair doctors and for the amount I paid I shld have been able to claim on private health insurance!! Just wanted to share. | |

| I was worried about hair loss early on as I have superfine thin hair anyway... and about 3mths post surgery I started to loose heaps, every time I ran my hand through my hair I I would loose fistfuls. I am happy to say it stopped around the 6mth mark & although it is thinner atm it was an even thinning so it is not noticable unless you really look... I also noticed this weekend I have lots of short (1") regrowth. Strangely enough, my sister has lost more hair in the few months since the birth of my niece than I have through this surgery (mind you she had very thick hair to start with). | |

| It's worst from 3-6 months postop. You can ensure you have sufficient protein and you can take zinc/biotin although I haven't seen clinical evidence that they work. I don't know of anyone who went "bald" although several had severe thinning. | |

| Aren't mothers wonderful LOL
Sorry I can't help I didn't lose any. Some do and some don't but make sure that you are getting heaps of protein. I was absolutely manic about it, don't know if that made the difference or not.

| I know that hair loss is part and parcel of having bariatric surgery, but OMG, Im really worried Im going to go bald. I am 4 months post op, and am losing hair by the handful I have waist length hair, and I fill up the hairbrush ever time i brush my hair.... I know its a small sacrifice to make, to be healthy, but I just wondered if anyone can tell me around what month does it stop falling out, and does your hair grow back ?? And is there anything i can take ( vitamins or something) that will slow it down.... My mum has offered to knit me a beanie thanks Mum !!!!!! | |

Red...I've said this before...but your hair looks fantastic....love the new hair cut...
good luck all

| I'm not losing hair after sleeving (yet... I'm just 3 months out), but when I was younger and even more foolish, I put myself on a 600 calorie-a-day diet for two years (AKA anorexia).
My hair thinned significantly during the first 6 months, but it got over its panic and grew back. Just proves that hair is stupid: there was good reason to panic.
But on the plus side, I'm now 30 years older than I was then and there's no sign I'm going bald. In fact, my hair is so thick it may be visible from space (especially as I have a ranga afro). I'm fairly sure you'll find your hair loss is temporary.
Oh... and because my hair is so curly and winter makes it frizz, I'm experimenting with what's called a "no poo" technique (meaning no shampoo, and no products with with sodium laurel sulphate in them). For practical purposes, that means using a conditioner that's sulphate free to wash your hair instead of shampoo. Conditioner's got surfactants in it, so it cleans well enough, and doesn't strip natural oils out of your hair, reducing fragility, breakage and frizz (apparently. I did mention that I was experimenting, didn't I? I'll get back to you in a few months).
It's working for me so far, but I have hair like Billy Connolly and/or Sideshow Bob. If you're really lacking volume in your hair, it could make it cling to your head like slimy seaweed. | |

Me too Red, interesting as we were sleeved round about the same time. I've noticed it the last couple of times I've washed my hair. Not overly concerned at this stage as my hair is quite thick. Also taking Biotin, as well as my Centrum multivitamin. Not much more you can do really. Oh, & also keeping a close eye on my protein intake. Have 'upped it' by having 2 scoops of powder in a cup of skim milk. Then using this in my cuppa's throughout the day.

| Losing masses of hair is the only bad thing I've found from this wls! Honest. I've never been so scared about something in my life as I have been about going bald! Well, maybe not totally bald, but being visibly able to see my scalp through my severe lack of hair! This started about the 3rd month, and I'm well into my 5th month now. All the above "experts" say hairloss can go for "about 6 months"??? It comes out by the handful when I wash it... and when I comb it... dry it... need I go on? After talking with dietician, nurse, doctor and hairdresser and having a headfull of information [not hair :(] This is what I've gathered:- We need proteins. So... I now take, every morning, Musashi 92 protein powder, Swisse Hair, skin and nails, Caltrate Plus - which has added zinc [ for calcium. Don't forget that one ladies and gents!] and an extra mild iron suppliment [until they're all gone]. I got my hair coloured the other day, cause I got mega greys in it. My hairdresser said that the colourant has a treatment in it too, which should also help. When she washed the dye out she also noticed the amount that's falling out But. The best thing she said... she noticed regrowth!! Which I can also now see cause it's dyed, not silver/grey! Yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!! At long last!! * huge sigh of relief!!* | |

| Im not sure if anyone has actually gone bald from having sleeve surgery...but personnally I know that my hair is growing back as I have hair that is about 2 inches long where I know I was thinning a bit. I think I started losing it at about the 3 month mark and i'm now 9 months out and have stopped losing hair. I must have stopped losing at about the 6 month mark if I have 2 inch regrowth. I'm not a tablet taker and took nothing for my hair. | |

| Yep hair loss is common after surgery and weight loss and I certainly lost a fair bit at the 3-6month mark. I took blackmores hair, nail and skin product and my hair seems to be fully restored now 20months out and has been for at least 6 months I think. So don't fear it will grow back. In fact I am still taking the hair skin and nails product cause now I am menopausal so figured it wouldn't hurt to continue them, plus my nails grow super fast as well now. | |

| I read something interesting on the bandits board today. That a side effect of anti reflux meds can be hair loss and that it can continue for 6 months after you stop them. Now THAT is something I have NOT checked, NOT verified with a doctor or a pharmacist. You can put your brand of reflux meds into a google search plus the words side effects and see what you bring up to give you a quick idea. The worst one was Nexium from what I gather for hair loss. But I can not stress enough I have not verified this and it could be 1 in 10,000 users get 6 hairs fall out or something stupid like that.
