Hollywood Private Hospital - Perth Empty
PostSubject: Hollywood Private Hospital - Perth   Hollywood Private Hospital - Perth EmptyWed 12 Oct 2011, 12:27 pm

Heya,

I just had my band out at Hollywood Private Hospital, Nedlands. I have stayed in a lot of hospitals for lots of different procedures and I would have to say that Hollywood is one of the nicest. The rooms are small, but all the staff encountered were very friendly and attentive. Good at what they do :)

Facilities were very good, through a total bitch that all the temporary cafes (they are doing a refurb) close by 4pm. Staff on ward are happy to make you cuppas at any time, thank god.

Food? one of, if not the best menus of all the hospitals I have stayed at. Service times are good as well. There were hot options for breakfast (omlettes and such) and it was hot!

Looking forward to going back there for my sleeve :)

I second everything Cathode said! Had my band out at Hollywood in September, couldn't fault the service, staff nor food!

Pity their delicious menus wont be high on the list of my pastimes at my next stay there when sleeved :)

LOL. I know! My next stay is for a sleeve, so I will probably be thinking of the non clear fluids menu longingly.

Hollywood Private Hospital - Perth Empty
PostSubject: Re: Hollywood Private Hospital - Perth   Hollywood Private Hospital - Perth EmptyWed 26 Oct 2011, 5:24 am

Not much written here on Hollywood Hospital; so have uploaded an extract from my diary recollections... I hope it assists some newbies.

Operation Day:
Elected to be a very bit early instead of a very bit late; on arrival at the hospital was shocked to see I was interviewed straight away [expected to wait a whiel as I was more than an hour early]; had to do some signing of admissions things and paid for my PH excess and a $25 package deal at Hollywood Hospital for all TV, Foxtel and Internet connection. (I did comment, on how do we bring in laptops etc, when we are told to leave all valuables including money, phones and laptops at home). I was then ushered to the lounge area to watch TV, read a magazine and a paper, until they were ready; was tagged and ready for shipment through the system; [by very pleasant staff, I must say] I didn't wait too long maybe 20 minutes and I was greeted by another yet friendly and pleasant nurse whom took me through to the pre-op waiting area; my bed until the surgeons were ready for me in theatre. All the pre-op stuff was done here; (take a book to read if you need to); getting changed into my sleepeeze pretties; must say best disposable knickers I have ever seen or worn; and wait ... wait... wait.... Being first off the ranks for the afternoon; I was told when I am taken through to the theatre waiting area; my luggage would be taken to my room [I did have a lock on my suitcase for security]. Pre-medications taken a while ago; on the way down the freezing cold theatre corridors had a couple of jokes with the staff; was placed into a waiting stall. JA came and saw me to see if all was okay and what was happening; very soon afterwards I was wheeled into the operating room; even colder; the Sleep doctor was already busy getting me ready for my dreaming....... Amazing I do not remember waking up in recovery, where in all my other ops I have; first memory is waking up on the ward with a couple of nurses hovering over me. I was told my OH had phoned. I wasn't in any pain; just very sleepy; was on water only for twenty-four hours; except for the constant obs I slept most of the night.

Day 2:
Couldn't focus on reading or watching TV today; just snoozed on and off all day; with sip, sip, sip of water as still on water only. DR said after the fix-up of insides everything went great and smoothly. I will talk to him more at my first post-op appointment; though I felt fine except for a little (and very slight) pain under my left rib; assumption gas. The drips were still in my left wrist and was having twice daily tummy injections; plus all other injections went into the drip (precaution only for nausea and reflux tabs, plus others as needed). I got up today and had a wash, had a stroll around the room and generally was on the move on my own.

Day 3:
Had a as good as you can get sleep the night before being constant obs etc; was wide awake and very little if any pain. DR said the drain could come out today and didn't even feel it; nurse with the magic hands I say; I have had this done before, and it is like a tugging pulling though doesn't really hurt; this was non existent and the tummy needle, didn't even know it was done. I have had to swollow a reflux tablet every day; which is the only one I am allowed to; no problems either. Being unchained from the drip machine also gave me freedom ... I washed my hair and had a long shower, great, even got to wet my tummy and pat pat dry .. things change so much over the years.. passed you would have to keep dry for two weeks. All going great I can depart on Friday; if I keep my food down. Diabetic Jelly and Apple Juice for morning tea; I managed not much of either though perservered to lunch; where more apple juice, Beef Broth and Diabetic Jelly. Dinner I had a high protien drink; Chicken Broth and Icecream; of all didn't eat a lot of anything; though sip sip sip all day or so I thought. Had a lovely talk on not drinking/eating enough and I thought I was doing oh so well.. and how doing my best. Still no pain, not on any pain meds except for panadol as a precaution. Still have the niggling gas pain, but very mimimal. Was a little shocked no warning .. just before bed, had my first number two. Went walking around the corridoors a fair bit today.

Departure Day:
DR came in very early and said I could leave; on discharge; one nurse said she would escort me out of the hospital; another on the way a country girl said she would take me the rest of the way to the taxi; the treatment by all staff was amazing and the care given was exceptional.

I have had my fair share of admissions to hospitals and also worked in a few. Hollywood Hospital to me was like a holiday away from home [if you exlude the operation]; the service; the people is like being in a friendly country town; in an upmarket motel.

I got sleeved at Hollywood Hospital 29-05-12 & I found that the staff, nurses, facilities etc were all top notch.

Upon check in I was so nervous but the nurses all made me feel comfortable & did their best to try & keep my mind off the surgery.

After the surgery the nurses took great care of me. I had one incident throughout the night where I pressed for assistance (was busting for a wee) but was hooked up to my drain & IV/drugs and the night shift nurse kept me waiting 40mins & was quite rude. But I can't judge the hospital based on one person who wasnt the most helpful!

Didn't really get food coz I was just on apple juice & water - did get a broth which was nice!

Thank you everyone who has talked about Hollywood Hospital. I'm being sleeved by JA there on 8 Aug 2012, start my Optifast tomorrow. I'd heard Hollywood was good but it's very reassuring to read it from those who've been there done that.

I'm feeling just a tad nervous but I'm looking forward to fitting into those lovely clothes I kept just for when I'd lost my weight.

I was sleeved on 20/6 by Dr Watson and I recommend both him, his anaesthetist and Hollywood Private Hospital.  All the staff are friendly and nothing is too much trouble.  The rooms are nicer than what I thought a hospital room would be and I had foxtel and internet access whilst there.

My experience with Hollywood Hospital wasn't the best.
Not the hospital itself so much, mostly inconsistent nursing care with the nurses. None of them were on the same page and I had to keep reminding them what stage I was at ( after they tried to give me water and pills before I had the swallow test).
Two nurses couldn't put a catheter in, third nurse had no problems.

I used to be a nurse ..... While these nurses were all pleasant,, they really didn't have their finger on the pulse with me ( no pun intended) and for that reason, I will not go back there.

Pleased that the majority of you had a good experience at Hollywood.
I've only had day surgery there last year, so can't really comment.

For the incisional hernia repair I wanted to go to Hollywood, as I was so overwhelmingly unimpressed with Murdoch when I had my sleeve done there back early Feb, but the surgeon wanted to do it at Murdoch.

Needless to say, I was even more overwhelmingly unimpressed with nursing care when I had the repair done at Murdoch, followed by 2 readmissions via Emergency there.  So much lack of communication, so little quality nursing care.
The GP was horrified by what had happened, and knew that I didn't want to go back to Murdoch, but although I could have gone elsewhere e.g. to Armadale, being practical it was best to go back under the care of the surgeon (who had only discharged me 2 days earlier)  and with my now Volume 2 of 2 case notes there.

I wish that I had documented stuff as it happened, as now with my ME/CFS cognitive dysfunction and shocking short term memory, the minutiae have eluded me. If I can't as a patient and acting as a patient advocate for those who can't write a letter of complaint, then who is? I am kicking myself.
Being discharged not once but twice with a paralytic ileus and small bowel obstruction...that's not stupidity, or even negligence, it's straight out dangerous.
