| Good on you Sapphire - I think that every one of us has decided on surgery, then backed of many times. Hope that this decision brings you peace in the long run.
My personal dietitian is anti surgery as they all believe that you can be fixed with diet alone and for many people this works. Give it your best shot and be happy.
We'll be here to help you along the way.
Cheers, Fi, xx. | |

Good luck with your journey Sapphire! I wish you every success :)
No need to worry ladies, calcium is absorbed in your small intestines. BUT it does need acid to do so. Since we now produce less acid (less food being digested = less acid produced) the best calcium supplement is Calcium citrate as it requires less acid. And also - if you are taking more than one tablet try to take one in the morning, one at night as your body can usually only absorb small amounts of calcium at a time :) And don't forget your vitamin D!

| I haven't heard of the "absorption" theory, but I'm taking Calcium supplements and will continue to do so. It's almost the only calcium I get these days and I'm blowed if I want to risk osteoperosis later in life. | |

| Good luck Sapphire and remember your parents are coming from a place of love...they want you to succeed. If you do eventually go down the Weight Loss Surgery road, just a word of wisdom from a veteran....Dont EVER let anyone talk you into a band...please! It may seem less radical, but you can almost guarantee further surgery if you get it. Thought I would add this in, just in case Ok, now thats off my chest....good luck with the opti :) Jiggly x | |

| Good luck with your decision Sapphire.
But I think what your dietician said about the calcium absorption is incorrect :) | |

| Hi everyone!! I visited the dietitian on Thursday and Mum once along came with me.The dietitian was overall very positive about the surgery, however she agreed that psychological work is worthwhile. Apparently a lot of sleevers aren't emotionally prepared for the journey etc. A concern she does have is that the part of the stomach removed, is the part that absorbs the calcium. She mentioned that even with supplements, there is quite a high risk of crumbling bones in the future After a lot of thinking and anguish, I have decided to go with my parents' wishes of giving them 6 months to work with me on my weight. When I told them - they both cried (Mum bawled) *sigh* The deadline is 6 months and we will see where I am at that point. If I haven't lost much weight or am just really struggling, the surgery will go ahead with their blessing - and they will even pay for it. Mum said "I think you are still salvageable" So tomorrow I'm starting on a 2 week stint of Optifast to kick start the weight loss. I have made my first appt to see a psychologist who specialises in eating disorders. I will follow a low calorie diet, and continue my early morning walks with Mum. My biggest fear is maintaining the weight loss. I will still be watching this forum and I thank you all for your responses to my questions. I look forward to watching your journeys :) Be in touch!! | |
