| Yes I agree that that journalism was sensationalism. Terrible. The lapband has helped a LOT of people, and if the sleeve was not an option bet all of us would have, / or did give it a go. I did. It nearly killed me, but so did the sleeve nearly kill me. For real. The woman in the room next to me died from gastric sleeve complications. Too sad. But we all know it is a possibility, that's why we are all so bloody scared going under the knife! All surgeries are a risk, but staying morbidly obese is guaranteed a shortened life of potentially ghastly problems. It seems to me that the thin population have little or no tolerance for overweight folks. They like to point out how we waste so much tax payers money with diabetes etc. etc....but when something like the lapband or the sleeve comes around, we are told we are cheats and doing things the 'easy' way.
Dammed if we do, and dammed if we don't !!

| Thanks for the link :). Amazing isn't it the things they leave out such as the using super to fund the operation, they don't say that this is available for any surgery. Lots of rubbish and omissions. Bad channel 7. Get my thumbs down. Linda | |

| I too saw this.......my first impression was that they were making out that the problem was the complications the gentleman had afterwards - fact is ANY surgery, including the sleeve has a RISK, even if like in this man's case, they perforated his bowel.
If they indeed had done their journalistic duties correctly, they would have said, this is what COULD happen however we encourage everyone to do the research into the op and the dr. I think in a round about way they were trying to say that but by cluttering it up with the Allergan statements it all got a bit misconstrued.

| If you missed this show, like I did, you can watch it by going to the Sunday web site and watch the video.

Definately trying to scare people about having the lapband, but having had 3 ops myself and about to have it removed soon, I for one don't think this is such a bad thing, I know it works for some, but from what i'm hearing there's more people having problems than not, and apparently only 1% of wls surgery is LB in America now, with sleeve being more popular.

| Like you guys I have a thing about the band too many horror stories. BUT what I don't approve of by Journalists is that they don't show an all round picture, they just pick one case. How on earth is the general public supposed to tell anything from that, all that stupid show did was show that weight loss surgery is a bad idea and the truth is that not all weight loss surgery is a bad idea. They never show the whole story and that just peeves me.
Sorry bad journalism is one of my pet hates. We are the lucky ones aren't we. We know what works and that is the main thing I just worry about all those thousands of people out there that will now not look at the sleeve because of that one program.

| Hi LisaB, I forgot to watch this...but I had a very similar experience with my band Dr making me feel like I was being perverse because I was not being banded 'according to the script'....too tight, lots of vomiting, horrendous reflux and a hernia...where was that steady healthy weight loss it promised? Huh....makes me mad when I think about all the money I wasted on it and here I am being sleeved now because all the weight, and more, came back on after I had it taken out...I don't recommend banding to anyone who asks me about it. Cheers, | |

| Well I just watched the biggest con job I have ever seen and to think that is the guy I let band me and then for six years he blamed me for the lap band not working he didnt even believe me when it slipped, he sent me home and later that nite I was rushed to emergency. I cant believe he is on TV saying it is safe and guaranteed to work when so many of his own patients have had so many problems with the band, in fact one of his own receptionists had the band in and it nearly killed her and she had to have it out and now she is bigger than ever but wont get any other wls as he has scared her especially about the sleeve... At least they did bring up how much money he is making off the band and how he is getting paid by the American manufacturers of the band. I think I will send channel 7 an email about what it is really like to be Prof O'Briens lap band patient!!!

| Well that was another crap one sided view, like what we have come to expect on Australian TV. Scare tatics, just as bad as the story about the sleeved woman. | |

| Hi Everyone, I just saw an interesting add for the TV show "Sunday Night".on channel 7..at 6.30pm.... It seems to be an expose on the lap band and the surgeon who did my lap band, Prof O'Brien seems to be the one in the hot seat, should be interesting viewing.....
