Me too, I've been on it for years, definitely hasn't effected my weightloss and definitely doesn't make me feel hungry

I'm on cipramil - a much better alternative to zoloft.

When I was on Zoloft years ago - I felt suicidal. It's awful stuff.

Cipramil doesn't cause hunger like other antidepressents.

Sweetbee I am new to all this but could the slow weightloss be caused by not eating enough and so your body has gone into starvation mode?? I know from other pages, as well as numerous diet experience, if you don't eat enough your body holds on to absolutely everything it can to survive...

Maybe talk to your dietician about the nausea etc?

I take my comments about not losing any weight back! the scales suddenly plunged 1.5 kilos and altogether in the last 4 weeks it comes to a total of 3.7 kilos! Its all after starting on Zoloft, and whitegold you must be one of those few who experience loss of appetite when on zoloft! And it looks like i am also one of those few!As i am hardly eating/drinking anything at all! Most days I am going with less than 500cals, I know it sounds pathetic but I am helpless if i try to force the food down my throat I get strong nausea and headache after eating.

Anyways my doubts about not being able to lose weight on zoloft have now resolved!

Hey i was on zoloft for the last 9 months until about 4 weeks ago and my weight loss has not at all been affected. If anything since i stopped i ate more and my losses slowed for a couple weeks. Zoloft used to be used as a diet drug before it was used as an antidepressant so i think just relax, take the zoloft, and even if for the first few weeks your losses slow dont stress your body will work itself out.

It's ok to have concerns. Just keep them in perspective. Your tiny tummy will stop you from eating large amounts. After two weeks on the Zoloft, your mood will improve and you will feel like being active.

Hi D'Gilz and Janelou,

Thanks for that!

I lost about 2 kilos in the first week I went on Zoloft and lost a lot of hair as i completely ignored multi/calcium tablets and i have absolutely no hunger or desire for any food.

I still don't have the appetite to eat anything. But I am just worried about different versions i read on the internet. My GP knows of my concerns about weight gain and said Zoloft does not effect my weight loss. He wanted to put me oin prozac I was on prozac for a year previously it did not effect my weight, infact i lost weight on prozac but i had very bad side effects like suicidal intentions after 6 months of taking prozac. I did'nt think prozac caused that but my GP was certain that it did. So this time he said i should try zoloft out. I have'nt lost any weight but did'nt put on either.

I am just worried and paranoid as usual.

I was on Aropax years ago (Paxil in the USA) for PMT (worked a treat) but gave it away after 9 months!

Arropax is a SSRI just the same as Zoloft, and initially I lost weight,t hen regained after a few months, the reason for the weight gain is varied:

1. People who do suffer depression often have appetite, and as they feel better, their appetite returns and they eat more (makes sense)

2. There is some discussion about the effect of the SSRI's on the appetite centre, I found myself wanting to graze more and overeating

The reason you gain weight is you eat more, there is not to my knowledge any effect on the metabolism, you just consume more food, so if you continue to make good food choices, you should be fine!

Found this on the MAYO clinic website (read the bit at the bottom, it is exactly what I said)

MAYO Clinic.com

from Daniel K. Hall-Flavin, M.D.
Weight gain is a possible side effect of nearly all antidepressants. However, each person responds to an antidepressant differently. Some people gain weight when taking a certain antidepressant while others don't.

Generally speaking, some antidepressants seem more likely to cause weight gain than do others. These include:

Tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline, imipramine (Tofranil), and doxepin (Sinequan)
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as tranylcypromine (Parnate), isocarboxazid (Marplan) and phenelzine (Nardil)
Paroxetine (Paxil)
Mirtazapine (Remeron)
Trazodone
Some antidepressants that may be less likely to cause weight gain include:

Venlafaxine (Effexor)
Bupropion (Wellbutrin)
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) other than paroxetine (Paxil) — fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), citalopram (Celexa) and escitalopram (Lexapro)
While some people gain weight after starting an antidepressant, the antidepressant isn't always a direct cause. There are many factors that can work together to contribute to weight gain during antidepressant therapy. For example:

Overeating as a result of depression can cause weight gain.
Some people lose weight as part of their depression. In turn, an improved appetite associated with improved mood may result in increased weight.
Adults generally tend to gain weight each year, regardless of the medications they take. Getting regular exercise and watching what you eat will help you maintain a healthy weight whether you take an antidepressant or not.
If you gain weight after starting an antidepressant, discuss your concerns with your doctor. If your antidepressant seems to be the culprit, it may help to adjust the dose or switch medications.

Hi,
I have been on Zoloft for about 12 months. You can still lose weight on it. Do not under any circumstances abruptly stop this medication. The side effects of stopping like this are really bad.
Although I am pre op, I have been losing similar to others when on OF.
If you need any further info or just to talk, PM me.

Hello sleevers,

due to unfortunate circumstances I have started taking Zoloft and its been almost 2 weeks since I have lost any weight at all. Apparently Zoloft slows down the metabolism and even normal people gain weight whilst taking Zoloft, if that is the case i seriously want to consider changing drugs.

So, who have been on Zoloft after sleeve and did it interfere with your weightloss?
Did you have to increase your exercise because of Zoloft?
Have you stopped Zoloft and noticed change in the weightloss?
Has anyone lost weight on Zoloft?

Please help me with thses questions as I am going paranoid with this.

Thanks.
