| Dont worry about hairloss too much... there are some suppliments that you can take, ask your surgeon or chemist. As a hairdresser, I see this all the time usually a few months after an anaesthetic . The damage to the follicle is done inside the head before the hair even grows, after all the hair is dead anyway. The new or disconnected hair is usually right behind the falling hair , infact it usually pushes it out and so therefore even if you experience thinning hair your new hair is on the way ! Due to weightloss this can be slightly worse and so keep up the protein which increases keratin , which is hair protein. Try to limit he amount of styling that you do and keep your hair trimmed. Dont pull your hair back too tight and use good quality shampoo and conditioner. Now is not the time to use bargain basement products ! not that any of you would! If you are a blonde try and stick to having your regrowth only done and ask your hairdresser if they might consider only using tint and not bleach for one or two visits. If you are a brunette or covering grey try using a semi permenant color as it is more gentle . Ask your hairdresser if they can use a shampoo-based color which wont last very long but will condition your hair and wont damage it. Over a few months your hair will improve and eventually get back to normal just in time to have a new look to go with your new body, yippeeeee ! | |

| Hey, I'm 3 months post op and I've noticed a slight increase in hair loss lately but nothing too bad and I've seen posts that it peaks around 4 months. I notice it more after days when I haven't eaten much protein the day before (naughty I know!) - don't know if there is a connection or not but I try to eat my protein, take my vitamins etc to keep healthy anyway. I have medium - long hair so it hasn't been noticeable? | |

| Hello! Post op I was advised re hair loss. I was also told that my cycle would change. That would have been a shock!! I had a hysterectomy 2 yrs ago!! Strangely enough it was that op which conquered my fear of surgery! Also it was the comment about my size being a challenge during that op that spurred me on!! Shampoo with care guys! | |

| Yes indeed.
I started noticing hair loss around the 3-4 month mark. I'm now at 6 months and it seems to be slowing down. So it may be that no matter what you do, the shock of the operation will cause that to happen. There was a link in my post about the WHY of hair loss, as well as the ways to avoid.

| Caz did post a few weeks maybe a month ago listing what everyone else has recommended and why, so you can trawl through that and have a read. I have noticed I'm losing a bit more than the normal few hairs when I wash mine, but I made my mum promise if it looks weird she would tell me, its long down around my shoulders, and usually up in a ponytail, so not too noticeable unless I straighten it, and you get the wispy flyaways... I am not too worried, everyone says it seems to grow back after an adjustment period... oh by the way I'm just over 3 months out from surgery...in case you wondered time wise! | |

| you are right about the ghd's bushgirl. bella, they are the only straighteners that have negative ions which is supposed to make your hair healthier while all other straighteners are and do the opposite. (please don't ask for anything more scientific than that, as i will plead blonde!!) GHD does have a good website which will tell you more if anyone is interested.

| GHD's are the best in the business... appaently, I lived witha hairdresser for a couple of years, and she swears by it not wrecking peoples hair even with everyday usage, she does it almost every day! Something to do with negative ion's and the plate used for warming is supposed to be the best ever. I got one, but I used it about 6 weeks out, and I noticed I had a fine fuzz of regrowth, after my trip to the hospital on a drip, I lost a bit of hair then because I had no protein for about 2 weeks... Its growing back though, but im keeping it pulled back because I don't like the fuzz regrowth! I'm finding I get greasy patches though, I have never had greasy hair, and normally washed once every two days in summer, three or four days in winter, but even by the afternoon I have a greasy patch back on crown, not so noticable if I pull my hair back, but annoying much the same. My hair is a inch or so past my shoulders, and if it werent so cold Id go short! | |

| Hi Sophia,
I am 4 1/2 mths post-op & have noticed thinning of my hair the past 2 weeks.....but it hasnt been falling out in copious amounts like some people speak of.......it may yet happen to me so i have my fingers crossed....but i could be lucky & this is the worst its going to be......
aaaaaaaaaanyhoo......I had foils done yesterday......I was absolutely petrified my hair was going to be weakened by the chemicals & fall off...foil & all to the floor with a loud splat.......how the dickens would i explain that !! cripes.....people would want an answer if 20-30 foils laden with hair all just started sliding off my head & splatting to the floor....its not a sight one wold want to see in a hairdressers !
But i made it home safe.......hair & all.......i've washed it today & styled it & it seems just fine.
I dont know about the chemical content used in foils & the cap.......but the methodology of foil application is waaaaaay milder than the cap option & the most rigorous part is the hairdresser combing your hair. I had bleach & 1 honey blonde colour applied as a half head of foils.
Please dont take my comments as a guarantee that the chemicals wont affect your hair.......just relating my experience with post -op hair thinning & foils worked out okay for me.....
hugs gal !
ps..... Tracey - why a GHD hair straightener ?
hugs to you too gal....

| Subject: Taking 1000 mcg Biotin to reduce hair loss. Fri 31 Jul 2009, 3:34 pm | |
| Worried, about hair loss from the 3rd month on as I read occurred. I began taking Biotin along with my vitamins and B12 right after surgery. I was told by the vitamin shopped clerk, that his customers were advised by their docs to take Biotin (1000 mcg) per day. So far, I have only had hair loss from my tangled hair being combed and I am 4 months out from surgery at this time and so far it seems to be working. Oma | |

| I had my sleeve in january and i had alot of hair loss and now I think about it, i would say in the last 8 weeks i have hardly had any hair loss. It does slow down and a good cut and colour will get it back into top form. It's a short term price for a long term weight solution.
If worst came to worse, i know someone who lost all her ahir through stress after her husband died. I didn't know until she told me she wears a wig. If it got to that, well yes, it would be hard to get to used to initalkly but it is possible to adapt and would be a small price to pay for being a skinny chops anyway. |

| sophia, i just asked my daughter who is a hairdresser and she said foils, most definately. her words were pulling it thru a cap would be death.
there are two types of hair loss we could be dealing with. if our hair becomes dull and brittle from sudden weightloss or poor nutrition it will snap and break (but no bald spots ) but if the hair folicles are dying from medications , lack of nutrients etc. then it will fall out from the roots. a semi permanent colour will not penetrate into the roots but I have just had a permanent colour cause my hair is dull and brittle and I wanted to get back that healthy looking shine again. I have noticed my hair is getting a little bit thicker around the crown as for the first time in months I need a haircut, or a bit of styling anyway. oh, and girls if you are using a hair straightener please make sure it is a ghd.
as with our gps and surgeons, all hairdresses will have a different opinion based on their own experiences with previous clients but I hope this helps a bit.

| I'll ask her next time, but I think its just her experience rather than knowing any background reason for it.
I've had times when my nails went brittle from poor diet, maybe the hair just doesn't get formed properly.

| According to my hairdresser, the hair falls out because it gets brittle after WLS (or on a high protein diet). She didn't say to stop having it coloured though. I would hope that if you hair starts snapping when pulled through that your hairdresser would stop. | |

| Hey there, I'd really appreciate some advice - especially if there are any lurking hairdressers.
I need to have my hair recoloured, and usually I have it streaked (ie pulled through cap with crochet needle :)
However, I am really worried if I go for streaking, all my hair will simply be pulled out!!!!
Should I go the streaks??? The hairdresser doesn't think it will be a problem, and reckons the Foils will be just the same re hair pulled out.
i have ongoing hair loss since month 4... now almost 6 months, and hoping it will slow soon!!

| Thanks Caz ! Im going in to Townsville for a follow up appointment with my surgeon (the wonderful Dr. Bovey ! teehee) on Thursday & will do a reconnoitre through the shopping centres for it then..... If i cant find it i will take you up on your lovely offer....... Im more thinking it might be helpful for Paul as he is starting to 'thin' out up top ! yikes ! He has beautiful silver & dark grey curls that remind me of ocean waves on a dark stormy night - (they are getting to be very silvery waves - hehe)....but cos of all the stress he has endured this year & most of last year his hair is starting to fall out on the crown......no bald patches yet...but its definitely thinning out up there....whereas around the crown the curls are still relatively thick............. I thought if the shampoo you mentioned is good at stopping hair loss....he NEEDS it ! hehe......being a male he wont do much himself to prevent it or slow down the hair loss himself.....whereas im thinking ahead to which Advanced Hair studio will i have to book him into in a few months time... yeah yeah.....lol If he does go bald up top I'm going to dye his remaining curls blue....... Love ya... xx | |

| Hey Caz.
I too was taking Psyllium but have found that Normafibe works much better. It's the Normacol without the added plus of a laxative. Just one of two teaspoons a day with water will have you giving the elephants in the zoo a run for their money....if you get my drift. LOL.
I have found it hard to get in my local chemists but there's plenty at the online pharmacies.
Hope this helps. Glad the shampoo thing is working out for you too.
