| I'm on Somac and when I had to have a colonoscopy post sleeve, I was told by the doctor that if I take it for the rest of my life it doesn't matter. He said that there is a small but real risk of cancer of the oesophagus if you have continual reflux, and the tablets are a better option.
So I try stopping every now and then and it hasn't worked so far.

| I agree it is a small price to pay.
My surgeon says 6 months, I actually take Losec, same thing different brand. He uses Somac, but it gave me that horrible metallic taste which is one of the side effects.
I tried stopping at 6 months, no go, and again at 12 months also no go, reflux back both times.
Now I am getting reflux in the afternoon sometimes, so told at my last check a week ago, to take 2 a day if needed.

| My surgeon gave me a script for Somac for 6 months - he said that before I bought the new script each month to try a few days without the tablets and see how I went.
well, it is ok for about 1 day, and then the reflux comes back with vengeance!
I too think I might be on them forever - but reckon its a small price to pay!
So I'm almost 6 months out, and still taking them!

| I tried to reduce it after 3 months and had a miserable time trying to get reflux back under control. My surgeon said definitely at least 6 months postop, possibly longterm. | |
