| Now i understand Flick,
Michael suffers from irritable bowel and as he says, Never ever trust a fart. Other than that there is not much i can offer in the way of advice apart from watch how much cheese you eat, as too much of that can cause these explosions to happen. If you are pretty sure it is not caused by what your eating, i would just look at it as your body having a good clean out, it happens to me every couple of weeks or so, then im "normal"again till the next time.

| Mandy the problem is not constipation it is the opposite. I have to say even when I was in the hospital and only on fluids for 8 days I could still go number 2's. The problem with me is I have days where it is, sorry a really TMI moment, fine, then on a random day, without a change in eating or drinking, I will be lets say scared to fart.
I have found that my bladder is not as weak butI am still wearing pads most days just to be safe.
Thanks Cat for the kind words but I think my problems are large headed babies, lazyness when it comes to pelvic floor exercises, and I have to say I still have a large stomach so I am wondering if that might be a problem with the whole bladder thing...........and it dosen't help that my boobs are leaning down on my gut as well lol

| Just came across this thread. There is a continence clinic at my work. One of the first thing the continence nurse asks is about your bowels. Apparently being constipated can contribute to urinary incontinence. Lots of people need laxatives to use their bowels, Coloxyl is a good one but if you get the one with Senna in it your bowels can get dependent on it to go.
You don't need a GP referral to go to a continence clinic, you can self-refer. They will send you out a bladder and fluid chart to complete before the appt and if you have bowel problems there is also a bowel chart to complete.
I read that something like 75% of women get bladder and/or bowel incontinene if they have ever given birth. Childbirth does something wicked to your sphincters.
Hope your little problem has sorted itself out since your sleeve surgery.

| Just wondering how you were getting on with this now Flick?
I know for myself presleeve every day i was wearing a teena lady, hell i'd bend over to grab somethink and id leak, and the number or times i'd go have a wee only to finish go into the bathroom to wash my hands only to sneeze or cough and leak.
These days however i am pleased to say, the pads are pretty much a thing of the past unless we are going out and i just want the security of knowing if it happens (and it rarely does) im safe.
As for the bowels, a glass of pineapple juice everyday is my friend, that seems to keep me regular.

| Re flick and milk. They now have different milks on the market for lactose intolerant people. I have heard that a fair majority of WLS patients end up with lactose intolerance so it might be worth trying it out. Personally I wouldn't care if I did get it since i rarely drink milk except coffee and I can go days without a coffee. On the incontinence issue... I ended up getting a new mattress coz I could see little wee stains on mine when I changed the sheets and I just couldn't handle looking at it any longer :( Occasional leak during the day but mainly at night when I am asleep and cant control it consciously :( Cant wait til that goes |

| Beckstar77 I have very good pelvic floors, this is what pisses me off. When I spoke to my doctor he wanted to send me to the gyno! I will insist in seeing another doctor and talk about seeing a gastroenterologist or urologist. Thanks for the tip Mapmar. | |

| I work for a specialist who is a gastroenterologist, prior worked for a urologist..... please please do not ever be embarrassed to talk about these things. Always get them checked out and do not assume they are related to weight. Discuss things with your GP who may refer you to a gastroenterologist or urologist..... you never know it could save your life. | |

| I too am a panty liner wearer Slojo, if I cough, sneeze just basically stand or sit or lie down I have a leak. I am hoping that with the weight loss I will stop having the problem and when my husband is trying to be abit amourous I don't freak out because I am wearing a pad. How embarresment!
As for the other issue, I think it is milk, I only have it in coffee but I tend to be abit "OFF" in the afternoons after having acouple of coffees at work. Skim milk does not seem to do it as much, but I do love my coffee and I am addicted to Kahlua and Milk, so I will just have to live with it :) Any way this is my guess and if it does not I will wait untill after my surgery and see if maybe the loss of weight might help.

| I'm glad you asked the question Flick! Since giving birth to our son, all I have to do is sneeze of cough and I have a leak. Very embarassing (not that anyone else knows it's happened) and now I've had to resort to wearing panty liners every day. When I was in the maternity ward a physio came in to show me pelvic floor exercises, she said my muscles are very strong. I was at a loss, so now all you lovely ladies have given me hope that when my weight starts dropping, my problem could fix itself!!
I don't know about the bowel question - sounds like a good idea to have it checked out by Dr, like someone said you'd like to get it fixed before your surgery.

| Don't be embarrassed - we're all friends here, and have been through many of the same things.
I, too, have found that my bladder copes heaps better since losing all the excess weight. Mentioned it to the doc, and was told that the amount of fat inside takes up the room bladder would usually use to expand when it gets full.
Makes sense!
As for the bowels, if you're sure your diet is good, and you're drinking enough water (really important for that), maybe it's time to take a trip to the doc...
Best of luck. | |

| The bladder is pretty common in us obese folks embarrassing yes, self fixing (fingers crossed) as the weight comes off.
The bowel is more than likely due to diet, but if you resort to laxitives to keep things regular you do run a risk of your body becoming lazy and not doing what it should do on its own.
Try extra fruit, and lots more water, if that fails try a produt such as Nulax it is all natural (basiclly mushed up fruit) it should help.

| I used to wet myself slightly if I sneezed or laughed and get up three times in the night. I'd assumed it was my age. However, now that you mention it, it has gone since I've lost weight. | |

| Stress incontinence is closely associated with obesity. I actually had it mildly preop, but didn't realize it was weight related until I lost weight and realized it went away.
As for bowels - well, the most important things to maintain normalcy there are water intake, fibre intake, and exercise. A "lot" of meat is not necessarily helpful there. Fruit, veggies, other sources of dietary fibre like bran, etc are helpful. There are many nutritional deficiencies that affect regularity of bowel movements, you should be able to find a good diet plan online to help this.
If actually constipated, talk to a pharmacist and they can suggest something to try. It if carries on, talk to your doctor as you want to get it sorted out pre surgery (it may get worse after surgery once you are eating hardly anything).

| I have a question to all.....
I have had a weak bladder for about six months now and I have not had a normal number 2 for ages. Does anyone know if this is a normal thing for people who are morbidly obese or am I just falling apart down below?
I hardly at processed things and I eat lots of vegies and meat, and since my band has been taken off, I am eating bread again. The only junk I eat is subway and pizza once a week so I don't think it is the food I eat.
