| Wow i feel for you mate i really do..
I weighed in at 230kg on my first visit to the surgeon about 5 months ago or more now.. But personally Ive never had an issue with exercising or walking or even stairs. Sure ill get puffed from walking up a few flights but nothing to serious.
I wish you all the best and hope you get down to your 160 mark and have the op.
I guess im lucky that my surgeon will still perform the operation given im in perfect health bar the fact that im overweight.. Ill be going in on the 17th Jan.
Keep us posted on your journey.

| I had the same problems moving such a large weight around injuries and pain was so horrible from simply sitting down or getting out of a chair. If you do your exercises after you have taken your pain meds, after a hot shower AND with some music it will help. Exercise as such will not do much for weightloss at this size so concentrate on getting yourself mobile, making any movment easier. so increase up the reps only once a week will be fine. I know for a skinny person all that I have said is the other way around but with large size comes very stiff muscles so losening them up is the way to go. I swear my ipod is GOLD to me it doubled the amount I could do. Just keeping going for one song then 2 songs etc :) Even if you drop back to doing the exercises without any weights for the first week or 2 it will still be getting your moving :)

| Hi Mike,
I came out as a geek a good 15 years ago and I'm still an active member of geek pride. I'm still fat so the name is appropriate.
WFF is Weak and Feeble Female.
I'm sure someone is going to swap that body for one you like and that person is you. You have made a great start but you have my sympathy about not wanting to go out in the cold. Spring can't be that far away!

| Hi all and thanks for the encouragement, First thing is first, Fat geek (what an unflattering user name), what does WFF stand for ??? Janey, Sue, Deb, Bushgirl & Fatgeek, unfortunately I have had to stop exercising for the past 2 days as my arms have been in too much pain, and that only at the whopping weight of 0.5 kgs, I use to be able to lift 89kgs with one arm, what happened to my body OH YER :[img]http://sm Hope to be able to continue tomorrow but just so you know I'm not slacking off (just yet), today i went shopping on my goffer and when I got of it when I got home, my left leg was all of a suddenly in pain and is still painful 4.5 hours later. God knows what happened, because I sure as buggery haven't got a clue. The joys of having a huge body, who want's to swap Well I'm going to take some pain killers and get an early night, I know what your thinking, it's Friday night and I'm a single guy who should be out on the town pulling young Chickie's for a bit of fun. Well these days it TAKES ME all night to do what I use to DO all night, and I don't have the strength to attempt it tonight. And with that I bid you a good night mike1616 | |

| Mike, well done! I have recently gone back to the gym after two months away for surgery... might I just say my muscles screamed for each day after the exercise, but damn it felt good after that. I tend to go to the gym on Mon wed and Fri mornings (it works in with work) and have tues/thurs as walking only or cardio only days. I find it helps with the muscles to let them have a rest, but only for a day! Even if you only increase by 1min a day, you are making your muscles work, and that in turn will help you! I found I lost a fair bit of muscle mass as I was nil by mouth for a week at week 3 post op, but Im back doing everything at the gym, but lower weights. I am benchpressing the 20kg bar on its own, 3 reps of 10, and I used to do 30 or 40kg for 3 reps of 15, but im finding each week is easier!... i wont increase the weight til i can do 3 x 15... Have you been doing the exercise in front of tv? has it helped with distracting you? Keep up the fantastic work! | |

| Hi Mike,
The first day is the worse and good on you for getting started. Remember the actual arm itself is heavier now and you are having to lift that too.
130kg - that's pretty good - the best I've ever managed is 45 but I'm a WFF. Interestingly I had a chat with my surgeon about bench pressing yesterday and he had some interesting things to say.
Firstly I'm not currently allowed to unless its with very small hand weights and I can't even try until 6 weeks after surgery and then I'm supposed to be "sensible" and listen to my body's feedback.
Secondly I'm extremely unlikely to be able to add any body mass until at least 6 months after surgery so I'm not to expect my progress going up the weights to be any where as rapid as usual. All the protein I eat will go on keeping to body going. Lots of reps of smaller weights instead. The same applies to guys as well.
Having said that, both dietitian and surgeon felt weights were good (but cardio is more important) as it will help preserve lean mass and assist in bone density.

| No pain, no gain so they say Mike.
Rub some Voltaren gel or Nurofen gel into those sore muscles and it will help ease the pain. Slowly increasing is the way to go. You're doing well.

| AAAHHHHHHHH Pain, Pain, please help it go away. Today I started exercising with the 0.5kg weights with my arms and now I am in a bit of pain. I only did it for 5 minutes, I couldn't keep going, my mussels started to scream. I use to be able to bench press 130kgs easily, I had no idea that less than 1% of my old training weight would be so hard. Can't I pay some one else to do this for me, some thing like a personal trainer who dose a body switch for the duration of the work out. Oh hang on, that still leaves the painful mussels after, guess that wont work then. I hate to find out how I'll feel tomorrow night after I do 7 minutes, but there's only one way to avoid the pain tomorrow night and that's not happening ...... or should I say it is happening, me continuing to exercise that is. Hopefully increasing by 2 minutes each day until I start to resemble a health looking person who can at least walk the full 150 meters of my driveway with out needing to stop or use some sort of support. Speaking of support Thanks of all so far. I will be visiting some of you folks soon. until next time mike1616 | |

| Hey, Mike Good luck with the exercise. The others have great suggestions, and I particularly like Shanna's! I was also much like you, and couldn't walk far, but all I did was try to walk a little more each time. So if I walked 20m today, I'd try 22 tomorrow, 23 the next day, 25 the day after - or stay the same for a couple of days and then notch it up a little. Best wishes Chris | |

| Mike- Both are top notch choices for you. My preference would be the exercise bike if you can only do one of them. Applesauce is so right. Put the bike square in front of the TV. If you rent- then rent a good one- Mine was about $1000 to buy- I got the Lifefitness recumbent- definitely insist on a recumbent. OK- now the bike is in front of the TV- make sure it is the best view of the TV in the house. Rent a ton of DVDs of something you like so you won't have to deal with food commercials (needless to say don't rent cooking DVDs!). Get yourself a nice setup with a pitcher of low calorie beveridge, and a nice glass, and put it on a side table that you set up right next to the bike- see what I mean- this is couch potato 101 here. If you are a music guy then get your music machine on that table. A reader- then get 3 good books on the table. Now here is the best part... ready... Think of the bike as your couch. If you get a good one - remember you can rent it if necessary - a really comfy good one - it is almost- if not as comfortable- as your couch. So....... Sit down. Thats it- just sit down. Your bike is your new home. Give those pedals a sloooow lazy spin. Mhmm - not so bad. take a drink. give the pedals another lazy spin. mhmm this doesn't hurt. maybe I can do it for 3 minutes. not too bad. bet I could do it for 4 minutes. Don't get up now. This is your new viewing station. You can even get a rolling table and put your laptop on it and while away the hours on the forum. As for oxygen, don't know anything about it- wonder if you can take O2 and spin the pedals at the same time? Don't know. Remember - you are NOT exercising, you are not riding the bike, you are sitting, and stretching your legs a bit with some gentle pedal spinning. Good luck | |

| What you want if you want to do it in your own home is a recumbent bike. No pressure on anything you sit on it like an office chair so no stupid seat up your bum. they make them to take over 200kg. You can also hire them. My other half used it to get fit before surgery as he has a shocking back. He got upto 40km a day on it and the anethetist when checking him said he was fitter than him *LOL* He just put a tv in front of it and away he went. Started with it on nice and easy and did it in 40 minute stints to start with. You could do less if you need be. He watched the entire star trek next gen leading up to surgery doing it *LOL* hence the 40 minute stints one ep twice a day :)
I was at your level of fitness or less. I did no exercise before surgery just optifast which is 600 calories a day for 14 weeks. And prepared my muscles for moving as I lost weight with a bit of gentle stretching and walking on the spot to build up some stamina. I could bearly make it out the front door and into the car now I walk upto 10km because I enjoy it hehehehe I was housebound I could not get to the shops or do anything if I left my house 2 or 3 times a year it was a miricle and a nightmare to do. Now I am never home. I still think exercise is a dirty word and wouldnt do it if you paid me, but walking I enjoy and do for just that enjoyment :)

| water exercise is awesome, I know initially the whole getting into swimmers is a bit much to think about, but when i have had bad ankles (due to being overweight at various times) The thing that works quickest is hydrotherapy. make sure the water is warm, or at least a heated pool, and specialised hydrotherapy pools are nice and warm, you won't want to get out, and you don't need to do class, just go walking in the water. For other ideas watch the people around you, and see what they do, or if you can get a physio or exercise physiologist to do a session with you so you know how to do a few things! And before you know it, you will be looking forward to the sessions, even if you get the chlorine tang odor... everyone gets it with the chlorine...! Hope this helps BG | |
