Thanks everyone for your well wishes. Got the spray today (Rhinocort Aqueous) hasn't worked yet but I guess it will take some time. (Not that I'm impatient or anything lol)

JayNay, what a wonderfully strange thing the human body is! I would have never thought that losing weight would disrupt your hearing!
I have a question, sorry it may seem abit silly of me but I have to wonder....
You wrote that when circumstances cause overall body fat to diminish, the tissue surrounding the Eustachian tube shrinks and this function is disrupted. . If this is the case, why dont all naturally skinny people have this disorder? I mean if this disorder is determined (maybe) by the surrounding tissue shrinking when people lose weight, what happens to all those skinny peoples tissue? Is it already small and wont shrink anymore? and if thats the case doesnt that mean that the function should then be disrupted??? If I have confused you with this question, dont worry, you cant possibly be more confused than me!

Sorry I'm a bit confused as well because the Doc said that it is a rare occurrence so not all people who loose weight get it? I guess Skinny people would have smaller tubes? All I know is that I seem to have all the symptoms. So I really really hope the spray works.

Hugs to all

Hi JayNay

I was given the steroid spray before my surgery to help unblock th nose and tubes before i had my sleep apnea test and they were fantastic. I was prescribed Avamys. Best thing for me is they didn't taste awful in the back of your throat like some other sprays.

Let us know how the spray works

Wow! That was informative! Amazing what the weird world of weight loss produces. Also amazing is how many functions fat actually does perform in the body, apart from generally getting in the way...

Hope the steroids work for you. They do for me, although I think allergies are the culprit with me (it's the same whether I'm fat or thin).

Best,

Weird Weight Loss Side Effects Empty
PostSubject: Re: Weird Weight Loss Side Effects   Weird Weight Loss Side Effects EmptyTue 04 May 2010, 11:21 am

Hi,

Went to see the Ear, Nose and Throat Doc today. I have Patulous Eustachian tubes (exactly what my GP said). He says it is from weight loss and I have three options to deal with it. 1. Do nothing and put up with it. 2. Steroid Spray twice Daily. 3. Grommets.

I can't do nothing cause it's driving me nuts so I'm going to try the spray for 6 weeks first. If it doesn't work I'll go for the grommets but he can't guarantee them either.

When I told him my surgeon laughed at me when I said what my GP had told me he was very surprised. He said while it is rare to occur it's a well know cause. It was first discovered in Cancer patients when they had rapid weight loss.

I Googled Patulous Eustachian Tube and one site said this:

Patulous Eustachian tube, also known as patent Eustachian tube, is the name of a rare physical disorder where the Eustachian tube, which is normally closed, instead stays intermittently open. When this occurs, the patient experiences autophony, the hearing of self-generated sounds. These sounds, such as one's own breathing, voice, and heartbeat, vibrate directly onto the ear drum and can create a "bucket on the head" effect. (THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I HEAR)

Symptoms

Patulous Eustachian tube sounds very similar to the standard congestion one gets from a cold or allergies, though there are subtle differences. The effect is often described as "drier"; with normal congestion, breathing and talking echo in the head with a muffled sound. With patulous Eustachian tube, all breaths echo on the eardrum without the muffled effect. Similarly, external noises such as the voices of other people are also not muffled. In addition, patulous Eustachian tube generally feels dry with no clogged feeling or sinus pressure.

Some patients with this condition are debilitated by the perceived volume of their voice, causing them to speak very quietly. Their own voice may also sound lower to other people, because with the trachea has more volume when the Eustachian tube is open. The patient may also sound as if they have congestion when speaking. Some sufferers may have difficulty in normal activities. Increased breathing rate, such as that brought on by physical activity, would cause more air to be pushed onto the eardrum more frequently, which can become quite loud and sometimes lead to a period of increased tinnitus after exertion.

Causes

Patulous Eustachian tube is a physical disorder. The exact causes may vary depending on the person. Weight loss is a commonly cited cause of the disorder due to the nature of the Eustachian tube itself. Fatty tissues hold the tube closed most of the time in healthy individuals. When circumstances cause overall body fat to diminish, the tissue surrounding the Eustachian tube shrinks and this function is disrupted. While this is seen in severe cases of anorexia nervosa, it may also happen with very small amounts of weight loss in individuals with no eating disorder.

So there you go. I will keep you updated as to if the spray work (God I hope So)

Hugs To All

It is always good to go and have any form of dizziness checked out with your doctor. tho the reality for most people who experence it upon standing after losing weight is.......... in the begining a drop in blood pressure do to weight loss, takes the body a little while to get use to it............. you move your ass at what I consider twice the speed of light now compaired to before when moving it out of the sitting position to the standing one hehehe........ You basicly get up a LOT faster and it takes you quiet a while to adjust to this and your blance etc can be effected.

I have MS and shocking balance problems and an ear thing that gives me terrible motion sickness. Both these where very much agrivated by the surgery itself, as in the general but that this becauce of the MS. Once that settled down and as weigth came off the balance issues started and I asked my nerologist about the getting up thing and what I said above was what he told me.

Interesting my ear problems as in blocked ears etc cleared up as I lost weight my GP said as you lose weight you sweat less in the ear and thus are less prone to ear infections and the build up of gunk. Think swimmers ear from the sweat. So hearing about people with ear problems after losing weight is rather interesting and a totaly different perspective.

Thanks for all your reply's.

I went to see my Surgeon who did my sleeve and he doesn't agree with my GP. He does think that there is something wrong with my ears but that it's not due to the weight loss. I have also been experiencing dizziness when I stand up sometimes and he thinks that could be related to my ears as well. I had assumed it was caused from not drinking enough.

I have made an appointment with the ear specialist for Tuesday arvo so I will let you know what he has to say. I just hope he can do something because it is driving me batty.

Hopefully over the next couple of days I will have time to do my 6month update in my diary, now I've seen Dr. Daoud. He was very impressed with my loss (now 68.5kg) but doesn't want me to go any lower.

Hugs to all

Allieswans, about ear wax. I am sure that you already know, but do not use ear buds to try and clear the wax, as that just pushes it in against the drum.

My right sinus is NOT talented, and neither is my right ear. I get eustacian tube inflammation that make the ear feel like there's cotton wool stuck in it. Steroid nasal spray (eg beconase, rhinocort) clears it, but you can't keep using those for too long or the skin in your sinuses becomes fragile and you get nose bleeds. Once you clear the inflammation with steroids, you can use sterile saline to keep things under control instead, but you have to work to maintain it.

Hi Alieswan, did the ENT specialist say anything?

I had a perforated eardrum from a doctor who tried to get the wax cleaned out. Lucky it had only just happened and was able to heal.

My issue is the excess of wax that builds in one ear which covers the drum making my hearing like a tunnel.

The ENT said the reason that happens is that I have very dry skin in my ear which is covering the wax. A normal working ear cleans the wax itself but in my case the ear can't work because of the skin over the wax.

This is why I don't think it's sleeve related.

Prior to surgery I have had the blocked ear that others described, my doctor said that is because the Eustachian tube is blocked. My sleep doctor prscibed these awesome steroid pump for the nose and it fixed it in no time. The pump thing was expensive ($54)

I've had the exact same ear problem, but I never connected the weight loss to it. Let us know the outcome of doctors appt, because I'd be interested to know if anything can be done about it.

Wow, I did not relate my ear problems to weight loss, but now it makes sense.

Have been reading everyones' posts but not been writing. Have been unwell of late (not sleeve related). Good news is is that I managed to get off my weight plateau. Dropped 3 kilos and now am under my surgeons set goal weight. I assumed my ear issues were to do with the illness I had, but am so glad I read this thread. JayNay please keep us up to date with your progress.

As for the nympho comments, I think it is not entirely untrue. I felt so crap about my body before, my relationship with my hubby was down the toilet as I hated myself. I feel so much more comfortable in my skin now, and generally, just happy. My relationship with hubby has improved out of sight and for the first time in a long time I actually want to have sex. Sorry about the tmi. Weird Weight Loss Side Effects 2329
