| You are safe to swallow tablets slowly dont try to take them all at once for awhile, the pains in your chest are likely i sign you are swallowing too much to quickly or you need to be in more of an upright position when you do swallow, i found if i was slumped over it caused gas pains.
All the best for your sleeve

| I agree listen to your doctor he is the one with the medical degree and vanderaj is right some tablets you can't crush as they are slow release. Double check with your surgeon when in doubt is the best rule of thumb to go by. The soreness in your chest may be gas pain but maybe get that checked just in case. You don't want to muck about with chest pains. Hope you have a smooth recovery.

| When he says to not worry, does he mean not take them, or not to crush them?
Extended release (XR) meds have a coating that if crushed will release the active ingredient pretty quickly. Depending on the med this can give you a buzz (pain meds) to a bad reaction or overdose, which is why the doc is probably saying don't crush.
I find I can take my little blood pressure tablet (Monoplus) easily as a whole tablet, even on day 1 post op. The trick was that it sat on my tummy on day one. 13 days post op, that's not an issue any more. This is my last med I'm on now.
I don't think I could have managed (even today) my Metformin 500 mg XR tablets. They're so big they make horses whinny when they see them. That said, my generic tablets do have a crease that indicates you can use a pill cutter to make them into two smaller pills.

| THanks everyone for your good wishes. I had the op yesterday morning and so far so good.
My dietitian said to crush all tablets for the next month, but the doctor says not to worry about it... Any thoughts on that anyone???
Also have been getting waves of pain/soreness across my chest every time I swallow. I noted in some posts that this has happened to others. How long did it go on for???
I managed to lose 10kgs on the optifast pre-op so was happy with that.

| Hi Vicki
Congratulations on having your sleeve date. I am 15 weeks post op and have people commenting to me about how hard it will be for me over Christmas but I just don't see it. It doesn't bother me as like you I am determined this will work for me. I think if you can wrap your head around all this half the battle is done. Good luck and look forward to hearing about your journey, please keep us all posted.

| Hi Vicki,
Congrats on your upcoming sleeve!
I'm a bit worried about the delights of the Christmas pudding during my recovery. I know that I'll be barely into the post-liquid stage by then, so I will miss the old favorites, but that's one of the reasons I'm getting this done, so I can enjoy many more Christmas's to come.
thanks, Andrew | |

| Hi Vicki Welcome to the site. Congrats on your sleeving date of 19th December. I am booked for the 15th December in Sydney. Please join us in the December sleevers in the sleevers monthly. You will be able to keep in touch with others in the same stage as yourself. How are you finding opti? I have been on it for nearly 3 weeks and finding it okay and not really hungry. Although the light headedness of the first week was not fun, made sure I was close to a chair as much as possible! hehe If you go to the surgeons thread you may find reports on your surgeon from other sleevers or click on the seach buttton above and type in the dr name. wishing you all the best. Hope to see a post in the december sleevers jessied | |

| My name is Vicki, 51, and from the Wide Bay area in Queensland. I'm booked to have a Sleeve Gastrectomy on 19th December 2011, with Dr Ian Martin in Brisbane. I've yoyo dieted all my life and have decided that I just don't have the energy any more to keep doing that. The idea of the liquid diet over Christmas doesn't worry me as I am determined to everything I need to do to ensure a complication free recovery. I started the pre-op Optifast diet at 117.2 kg and aiming for around 75kg, although 'ideal' weight is 65kg. I'd love to hear from anyone else who may have been 'sleeved' by Dr Ian Martin and to hear of your experiences. | |
