I don't know why I didn't think of it before, but I am now having tuna morney, which is so full of protein with the tuna, milk, butter and cheese. And its yummy and you can puree it right down adding a little more milk if a thinner consistency is required.
And its economical.

Hi muffin,

I got quite addicted to a frozen roasted chicken product...found in Coles, where their bags of nuggets and wings are. It was roast chicken in small bite sized pieces, somewhat processed so a bit salt and waterlogged...BUT it blended beautifully. Not one string. I think it was similar to the chicken you get in a roast chicken roll...

I would nuke it, then blend it with avocado, LF cheese of choice, sometimes peas and corn and spring onion...then when I progressed onto solids I would nuke it and make a little warm chicken salad type of thing..

I could decant as little as I needed at that time so I wasnt wasting money...

I chose not to look at the additive label tho..

I think it was a steggles product, and about $8 a 400g bag.

I actually took the casing off the sausages partially cooked them and them use my "slap chopper" to well cut them to pieces and then returned them to the pan to finish cooking. I got the slap chopper online but I have seen it in a store, maybe Coles. Other than buying spices for variety I just found it easier to buy flavoured snags. I know sausages are on the fattier side but I could only eat half a one and once mixed with the yummy veggie purée all went down well.

I can totally relate to the fear of something being painful to eat, I've been there several times and ouch, ouch, ouch! Do you like pea & ham soup? That is lovely as well and Indian dhals - you can find prepared dhals in Coles and Wooliea and they go well with mince, sausage or chicken thighs. You can freeze portions you don't eat, they are higher in carbs but are okay occasionally. If something is a little difficult, leave it for a week or so and give it another go.

Hi Alikat,

I get the Max's WPI at the sports supplement shops, if you google it, it should come up with suppliers, I sometime order it on site, you can get a smaller version and big tub version, so mayber try the smaller bucket first to make sure you like it.

Tell me something, how do the sausages go down, are they a struggle, I am a bit of scardy cat, a little bit frightened it might hurt.

Soft moist chicken thigh now that sounds really yummmmmmyy. Oh and with the potatoe, pumpkin and carrot - a little dob of butter, salt and pepper makes it even yummier.

I could only eat 6 teaspoons of it but yemmy..

Okay, totally useless information but I pureed the same vegies - pumpkin, carrot and potatoe and it was heaven!

I find that thigh or leg meat is lovely and moist and I don't find it stringy. If you like salmon I found either fresh or tinned salmon smooth but I got the little expensive tins - John West Tempters (?). I also rediscovered cottage cheese, at the beginning I some CC with the salmon and even chicken with a little bit of chives. Mince and sausages were a blessing ... I pureed some vegies and used that as a "sauce" to mix with mince and it was yummy. I get some of the fancy sausages from Coles or Woolies for a change in flavour with either the vegee puree or baked beans.

Where do you get Max's WPI? I am also pretty fussy with taste and texture but I got myself one of those Magic Bullet blenders and it is so compact and quick to use and clean, so blending ice and such is a breeze.

Hi All,

Well I have read all the comments and they are all great, but just to touch on the taste thing and the mix thing of the WPI, I have tried tonnes of these drinks and I am very very fussy with texture and taste, and it is the only one that I have found that mixes like a milk shake and tastes like a milk shake. Granted I do it in a blender that also crushes ice and the taste sensation is unbelievable, and you cant even tell the shake was powder or even a protein shake, another way of mixing it up is with a banana or fruit just like Alikat suggested, Yummy!!!

Also I had my first post op appointment with my dietician today and she was very happy with the way I am getting my protein and asked which WPI I was using and I told her Max's WPI and she was very happy, so I figure if she is happy then it must be Ok and she said to continue having my protein shakes as that assured I was getting my protein in which she sees as extremely important.

The best news however , was that due to the fact that I am tolerating fluids so well she has now moved onto the mushy stage .................awesome so I can now introduce something more than soup....sssssoooooo over soup.

She has suggested mashed vege's, chicken in a can, tuna, crab meat and all of those are also very high in protein, but I must say I am a little scared to progress to the stringy meats yet.

So tonight I mashed some potatoe, pumpkin & carrot with a little milk & some mushroom gravy and it was the best food I have tasted in the last three weeks Protein Intake ... 542174

Has anybody got any ideas on how to make the chicken not so stringy and dry?

Regards

Muffincatt

yes you do have to watch your protien intake if you have kidney dease. You cant just suck down litres of protien drinks a day. You would have to have pre existing kidney dease for you not to use protien suplement if your diet is lacking protien.
I would like to stress we all here are talking suplementing protien ONLY as our intake is insufficent.
it would be pretty unrealistic to have been aproved for a sleeve with the work up before hand where kidney dease would not have been detected and you alerted. so if your surgeon didnt say you have kidney dease you should be fine. diabetics need to be checked every 6 months tho as kidney dease is one of the nasties that goes with being diabetic.

PostSubject: Re: Protein Intake ...   Protein Intake ... EmptyWed 03 Nov 2010, 9:38 am

I love a chocolate milk or iced coffee so it will be of help to me and heck, I don't want to do it forever - I like my food!

But after my experience with dinner just an hour or so a go, it is something I will do for the short term (just a couple of months or so) and when needed. Even though it has been three months since surgery I am still having difficulty with some food but not all of the time ... I have just spent the past hour waiting for the vomitting feel to pass. Goodness, I had lumps and bubbles threatening to make an appearance... I think it would have been less stressful if I had just been sick but my body just wouldn't do it.

So yeah, while my stomach is still healing and getting used to foods I will definitely have some replacement meals, shakes and so on as an alternative and I doubt the surgeon or dietitian would advise it if it wasn't safe but as I said, I do enjoy my food so this is in no way forever! Oh and I most definitely don't want to muscle up.

Thanks for all the interesting reading everyone.

PostSubject: Re: Protein Intake ...   Protein Intake ... EmptyWed 03 Nov 2010, 9:15 am

I haven't heard that about protein causing kidney damage, only the creatine. I'll have to find out about it, because as soon as I've had my sleeve and my hernia is fixed up (and I'm allowed back into the gym), I'll be back into the weights and extra protein.

Apple, it's not asthma the creatine is said to cause, it's symptoms that are similar. Here's some (probably crappy, typical internet) posts by everyday people re. that side effect:

http://www.nutritionalsupplements.com/heartrate.html

Obviously though, it doesn't happen to everyone, your son might be fine with it. I just wanted to put it out there because I think people need to be aware of those types of things if they can be before trying them.

I cant drink iced coffee or choc milk. it makes me sick as a dog. I can tho drink the coffee light.

I will ask about the asthma as I had planed to when he went to the doctors in the next few weeks. He actually has not needed ventolin or a preventor since he got this health kick. he is a protien junkie hydrates well and treats his body as this temple which only good food enters hehehe you should hear him bitch when we go out for junk ;)

I checked with my Chemist re using protein powders etc and was advised by him to try and avoid them, as long term use can effect your kidneys. Conflicting info as my doctor told me to try the tetra pack protein shakes! I guess the answer is to try and do it naturally most of the time and only have the occasional supplement. Looks like the more people you ask the more varied opinions you will get - bottom line do what you feel is right for you!

Your son sounds like he's done an excellent job too, Apple. I was right into my weights, and took creatine for a time. I had what I thought was an increase in my asthma, and my gp said that creatine can cause those symptoms. Stopped taking it, and it went away.
Best thing you could do is ask your GP about it, that's far, far more reliable than information from the net, but here's what I found:

- harmful effects on liver and kidneys in some people
- dehydration
- Gastrointestinal distress is the secondly most common side effect reported. Incidences of stomach cramps, nausea, flatulence, and diarrhea are more commonly reported during the loading phase when greater amounts of creatine are consumed each day (that one cut and pasted)

Like I said though, if you're building muscle mass, it can certainly help with that, and thus strength.

As far as creatine goes, most sleevers don't need it unless they're doing weight training/building muscle mass like Apple's son is, otherwise it'd be a waste of money.
It can also have side effects, so if you're interested in it, have a chat with your gp or have a hunt around on the net before taking it :)

seriously most protien shakes make optifast seem like the best dream milkshake in the world hehehe vile is a better description for most. but having said that most people will find a brand out there they can stomach. the warning tho is to purchase only the smallest amount of any one to try at a time.

wpi is the worst for mixing it is difficult to get a nice consistancy for most brands out there. wpc mixes better but has slightly less protien gram for gram.

my son is a full bottle on all the protien as he is into body building. he is very fussy on how things taste and insists all protien needs creatine added to be effective. He uses sports edge protien. you can get it in any supermarket. the flavour is chocooate. it mixes well in a shaker and is around $25 for 375grams.

now I am not saying you will like this brand but it is a reasonable price to try with creatine.

over a year he has transformed his body it is amazing.

I found the idea in "general chat" but thought I'd post here in "post-op" about getting your daily protien with protein shakes - thanks for the idea MC! Sheesh, I am so, so slow at times. I am, well I am embarrassed to say how long ago I had surgery not to think about the protein shakes before hand.

I have struggled since the beginning to get enough protein, I have tried time and time again with things like yogurt - all the suggested brands and styles and no luck, I just can't stomach them.

It has been difficult and I just don't know why I didn't think of the shakes before reading the post - one or even two a day ... it has to be way better than not getting what my body needed and still needs.

Blending Whey Protein Isolate with some ice and coffee sounds delish actually! My husband and I enjoy an iced coffee at the local cafe but I can whip one up at home. I guess people could add a little fruit if they wish as well instead of the coffee, I know my husband loves a mango smoothy ... berries, banana ... excellent idea!
