How do I know when Im Full Empty
PostSubject: Re: How do I know when Im Full   How do I know when Im Full EmptyWed 04 Mar 2015, 8:07 am

Hi Prettylady84,

Have you seen a dietician?

I was sleeved 2nd Feb.

I purchased the books

"Portion Perfection for Bariatrics. Seeing is Believing" by Amanda Clark,
"Your Complete Guide to Nutrition for Weight Loss Surgery 2nd ed." by Sally Johnston.  This is my favourite.
"Weight Loss Surgery Cookbook for Dummies" and
"The Complete Weight-Loss Surgery Guide & Diet Program Includes 150 Delicious and Nutritious Recipes".

These are all great books with recipes, nutritional breakdown and serve sizes.

I also purchased the bariatric bowl and plate.
I like the way the plate is divided up.

This is the schedule that I have been given by the dietitian pre-op:

Day 1 Post Op - Clear fluids, no more than 50 ml every 20-30 mins

Day 2 to Day 14 Post surgery:  Full Fluids
Not using a straw, the fluids must be liquid enough to pass through a straw.
Start with just a teaspoon
No more than 1/2 cup at a time.
Avoid carbonated beverages or allow to go flat.
Can have thin custards and yoghurt - low fat, smooth soups, low fat milk, milkshakes and smoothies,
Milky high protein nutritional supplements such as 'Optifast'

Weeks 3 and 4 Post Surgery:  Puree Diet
Mushy/puree consistency similar to baby's first foods
1/4 cup, no more than 1/2 cup.  This can increase over weeks 7 and 8  and no more than 1 cup
Include high quality protein sources at each meal and eat them first.
Can include protein-based meal replacements e.g. Optifast
Chew foods very well.
Separate meals from fluids.  Allow 20-30 minutes before and after meals to slowly sip fluids
Avoid eggs until week 5 to avoid potential discomfort.
foods can include:
Smooth low fat yoghurt/milk
Reduced fat ricotta/cotrtage cheese
Pureed fruit
Thin porridge/semolina
Mashed/pureed vegetable/lentils/legumes
Blended casseroles with meat, chicken, fish, legumes, vegetables, rice, pasta

I saw the dietitian again 2/52 post-op and then commenced special multivitamin supplements.

Time-wise, I have progressed from puree onto soft diet, but physically just having puree still and trying to get some protein shakes in.
It's a struggle to get enough in.  But I am not complaining!

Sometimes my stomach just feels, for want of a better word, 'tight' and that is when I might only have a couple of teaspoons of food, or no food.  And when it is 'tight' even drinking is difficult. Usually it has improved by the afternoon, so I get most of my intake in then and in the evening, but I would be now-where near the recommended levels of protein (not that the dietician set an amount).

The dietician explained  that the tightness is due to the muscles around the stomach being tight.

I have made another appt to see her the day I supposedly start solid food.

best of luck.

How do I know when Im Full Empty
PostSubject: Re: How do I know when Im Full   How do I know when Im Full EmptyWed 04 Mar 2015, 8:00 am

Yay, so glad the full factor has made itself know to you.  It's a learning curve...but you get to know your new tum a lot better as time goes by.

I went back to my blog and on purees I was having:

  • Baked Beans – pureed (even nicer with tomato sauce added)
  • Heinz Chili Beef – pureed (OMG yum), nice and thick too – and I get 4 meals from one can, lol
  • Heinz Chunky Beef and Vegetable – pureed, a little bland but better with some added cracked pepper
  • Taylors Spicy Vegetable and Red Lentil Soup – pureed (delicious)
  • Darikay Hearty Chicken Soup – pureed (really, really nice but this soup would probably be better for liquid phase as it’s very runny when blended-you wouldn’t even need to add broth to dilute)
  • Red Kidney Beans added to some of the above to increase protein amount
  • Chobani Yoghurts – my dietitian recommended this brand of yoghurt as it has a higher protein count than most other brands. She also recommended I get the plain or vanilla type as it has less sugar, then add my own pureed fruit in (strawberries or banana etc) as opposed to buying the fruit flavoured ones. I did this and added my own strawberries, and while it was very nice, I do prefer the already mixed fruit flavours
  • Fruche Yoghurts – so thick and filling, and the mango flavour is simply divine
  • Petit Miam Yoghurts – in squeeze packs, small, easy to ‘eat’, I tend to finish these quickly though
  • Fruit Puree Tubs and Squeeze Packs – handy packs and fruit is good for added fibre
  • Salmon and Ricotta blend pureed (probably the yummiest thing I’ve had in the past few weeks, it was like I’d died and gone to the stars)
  • Still to try this week: poached egg with avocado

So perhaps something there will tickle your fancy.

Cheers, DayleD

Hi so had my doc appointment and he is happy with everything. He has placed me on Purees and now I can say I know what full is. He said to me it can be the difference between one spoonful and I found that out. I now just have to work out how much I can eat. Does anyone have any ideas on what is good purees to have. Had chicken last night and it is very bland. Would like some ideas on what to eat

Sarah, did you mean to write CLEAR fluids or just fluids? It might be hard to get adequate nutrition in on just clear stuff, so if that is what you meant to say then I would double check that with your doctor in case that is a mis-communication.  I'm not saying it's wrong but just check in case maybe.

I have an appointment tomorrow at the doctors rooms so I will see what they say. Weighted myself this morning and I have lost 8kgs which I was over the moon about. Thanks DayleD and Shaniam its good to know that I will know what full is when I go onto purees. I will ask tomorrow. I would think that makes more sense having more than just clear fluids for 2 weeks but the paperwork I got prior to the surgery stated that I am on clear fluids for week 1-2, week 3-4 purees week 5-6 Soft food. I will clarify everything tomorrow and go from there

It was so helpful to read your post DayleD. That's how I'm feeling now. I'm yet to start my purée diet and I am finding I have no trouble drinking. Thanks for sharing your experience.

How do I know when Im Full Empty
PostSubject: Re: How do I know when Im Full   How do I know when Im Full EmptyMon 02 Mar 2015, 4:11 am

Hello,

Now I know everyone is different however thought I'd share my experience.  I was on strict guidelines from the surgeons' dietician and mine was fluids for the first 2 weeks (as most people are).  I was really, really frustrated as I was always hungry but never full!!  Not once in these 2 weeks was I full.  I kept persevering and stuck strictly to my guidelines (as in, I felt I could eat/drink way more than 1/2 cup of something but I never did).  HOWEVER, when I went onto purees it was a whole different ball game.  The full factor made itself known which, as you can imagine, I was very very pleased about!

I hope this happens for you too.

Cheers, DayleD

Hi Prettylady84,

I would recommend you contact your surgeon's office or dietician to clarify your post op diet. I was sleeved on 17/2 and only had to have clear fluids whilst in hospital. After that I've been on free fluids which is essentially anything without lumps that can be sucked through a straw (consistency wise). It's meant that for the past week and a half I've been having homemade soups, Chobani pouches, thin custard, protein shakes, juices, smoothies, milo and a range of other things which have increased my protein levels but also saved my sanity. I saw my dietician last Wednesday and she was happy w my diet choices. There may be a particular reason why you should be on clear fluids but I think that my diet plan is fairly typical of most people who have been sleeved - two weeks fluid, two weeks purée and two weeks soft foods. It would be very hard for you to be getting the protein you need in order to heal your new stomach from broth and water alone.

Hope this helps :)

No I don't think... If that makes sense. Are you having protein shakes as well? I have been living on Chicken soup and water (in small Doses) for almost 2 weeks and have been going out of my brain.

How Prettylady84,
I had my surgery on 25/02 and I know what you mean, out of all the times I had something to drink, only once while drinking a protein shake I thought I felt full. Maybe it'll take a while for the stomach to heal and send the proper signals to the brain? Just a thought...

Are you hungry?
