PostSubject: Re: should i do it??? help needed   should i do it??? help needed EmptyTue 24 May 2011, 4:35 am

Hi Cecile,

I was sleeved at a BMI of 33. My doctor original did a lapband on me, which I hated and had removed after 6 months. Although I was only 105kg and 176cm tall when I was sleeved I knew (as did my surgeon) that it would only take me a matter of time before I was back to my pre-banding weight of 122kg.

My doctor was Craig Taylor - I couldn't reccomend him more highly.

The sleeve has been my saviour too. I never have to worry about it, it's such an easy way to live life and maintain my weight loss. I really hope your surgeon can see this is the best thing for you.

Hi,

After reading and reading and convincing my husband I have decided to get rid of this pathetic band, i have NO TIME for ADJUSTMENTS with 2 young children...I rang my surgen and said I want to get rid of the band and have the sleeve, he explained its a 3 month wait which i am happy to do but now he is saying that my BMI is not high enough for the sleeve, I tried to explain that I was much heavier before the band and that without it my weight would escalate...I have also had a hip replacement and desperatly need to lose more weight...does anyone know a surgen who will do the sleeve for someone with a BMI of 31?

Desperate

Kylieo

I had similar remarks made to me by some of my family and friends, but I went ahead and was sleeved anyway in April2011.

I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER!!! and guess what...... those doubters are now onboard and praising the weightloss and health benefits.

People are scared of the unknown and do not understand it is a tool to help you live a happier, healthier lifestyle.

I have lost 18.5kg since being sleeved, I can eat everything I have always enjoyed (although a lot slower and much smaller portions), but I now find it much easier to moderate myself and focus on eating a more balance diet.

Hope all goes well.

Hi Kylieo,

I totally understand how you feel about worrying what other people will think about your WLS.

For that reason I choose to keep my surgery totally and completely private - my immediate family knew (Mum, Dad, siblings, hubby) and I'm very, very, very glad I choose to do it in this way.

But....if other people do know about your situation and want to make comments......then stuff them. Truly stuff them.

If ever there is an expediated degree in 'quit caring what others think' it is going through WLS. If people haven't walked in the shoes of being obese then they don't get a vote. If they have walked in those shoes they STILL don't get a vote but they should certainly be supportive. The bravery of WLS should be admired not ridiculed.

My family were wildly supportive of my choice of having the lapband and then sleeve - they just wanted to see me well and happy and knew WLS was an answer. The lapband was horrid and I only lasted 6 months with it, the sleeve was done on me 10 months ago and I couldn't be happier with it and am only a few kilos away from my goal weight.

Continuing to gain weight and shorten your life is just not an option to even be considered. In an insane situation (of truly eating yourself to an early grave) this is the sanest choice.

I am wishing you all the best, take care and huge hugs to you,

some background.
I had a lap band done about 7 yrs ago after 4 yrs of no after care and being told it was me, i seeked 2nd opinon and found out my band had slipped and i was using my osoagus(sorry about spelling) as a stomach, so what i did was got that band removed and got new one put in by a good surgeon this time with lots of aftercare and help but never aless this 2nd band after 3yrs did not work as i am to much emotional eater and worked out ways to work around the band, and had problems when band was tightened used to make me vomitt. so this band has now been taken out and so up is going the weight. My surgeon has talked about getting a gastic sleeve, as this is harder to cheat and no matter what happens can not eat very much. My question is should i do this or will it be a waste of time and money and not something i can just fix back if does not work. thank you for any help im really at my witts end and worried if i dont do something soon will just keep getting bigger and not be around for my kids or husband.

Hi Kylie,

Your story sounds a lot like mine: I also had a lapband, which slipped and had to be removed (in 2000). I lost 27 kg in the 8 months I had the band, but was constantly vomiting and towards the end felt really sick, couldn't even keep water down.

After I had it removed my weight fluctuated a lot until I got to my highest weight ever last year and faced my reality: if I didn't do something more permanent (and drastic) to stop gaining weight, I would start having serious weight related problems - as it gets more and more difficult to lose weight each day.

I heard about the sleeve in November and in December saw the surgeon. I knew that I too was an emotional eater, so I saw my GP and did a lot of research online to find a psychologist who specialised in eating disorders. There are a few around, ask your GP or The Butterfly Foundation (online/phone), as it is essential that you get some help with the mind side of things. As others have said, there are ways to cheat the sleeve, especially if you are not prepared for when you feel emotionally unwell.

I'm not 5 1/2 weeks post op and couldn't be happier! It's not easy, first facing the fears of major surgery, then going through Optifast, then surgery itself, pain, recovery... But in the end it's worth it. I've lost almost 15 kg so far and the best part is that I KNOW that I will be within a normal weight range soon, it's just a matter of time.

I hope this helps. All the best,

Adriana

Just like gottarhyme said, it IS the best thing you could do for yourself. I was banded in 2005 and by 2010 I weighed considerably more than when I had the band put in.

I used to be tactful to people about the band, but it really is a crude ineffective weight loss 'tool'. The sleeve is everything the band isn't,

you will still need to follow the golden rules:
1. Protein first
2. No drinking with meals
3. No snacking
4. Exercise

But you will not have that awful food stuck in the plug hole feeling, no vomiting, you can eat absolutely anything...even bread, yes I said bread!! Not that you will want to though, you will fill up too quickly on it.

If you never get that full sensation when you eat, the sleeve will open up a new world to you. You will actually feel satisfied after you have eaten a small amount.

Having said all of this, you do need to research your surgeon very carefully. There is a thread on this board about Surgeon, its a good idea to check it out. Weight loss is never plain sailing but the sleeve gives you back some control over your life, we all have plateaus and set backs but its so easy to get back on track again.

Good luck with your decision.

Jiggly x

It is the best decision you will make, but the sleeve is a tool that will work well only if you are positive it will.

I am 19 days out, and I feel fantastic and in control. I eat, but a little bit fills me.

Apparently, there are ways to 'cheat' on the sleeve too. Liquids and chocolate go down well, and people who are really determined can work at eating the wrong things. But those people are in the definite minority.

The sleeve makes your tummy so small, that you physically cannot stuff yourself silly. I feel full after two cruskits with cheese. That is dinner! And it feels like I have eaten a whole Christmas dinner!

I have lost 14KG over the last month (6KG before the sleeve, and the rest over 19 days) It works. I feel great. I am glad I did not get the band, as I want to live a normal life, eating less, but enjoying my food.
