Query about Gastric sleeve with Antidepressants and also with Pregnancy

i was able to take tablets from a couple of days after surgery, obviously only necessary ones, and for me that included effexor (antidepressant) and somac (for reflux), also my thyroid medication, though that is such a small tablet it probably wouldn't have mattered much anyways.  I have found in the last 3 or 4 weeks my mood has been a bit up and down, i went and asked a pharmacist whether having had a sleeve would effect the absorption of my antidepressant he said it shouldn't have, so i have just put it down to the adjustment to eating smaller portions etc.  I seem to feeling a bit better the last week or so, which i'm glad about, if i don't keep improving i'll be going back to see my psychologist, i've been hoping not to because although she is great, i know that i tend to do more emotional eating when i'm seeing her as i'm dealing with stuff, i do now have a pretty good understanding of the issues that effect me, which does make it easier to deal with them.

I went to my doc and changed meds to soluble ones just a couple of weeks ago. I was thinking the same thing...how am i gonna swallow these tablets especially since the ones i was on were not allowed to be broken :(  So far so good on the new meds so all i have to change now is the blood pressure ones....and my thinking is I dont care if blood pressure goes up a little after surgery, most people end up off the meds fairly quick so i am just gonna watch, wait and see

Actually I have been thinking I need to get my meds checked because of weight loss. I am all of the place and maybe that the dosages are too high. Thanks for the reminder :)

Hi Claire, you sound like you are getting well prepared and good on you. I was sleeved in Dec last year and have not looked back.After the sleeve your stomach is way smaller so you absorb medications much quicker so you may need to have your dose adjusted,it is hard to tell if it will have any effact on you until that time. You do have to be wary of slow release tablets of any form as they can damage your small stomach as it only has a small area to sit and concentrate in and also no nsaids ever. I know some tablets taste really gross as i had to have some in the early stages which d to be crushed,they were beyond bitter and i found the easiest way was to have it in slighty melted ice cream at that stage.With a smaller stomach some medications can be absorbed quickly so you will just have to se how you go.As long as you keep on with your correct help and dietician and psychiatrist you should be fine,as your friend may have gone off the rails,it does not mean you will,it does take a bit to get your head around but with the proper help along the way i do not see why you wont succeed,you are already doing a really great positve step in bettering your health and have a goal to achive by having more children. Your surgeon is the best one to adivise the time to have more babies after a sleeve as they vary some what,some say 1 year and some say 2 so i would check with him first as that is the person you need to listen to.Maybe you could go along to some meditaion or relaxtion coaching before your sleeve op to ease your anxiety a little for you.You will do fine,it is only the first day you need more help but all the medical staff are well trained and do take very good care of you and you only ever need to ask if you want help or are not comfortable. I'm pretty new to this, 3 months post-op so I can only tell you what I have experienced.
I've had depression for years for me it's a case of genetic and post traumatic childhood experiences. I am well managed on meds and a psychologist. Initially - first few weeks when just on fluids I really struggled to get my meds in as they had to be crushed & tasted terrible causing dry retching & my levels did drop off but I have enough knowledge of my illness to know I had to get those meds in regardless since then it's been smooth sailing, mind you people are only really just starting to comment so I'm sure that will start to stir the emotional pot, but been working on preparing for this with the psychologist.
Just got to keep an eye on my drug levels as the BMI drops as doses may need adjusting down.
As for babies my surgeon said absolutely NOT in first 12months but after that no prob. I believe they add supplements and keep an eye on how well you're balancing your intake.

I need advice please:

1st Query: Currently my BMI is 46, scary, the more I diet the more my weight goes up as I am such a binge eater. I am 32 years old, soon to be 33, I have tried a gastic band that failed, infact I ended up putting on more weight with it than without it, I have had it removed and am booked in to have a sleeve in September 2013. Yes I am nervous. I suffer depression and have a friend that had a sleeve done a couple of years ago and emotionally he completely went off the rails for at least 12 months after his surgery. Even though my depression is managed and I have been very well for 4 years I am very nervous about having another nervous breakdown. Does having a sleeve hinder my bodies ability to absorb antidepressants???? I am under a specialist woman/pregnancy psychiatrist who monitors my medication ect so I do feel like I'm in the best hands, I suppose I just need some words of support for what I am about to have done.

2nd Query: I have just had my first baby with minimal complications despite my weight, I want at least another 2 pregnancies, is it safe to have pregnancies after a gastric sleeve operation? And how long to I have to wait to conceive??
