| Hi Jo, I didn't take vitamins, and I suffered massive hair loss. My hair was always thick, now I can feel my skull through it! But I don't care, at the end of the day my hair doesn't define me, no one noticed (they might when it starts to grow back) It was a pain in the neck when washing and brushing (and vaccuming!) but didn't bother me that much. | |

| Subject: How do you consume your Vitamins, and how may people suffer hair loss? Fri 12 Feb 2010, 5:30 am | |
| Hi all I am just wondering how people are taking their vitamins after surgery? I understand that I may not be able to swallow very well for a while afterwards, and I assume that Vitamin tablets would be fairly solid - so I'm wondering how??? (I feel like I'm missing them now as stopped taking them for a month before surgery) Would also like to know how many of you post-opers have suffered hair loss and how have you dealt with it. I love lots of protien foods, so I'm hoping that I will get around it - but would still like to be prepared for the worst. Cheers....Jo | |

| Its very common to have hair loss around 3-4months post surgery. I had the same problem, but thankfully mostly grown back now. so don't stress. I have been taking Blackmores Hair Nail and Skin vitamin now for 12 months. Seems to help. Like you i had lots of hair, but it is very fine. | |

| Wow, I'm glad I checked in today. I have noticed an extreme amount of hair loss in the last 3 weeks and am 4mths post op. I've had my surgeon check up last week and he's very very happy with progress and weight loss but I forgot to ask him if hair loss was related.
My bloods have improved which made me think it was not surgery related but maybe it is......
I have a lot of hair thankfully but am very worried as my hair is my pride and joy. I am on the vitamin cocktail as well but will watch to see if it improves.

| My dietitian recommended Suisse womens formula. 120 tablets for $34. I am also taking Ostelin (vitamin D + calcium ) iron + vitamin C tabs, fish oil, Co enzyme Q10 and a blackmores formula called hair, nails and skin. The last two I am taking as a result of a bit of research into supporting my skin as I lose weight...I am trying not to end up looking too much like a deflated balloon!!!! Remains to be seen if it works but I will say that my skin has a healthy glow to it and feels incredibly soft...also the zits I used to get at TTOM haven't occurred...coincidence?? | |

| I lost heaps of hair, its not noticeable to others, but I can feel my head through my hair, which I couldn't do before. I am now 9 months out, and it finally seems to have stopped. I have never done anything to prevent it. | |

| Thanks, yes I am in perth so may try price attack, I dont think I am too bad yet, I just find when I wash my hair it mainly falls out. I got some blackmores sustain on the weekend so I will try that for a few months and see how it goes, and if it gets worse then I will venture onto the other things.
Thanks very much for everyones suggestions and advice.

| hi
my hair fell out around the 3 month mark, im 6 months now, for the past two months i have been using a shampoo called nioxen it's very good and i have noticed my bald spot is getting better. you get it from the hair dressers or from price attack? is that the shop that has the hairdressers in with them? sorry i always get them mixed up with price line. or you can buy the stuff on strawberry.net
take care, i hope it starts growing back soon! i don't know if you are in perth but if you are the price attack place in carousel is good, the hairdresser was fantastic and gave me some good advice re the nioxin.
take care

| The very first appt. I had they told me to start taking biotin so we would not lose our hair. I actually think it was mentioned 3 or 4 times. The key is to start taking it 6 months before you are sleeved as it needs to build up over long time to "protect" your hair. It's not too late to start talking it later as your hair can recover, but if you don't start early you experience the shed.
The problem, and the reason a lot of women don't like to start 6 months before, is that they said it supports all hair growth. So if you have any little hair issues (like the mustache I have been sporting for the last couple of years) you'd rather not help along, it's too bad. The unwanted hair will grow as well as the wanted in the last couple of pre-sleeve months. I keep meaning to buy it and get started. I'll just have to keep an eye on the upper lip in case the growth really takes off.

Cheers Go Girl This works out to be $6 a week, and I now save a small fortune on food, so quite happy to pay this.

| I asked my surgeon about this at my last appointment as my bathroom floor used to have a hair carpet thing going on. He gets many sleevers reporting the same thing and he said that losing weight fast like we do puts the body under stress and a result of that is hairloss- perfectly normal it seems and will reduce to normal once the weightloss settles. He assured me I won't be bald and skinny. He got straight onto the phone to the dietician for what she thought I should do and she recommended doubling my multi vitamin. I am also on a hair skin nails supplement and my nails haven't been this good in years. I ended up getting my shoulder length hair cut short and it isn't as noticable now- in fact someone commented just yesterday how good my hair was looking. Just got to ride it... | |

Hi Go girl, I also read that post, but the poster was in the United States, and the vitamin product (Miller Pharamceutical's A/G Pro) seems only to be available in the US, and to be fairly hard to get there. I found this supplier online, but as I'm several months pre-op, I haven't tried importing (and I'm not sure you'll be able to get them into the country). http://allnutri.com/bid1558/miller+pharmacal+group.aspx There are a few specialist hair and nails formulations on the Aus market, but they mainly concentrate on silica etc which may not help, as I suspect (based on no medical knowledge at all), that with dieting it's not silica that's the problem, but the body's general panic reaction to reduced calorie and/or protein levels. Long term sleevers seem to say the body gets over it and starts putting energy into hair again when it realises literal starvation is not around the corner. Best, Dark

| my dietician and surgeon have me taking centrum 50+ once a day. i also by choice take blackmores vitamin b executive stress formula once a day, and caltrate with added zinc and magnesium once a day. all three can be bought at the chemist or supermarket and are really reasonably priced. i'm three months out from surgery and have been able to take all three from one week after from surgery. supradyn made me very nauseous, so it was great to be able to stomach these so quickly.

| taking tablets should not be a problem with a sleeve after the first week or two. I take handfules of them and have since day 7 after surgery. I just cut the super big monsters in half for the first few weeks and swollowed them bit by bit over the course of the day. applesauce | |

| My dietician put me on "band buddies" website is www.bandbuddies.com.au They're specifically designed by an Australian company for people who have had the band or sleeve, knowing that we can't take massive tablets and making sure we get all the right stuff... I'm only 6 weeks post-op and i have been panicking about losing my hair, but haven't yet!!
They're chewable multivitamins and i have to take 2 a day. They taste similar to what i remember vitamin C tablets used to taste.

I remember reading somewhere months ago about vitamins which people have recomended so please is there anyone out there with some suggestions.
Also does anyone know of a good multivitamin to take that is not toooo expensive. Was taking the supradyn but tastes pretty awefull and is hard for me to get down so am only taking it every few days and I am sure my body needs it more than that.
