I will ALWAYS be there for you, nicnac! BTW, I always admired how beautiful women were from the Middle East. I lived in Al Ain, UAE for two years. I know that the women there have the most BEAUTIFUL hair under the hajib. I think that you will be lucky, and your good genes will help stop too much of your hair falling out. I hope everything goes well for you. Please PM me if you ever want to chat. Michelle xx

| Hair loss for me didnt start till around 3-4 months in. I would be blow drying my hair and turn around and the floor would be covered in lots ar hair strands. This loss continued for some months maybe till around 8 months post op and is settling down now. Luckily I never got the patchy hair loss which some members have said just a general overall thinning. Hair appears to be fully back to normal now about 10 months post op. Such a very small price to pay for losing 40 kilos!! Both my dietician and doctor said its normal and that I could eat all the protein and vitamins I wanted but it would not make a difference to the hair loss. PS they also said it doesnt happen to everyone, you might not get any hair loss at all! Good luck Jay Jay | |

| Hi nicnac.
I have actually found my hair is thicker and healthier, but I am only two months out. I just take multivitamins twice a day, and I gave myself a good haircut. It is shorter now, but healthy.

| IHi nacnic,
I certainly lost lots of hair! And from what Ive read, the hairloss is related to any major event/surgery, and this may be exacerbated by poor diet.
Surgery is traumatic for your body...even laparoscopic...and this is the main culprit.
I aimed for 1 - 1.5mg/kg of protein a day..and tried to get in all the required micronutrients and vitamins too ( I found fitday good for this in the early stages).
In the general scheme of things...I initially found the hair loss a little distressing as I have not a lot of very fine hair anyway...and I was doing the right things by my body nutritionally....did I lessen the degree of hair loss...who knows...
but you know...it grew back, and it was a minor problem associated with many more major positive changes..
Its hard not sweating the small stuff though, especially pre-op.
Good luck with your journey.

| My dietician said if we aim for 50 - 60 gms protein daily + a multivitamin then it should not be an issue... | |

| You can't avoid it. Your body often reacts to general anesthesia + massive weight loss by going into telogen effluvium and causing you to shed lots of hairs at once. The good news is, it grows back after ~6 months. Some people think protein intake or taking biotin vitamins helps, but it doesn't actually stop TE. | |

| Although I haven't had the patience to put them in and wear them out yet, I bought clip in hair extensions which you can cut to whatever length you want and they really make hair look thick too. I got mine on ebay. | |

| I've gotta say, reading this made me realize, my hair loss has slowed dramatically. I can still get a fair bit if I try and fiddle with my hair a lot, but I don't have a hair farm on the bathroom floor anymore which is progress!! My worst spot is right at the front where I part my hair, so I now part it on the other side. My thinning started @ 4 mo postop and I am now 7.5 months postop. | |

| I'm five months post op & while it's still falling out A LOT there are a few areas of new growth. That's very encouraging. It looks funny though, sticking & I mean sticking out of the top of my head. LOL. I don't care, s long as it's coming back. |

| Mine got very thin, its a common side affect of rapid weightloss....itll grow back, its only hair, if it gets really bad you might want to consider a hair piece but I haven't heard of anyone getting that bad. | |

| Hi All
I was sleeved last sep 2010 and have lost 30kg - VERY HAPPY. My only problem at the moment is my hair is falling out by the truck load and I am getting nervous as it is very thin and frizzy. Has any one else had this problem and does anyone know of a solution?
Thanks Jen | |

| Was wondering if all my hair that has fallen out has assisted my weight loss? He he. Then I would have something to show for the astronomical amounts that have accumulated on my bathroom floor and shower drain in the last few weeks. I've always had very thick hair and now I am finding what is left to be surprisingly easy to manage... and it dries nice and quickly too. It is mildly disturbing, especially as I can pull it out in pretty decent strands by running my fingers through it. I often wonder when it will stop falling out?
Then I just think of people who have had chemo and who go through this process knowing that they will lose most or all of their hair for the duration... I really don't have anything to worry about, except to remember to clean out the drain regularly. And what a small price to pay for this healthier me!

Yep. The dreaded hair loss has struck me too. I was worried to start with, but after reading thsi thread I feel better. Ther eis hope it will grow back. I have long thin fine crappy hair too & have been growing it ionly because I'm going to Bali in Oct & for the first time ever, won't feel self concious about having it braided.
But it seems I may need to get it cut short. Hmmm. My poor kids & husband are sick of finding my hair EVERWHERE, including their lunches & dinner. Opps.
Still, small price to pay. Hi There I've found that my hair loss has slowed down "a bit". I've always loved short hair so now I have it, low and behold it actually suits me. Am very happy about my surgery and wldnt go back to what I used to be!!

| Thought I was pretty clever there for a bit with my full head of hair...but last week I started shedding like a dog in summer (Im 3 months out). This happened when I gave birth to my daughter 15yrs ago, it was so bad that the drain in the bathroom was constantly getting blocked! It grew back after a few months, although I did think I was going to end up bald there for a while. Off to the hairdresser for a layered shorter cut I think *sigh. I still think it's a small price to pay for the results we will get :) Jiggly | |

| Hey Helen, Andrea & All,
I to have fine hair and I am six months post surgery and I have noticed my hair has gotten even less over the past month. I always used to het the $25 Just Cutz do and decided a year ago to go to a swanky little salon here in Sydney. I haven't always lived in Sydney and new the salon would be more expensive ... $90 which I guess is cheaper than some other little places bit wow! What a haircut! I really didn't think such drab, fine hair could look good.
I got my ever thinning hair cut a couple of weeks ago and I could tell it was thinning as my little hair angel gave me what looked like a $25 job but after coming home and actually looking in the mirror I could tell she did the best she could.
I am feeling more bummed than I usually would as we are visiting my husbands family in the Netherlands in May and meeting family I haven't met before and well, at the moment I look like I am considering becoming a Buddhist Monk!
Anyone got the number for Ashley & Martin!
Cheers,
Alison.

| Hi everyone, Thank you all for this thread. I too am experiencing hair loss. I'm just over 8 weeks out. I have very fine thin hair and can't afford to loose what little I have. But I guess that it's all par for the course. I'm noticing that it's on my shoulders and alot more in my brush than normal. Can anyone recomend a really good stylist on the Northern end of the Gold Coast. Someone who does really nice inverted bob haircuts. I'm told this is one of the few cuts that makes fine hair look thick and full... take care Andrea | |
