PostSubject: Going from band to bypass   Going from band to bypass - Page 2 EmptySat 19 May 2012, 9:30 am

First topic message reminder :

I had a lapband nealry two years ago. I have only lost 10kg im very unhappy with my band. I eat nearly the same amount as before the band. Went and saw another surgeon to get a second opinion. He suggested in taking the band out and doing a bypass. I asked about a sleeve but he wont do one after having a band. He said there is too much scar tissue and the chance of getting a leak is 10% which is high. Not sure what to think about a bypass dont really know too much about it. Doing research at the moment. If anyone has some advice of anything at all to say about having a bypass Im all ears. Thanks for your help.

Hi Ros, I don't know what Qld hospitals provide, but in Vic most of the private hospitals have access to the Internet for patients, so taking your laptop might provide you with some welcome distraction. If you are going into a Ramsay Health hospital they charge a compulsory fee of $25 for a daily newspaper, Internet and Foxtel, so you might as well use any service you are paying for!!!! Once again, all the best for Monday.....I will also be sleeping for most of Monday as I am having a Pre-Op Gastroscopy, so I look forward to catching up on your news on the other side of your surgery.
Best Wishes

Hi Glenmaree,

Go ahead and vent...this is the place to do it...LOL..

I love the names people have given to optifast....ha. I just love it.

Tony Ferguson has a fruitbox style of shakes. Very similar to optifast and they actually taste ok. I am replacing some meals now so it does hit me like a brick when I have to start for my op. It comes in a few flavours and you can keep it on or out of the fridge. It is very convenient.

Keep in touch when you can as your posts really help and motivate me.

Hi Kity

I can swallow the food but it sometimes causes pain, gas and discomfort. I don't vomit but do get the slimmies. I have learnt to stop eating at the first sign of discomfort otherwise I pay for it for hours later. Pre the bypass I had similar issues but also had chronic reflux. I am still a little concerned that the opening to the stomach too narrow but as the Doctor said it is a fine line between too narrow or wide enough to allow for weight gain. At this stage I still want the weight loss - just feel that if I can eat unrestricted then everything that I have been through for the last 12 months is a total waste plus there is the expense. I guess I am alo a little impatient - feel like my life ha been on hold for 12 months - now I just want to get on with it. Not sure I answeedd your question but thanks for giving me the opportunity to vent.

Glenmaree

Glad you are starting to feel better. Can I ask what do you mean when you say it doesn't go down. Is it like the band when you can pop it back up??? lol sounds great hey?

Hi Vicki

The move went well - but I did too much so was pretty sore and exhausted for a few days. Food wise I am progressing but it is so very slow. Have managed scrambled egg, le rice, cruskits with tuna spread. I tried mash and mince but no go so will try again in a few days. I pureed the mince/ash mix fr lunch today and managed to get it down. I would be lovely to meet you so I hope you can make the next meeting - details in the sleevers get togethers.

Hi Glenys, how are you after you move? I was thinking of you Friday & Saturday & hoping you were ok. Ive had 27 moves during 38 years of marriage so I certainly know what its all about....!!! Personally I don't mind moving, great time to get rid of clutter that we all accumulate.. Anyway how are you doing ? & are you able to get more down? I also hope you are taking it easy.

I have just been talking to my friend Rosa from Auckland, she is the taller one in our photo.. Rosa has her Sleeve done on November 5th.. She has been away on their small family farm north of Auckland while her daughter was on holiday so she had many hours to think about what she was about to do !!! Rosa said that even though everyone says the same thing, am I doing the right thing, she said she nows it is the right thing to do. Rosa was just saying that this as such a great sightfor support & getting information

Take care Glenys & hopefully I will meet up at the monthly meeting... :))) Vicki.

Hi Ladies

I think both your surgeons are wise to suggest a bypass because of the risk of complications with a sleeve given your past histories. I have just had a bypass done and feel great - check my diary if you are interested. The bypass is reversible in most cases unlike the sleeve which is not. I lost 40kg with a mafunctioning sleeve and had a similar experience food wise as a band that was not functioning. Post bypass I have lost another 6kg plus and feel good - still not on solids - puree/mashed but getting there

Hi Vicki I bounced back really well form having my band removed. Could of not been happier. That would be really good if we had our surgerys around the same time. My hubby is on Holidays from the 7th-20th Jan so I hoping I can have op in that time. Im glad im not getting it done before xmas. I am looking forward to having a xmas that I can eat at. Have not been able to eat much with the band. Not that Im going to pig out. lol.

Sorry to hear you had trouble having your band removed. Hope you doing ok now.

Cheers Sharon

Hi Sharon

How are you, after having your band removed Sharon ???? My Band was adhered to my stomach so he had to repair that & remove part of my bowel as well.. After having no pain when I had it put in, I certainly didn't expect this..

I had my apt with surgeon on friday & have my date for ByPass on 17th January 2013... & I don't need to go back to see my surgeon until 16th Jan, the day before surgery... & I can do an Online thin for the dietitian !!! I like that part.

It would be great Sharon if we were to have our surgery about the same time in Jan, we could share notes.. Take care Vicki
