Remember you have STAPLES Empty
PostSubject: Re: Remember you have STAPLES   Remember you have STAPLES EmptyTue 31 Aug 2010, 2:29 am

This thread got the better of me so I emailed my nurse and asked to clarify.
So I don't get in trouble for copying and pasting her email, the idea of it is... The staples are Titanium. This is because they don’t cause a foreign response in the body.
The only bit I WILL quote is this:
She said: "I rang the rep today and he said that they shouldn’t show up on the MRI. "

Has anyone else asked their surgeon/nurse?

I have asked mine and he said it is no problem with MRI as my staples are made of Titan and does not react badly with magnets. I don't know if everyones staples are titan, so I guess it is worth checking.

My husband has about 4 stents in his heart, and no he does not go off at the airport.

They are very small staples, not like the ones you get from Officeworks!!!

Good reminder, Gail!
And the airport question was one I actually asked before the op - and no, I haven't set them off either, so the doc was right!

OMG, I can't believe how clueless I am sometimes ... I had a friend ask me just today if I had staples inside, and I casually said that I thought they disolved. D'oh!! Good to know for future reference!

Wow... I've been into hospital 3 times since my sleeve op, and just realised I've lied on my admission forms each time! Luckily I was in the capable hands of Dr Martin who obviously knows all about them, but I'll be more careful next time. Thanks Gail :-)

Remember you have STAPLES Empty
PostSubject: Remember you have STAPLES   Remember you have STAPLES EmptySat 28 Aug 2010, 10:00 am

Hi all,
Just wanted to let you know that just before the surgery I have just had the anesthesiologist asked me if I had any internal devises.
Nope I said, believing that it was true. So she asked about a band and we talked about what I had had done.

It is really really important that we remember that we have STAPLES inside us.
When we are asked the question Do you have any prosthetic, the staples are classified as prosthetics. They can do very bad things to some machines if the staff are not aware that we have them. I didn't give them a second thought, but apparently it is very very very important that we remember and tell them when asked.

That's all folks !!
