I'm 12months out from the sleeve and have only lost 13-14kg and can eat heaps!! Not happy. I'm now waiting to get in to see another surgeon to discuss my issues

Oh and I was not very impressed when I went in for my very first appointment the psyhologist basically told me I shouldn't be sleeping with my 15month old and that it was not good for her. That comment Definately made me 100% sure I would not be speaking to that person again

Well that's good to know in one way , at least I'm not alone but I do have to say he was very nice until I had the surgery , then he acted like I was a pain in his neck and he couldn't be bothered with me. I'll never go back there and I doubt that I'll ever trust another surgeon after this experience. It was a bit like dealing with a car salesman, when you have the money in your hand to buy your wonderful but the minute you have a complaint they don't remember selling you the car! Sadly my car is a lemon LOL!!!

Hello everyone I've just joined after reading all your great comments. My experience has been very different to that which many of you report to have had. The decision to have a lap band inserted has been the worst decision of my life, it causes me constant pain and discomfort.
I had the surgery done and soon afterwards I went back to the hospital because all was not well. Dr L was away but I went and had some tests done and was told the band was twisted and it would need to be removed. Dr Ls staff booked me in for surgery the day after he returned from O/S.
I got all the way into the operating theatre and he decided that because he could still find it and deflate it he didn't think surgery was necessary. I was so MAD I couldn't even speak!!!
Naturally I complained to no avail and so I'm still in pain and still uncomfortable. Neither the staff or the Dr have maintained contact to see if I'm ok, so I guess I'm stuck with this misery forever as I can't afford to have it fixed by someone else. I honestly wish I had never walked in the door, NOT HAPPY JAN!!!!!

Hi Kerensa,I was done by Dr Layani last oct..I've had my band done by him aswell as my sleeve..I found him lovely and his staff are fab too! I paid $4000 out of pocket but that was at a discounted rate as I had my band in and out by him..I think it's around $7000 if you have private health insurance and about $20,000 without private health...They do have a facebook page called weightloss solutions or google weightloss solutions Tugan..I had good recovery at the hospital and felt like I was in safe hands the whole time..I hope that helps a little bit..If you would like to know anymore feel free to message me Dr Laurent Layani 65317

I thought I better do another update. I had my appointment last Wednesday (25/1/12/) with Kerrie, Tarryn and Dr L. Hubby was strongly against me having the sleeve due to it not being able to be reversed. But after having my 1-1 with Kerrie then with Tarryn we changed it to a sleeve YAAAY. We are currently in the process of accessing hubbys super for the op. Fingers crossed it goes thru as my nerves are getting worse and Im afraid Ill back out.

Hey Amber,

Sorry to hear you're going through a tough time at the moment in the lead up to your operation.

I was sleeved on the 29th November last year by Dr Layani. I too have a little girl and a supportive husband and had the same fears and concerns you did. I think most people would.

I can't answer your question about the risks but I can let you know I didn't have any drains and I didn't spend the night in the high dependancy unit.

I do remember talking about the risk of leaks with Dr Layani on my very last visit with him and he was really frank and honest, but I left feeling much better after discussing it with him.

So I know it sounds naf but I would really encourage you to express your concerns with Dr Layani. I found him really comfortable to talk to once I got in the room, and he was so great on the day of the surgery. I remember being so nervous and teary when I had to leave my husband behind in the waiting room, but once I was in theatre he put me at ease (pretty sure it wasn't just the drugs). It's a bit of an alice in wonderland adventure between the waiting room and theatre too which takes your mind off things a bit... wondering which room you will be off to next (all while wearing those hideous paper undies).

Your little girl will be really proud some day when you tell her all about it. So focus on that, you're right though... you're going to feel the separation more than she will. That's what mums do. Focus on all the great things you're going to do with her once you have recovered and you're back on your feet.

By the way I found the nursing staff at John Flynn to be absolutely fantastic.

All the best

PostSubject: Re: Dr Laurent Layani   Dr Laurent Layani EmptyTue 23 Aug 2011, 10:42 am

Hi All,

My name is Amber and I am 24 years old. The proudest mummy in the world to a beautiful little girl who is 17months and am super lucky to have a wonderfully supportive husband.

We live out in the middle of central Queensland and are travelling 10hours to the Gold Coast for me to be sleeved by Dr Layani. I go back on the 8th of September for my last preop appointment before surgery on October 3rd.

I am quite nervous about everything especially the hospital stay. I have never left my daughter for more than 3 hours (only with my mum or husband) so am extremely anxious about leaving her and how she will cope. Although i'm sure she will cope better than me. I already suffer from depression and anxiety so it is weighing on my mind alot.

I am having a really emotional day today (been crying on and off for hours) freaking out about the possiblity of not being around for my daughter. So I'm just wondering if anyone could give me any idea of the chance of leaks and further comlications with dr Layani. I have full faith in his abilities but am absolutly terrified.

I see some doctors are saying around 2% would that be about right. Also I've seen some drs put drains in all patients, does anyone know if Dr Layani does this.

And one last question I see alot of people spend their 1st night in high dependency - is this the norm for Dr Layanis patients.

Sorry to bombard with so many questions, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry I don't have an answer to your question, but give them a call. I think they have another info night coming up soon too - that's what I went to first before deciding to book in. It's a good opportunity to ask questions and suss it all out...

Dont forget if anyone is interested
we have our next information session on
Tuesday 5th April at 6pm
in our rooms John Flynn Hospital Tugun
We will have our surgeon, dietitian, psychologist and past patients there on the evening talking and answering any questions you may have.
This is a great informal way to research the sleeve procedure without making that one on one appointment.
And of course it's free.

Hi Mel.

Only just read your message. I was able to stay away from the loo for a whole 6 hours today - RECORD !!! Mind you, I didn't have anything other than apple juice (unsweetened of course) and water. I had to go to a friend's funeral today and didn't want to risk needing the loo. Luckily I survived it all......2 and a half hours in the sun, standing........at a beautiful small country church. Came home and had some soup. Didn't go to the loo straight after - so maybe things are finally settling. Had more soup tonight after doing the grocery shopping. Loo again...but will see what the morning brings. I made my son come with me to do the shopping - and encouraged him to pick out ready made dinners!!!

Hugs to you all

Oh sorry Kate, I should have known it would be Amanda, cheeky bugger.
Send me a PM about you, not far from the loo, that dosnt sound good. Dont be a hero let us know if you are not well. I expect a message today. If not I will call you. I want to make sure your ok.
And boys. Well what will we do with them. Maybe buy some of those nice prepared dinners you can get at the supermarket, some roast dinners and stir-fry and even pizza. That way all he has to do is put it in the microwave or oven.
Talk SOON

Hey MEL...it's Amanda that's doing the furniture stuff - not me. lol
I can't go too far from the loo still....so I'm not into heroics. My toughest part at the moment, is making sure my precious 15 year old son is eating properly. He can cook etc......but i have to make sure there is something here for him to use....then it's push push push to encourage him to do it. I know I can do it.....but it's part of making him take some responsibility......he's in grade 11 this year...
Love to all xxxx
