Hehe it's funny, i started my 2 weeks Opti-Fast diet today, I picked out a vanilla shake for this morning. Having my first shake was kind of ceremonial, the first real step in the process. So with great ceremony I downed the shake.
Oh My Gawd! What in the name of the dieting gods were nestle thinking when they made these things? It was disgusting! I mean where is the vanilla? Where was the mmmm yummy vanilla taste i was expecting? I have had shakes before and have always been partial to a good vanilla thick shake, so in the past i have always opted for the vanilla diet shakes as i found them not to bad. But this thing had almost no flavour what so ever. I thought people might have been exaggerating a little, but no, I see now they weren’t.
Kate Morgan vanilla shake on a scale of 1 - 10 i give a 6 Celebrity Slim standard vanilla shake on a scale of 1 - 10 i give a 7 Celebrity Slim mens vanilla shake on a scale of 1 - 10 i give a 9 Tony ferguson vanilla shake on a scale of 1 - 10 i give a 7 Opti Fast vanilla shake on a scale of 1 - 10 i give a 1
There is just nearly no vanilla taste to it. The folks at Opti-fast must really hate overweight people. Guess i will add a couple of drops of vanilla essence to the shake.
I will try the chocolate one for lunch, gods knows how bad that will be!

Not surprising though as I'm not eating bugger all (bowl of steamed veg at night) plus the 3 Optifast Sachets, I guess the body has got only one choice hey, tap in and burn the stored fuel. Good Luck with everything Rick, I'm sure it will be a great success, and yes the Vanilla ones are fine (Haven't tried anything else) and I guess you can ad flavourings if needed but to be honest its 200ml so just drink it I say! Look farward to hearing how you are going.

| again, can't help myself going where I'm not allowed, I'm just contrary! Anyway, my dietitian said I can have black coffee and also am allowed equal. So, I add the two shots of espresso (chilled in the fridge) to my choc optifast, with 1.5 to 2 equal sachets and a bit of benefibre and 2 ice cubes with cold water and shake very well. Not nearly as traumatic as the plain choc opti plus you get your caffeine. I only have strawberry opti for lunch. the berry bar for dinner, usually in the car cos I'm starving after work.
A beef oxo cube in a mug of hot water is a great afternoon "snack", more satisfying than plain water.

| I tried Achieve-it and they are way worse than Opti. I am concentrating on using up my Achieve-it pre-op as I can still down them quickly. The thought of sipping them post -op is gross. I think I will give the soups a chance. | |

| oh yes opti was horrible yech
and i never want to touch black coffee ever again LOL
i used to chop my berry opti or choc opti bars up into slices and freeze them and then have soup and salad for dinner with the bar as a dessert
or i would warm up my chocolate opti and have it as a hot chocolate
it is a suckful time but totally worth it
good luck!
if you want to read my diary it tells you all about my trials with opti LOL

| Hi, I am with you and think the vanilla was bland so I add a shot of expresso coffee. I was told 1 or 2 coffee was ok | |

| I have found the vanilla horrible also and the chocolate only slightly better. Strawberry is not something I normally like but I could stomach it. My favourite so far is the coffee flavour. Also the coffee and strawberry are the only ones to have fiber in them. Choc n vanilla you might have constipation lol I have bought the choc berry bars but haven't had one yet...will try that tomorrow. I am not getting to many as I feel it would be a waste of money to buy a six pack and find after one that they are horrible. Wish they had a mixed pack for the bars, puddings and soups :( I also cant understand the no coffee but can have tea. Us poor coffee drinkers suffer :( Luckily I only really have one a day so I am going to try and get my dietitian to allow one. Wish me luck LOL

| Hi Bezza, I found the shakes to be aweful also when I got my banding done. You really should try the bars instead they are much better and easier to take to work and stuff and all of them aren't too bad. What ever you do do not try the soups though OMG they are awefull. | |

| Your a wealth of information James, thanks mate. I will stop taking my fish oil capsules, i didn't think to mention them to the dietician.
Oh, btw i just had a small nibble on the corner of one of the cappaccino bars just to see if they were going to be any good. They are delicious, i had to make my self wrap it up and put it away as ive had my ration tonight already.
Cheers

| HI Bezza, yep I completely understand your wanting to stay inline with what the doctor has asked you to do. Just a thought if you were having trouble with the taste of optifast they do the same thing. I swapped them around daily on my pre op diet and my Surgeon said my liver was nice and small when he did the operation.
you headaches I think by the sound of what your saying are from caffine withdrawals. My doc never said to stay off them so I didnt. The only thing I had to give up were omega 3 fish oil capsules as they thin the blood, which is not good for the operation, so I stopped them a week before the op.
If your still having headaches ring your doctor and ask if you can had coffee in small moderation with no milk. If you have milk it will stop the ketosis process which the preop diet uses to work. If you need milk, replace with a small amount of Cream, BUT NOT LOW FAT CREAM as they are loaded with sugar. Normal cream as the fats in that are natural. I have tested this in the past when on the Atkins diet and used Ketosis sticks from teh chemist, once I was in Ketosis I tried putting cream into my coffee and it didnt make a difference, however the next day I put some milk in and it effected the ketosis somewhat.
I hope this helps.
James.]

So is that what causes the headaches? cause everytime Ive tried these shakes I still have coffee (black or white) and I still get the dreaded headaches. I thought it was the lack of carbs??? To be honest i am not sure if it's the nature of the vlc-diet or the absence of caffine. My information package from my dietician says to avoid caffine drinks (cola etc..) and coffee and alcahol. Through oddly it says i can have black tea (yuk) but i thought tea had the same amount of caffine as coffee. So i am somwhat confused on that. But i am doing as i am told even if i dont understand it. Hey James thanks for the Dr Tims info, i am a little reluctant to dabble with replacing optifast with anything else at this point. Only because it's the pre-op diet and well i just don't want to deviate from the plan as laid out by my specialists. It's only for another eleven days anyway, after which i will be sleeved and willing to shop around for products i like. So anyway, day three and my headaches are only minor, i did feel a little light headed once or twice this afternoon and my concentration comes and goes. But then that might have just been because it was Friday afternoon, and we know what they are like. hehe. Now Smurfy, i went and bought some of the opti-fast coffie shakes today, i saw them in a chemist near work and just had to snap them up so i can try them. On the box is says the shakes have coffee extract (4%) yet it makes no mention of caffine. I also bought some of the cappaccino bars and on the box it says they contain coffee, yet no mention of caffine. As far as I am concerened they are on the opti-fast menu, that means i can have them Anyway, the weekend lies ahead, will be interesting to see how i go. I did manage to resist temptation at a rather well laid out morning tea at work today, but oooooo mmmy gawd those chocolate coated snow balls and iced cup cakes looked soo good. I could smell the sugar i swear i could. Cheers Bezza

| Hi there are also more varieties of meal replacement shakes with the DR Tim shakes called Success, Through a doctor they are Dr Mcleods. The doctor who desigend this diet, did it with a university. it is very good and I think better than optifast as there is more variety. The Tony Furguson diet is a spinn off from Dr Tim Orchard. Try these if you dont like the optifast flavours, as they have the same results at the optifast, by putting your body into ketosis.
Here is the web link for them just copy and paste into your web browser. http://www.drtims.com.au/ you will find a store locator or you can I think order online. This diet was at one stage only accessed by a trained DR. Very good but like other diets, once you go off it, as you know we put the weight back on, if not careful.
I still like having their deserts etc. The soup ones like chicken, I like to have with real peices of BBQ chicken and vegie peices. This way its a chunky soup and pre sleeve would make two meals. I suppose now it will make 4 LOL

I haven't tried the coffee ones yet, so i am unsure, but i would hazard a guess they use coffee flavouring or somthing like that. Bezza

| Well it's two days down 12 to go! Hehehe. I have found the choc shakes slightly more palitable, which really says how bad the vanilla ones are. I dont mind the chicken soup, a pinch if curry powder makes it quite nice. Today i have had the headaches, not too bad but enough to be distracting. I guess thats the caffine withdrawal starting.
My two cups of salad and the soup filled me up tonight, but i was in a hurry to get home from work to have dinner, i was very hungry this afternoon. I have been managing the 2 litres of liquids much easier than i expected. Diet jelly is a godsend!
So it is tough, but managable. So far.
Cheers

| None of them are great and everyone prefers a different flavour... for me choc was the only one i could stomach... for my hubby (who just tried them) he preferred the coffee ones... Good luck in your search for one you find palatable enough to consume for 2 weeks. | |
