Hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's)

I have had an underactive thyroid for 15years. Take 200mg of oroxine daily. I had the sleeve in September 2009. Haven't looked back. Absolutely love it and it has been reasonably easy.

I am having a few issues with medication now as 200 is too much 100 not enough so we are now trying 150. I am putting that down to my weighloss that I can reduce the amount. I had been taking 200 for years and it has only just in the last 6 months been too much.

I was sleeved 21/10/10 i lost 6kg with optifast pre surgery and as of today 4/11 i have lost total of 10.6kg i have
an underactive thyroid and i take 75mg thyroxine daily
i was very sceptical whether the sleeve would work for me but i am very happy with my results, i don't know whether it is a slow loss or normal but any loss to me is a good loss LOL before the op not matter what i did i couldn't lose weight i would lose like 2-3kg then the loss would stop if i can lose at a steady rate and it stays off it will be a dream come true.

My weight loss was 6.4kgs on optifast before surgery and 4.5kgs since so, so far I have lost 10.9kgs since this all got rolling.
I think the sleeve is a better choice as I had the band for 5 years, and although I did initially lose weight it all came back on again later down the track. I was/am also a comfort eater so I quickly learn't how to cheat the band, I won't be able to with the sleeve.
As I said it was my specialist that suggested it, so I thank him heaps.

Hi Natty,
Thanks so much for the reply. I've seen several endocrinologists so far - haven't had such a good run with my specialists. It was actually recommended that I try lap banding however the surgeon doesn't believe that would work for me and was the one to recommend the sleeve.

Congratulations on your weight loss so far!
it's encouraging to see that it is possible - your weight loss before surgery was that from optifast or something else?

I think you may have misunderstood me, I wasn't saying the weight was a result of the medication, just that the medication isn't working.

The surgeon has said he'd like to do sleeving not banding.

I dont think you put on weight from the medications you take, it's that they make you hungry(??). If you have the sleeve your stomach is reduced by about 3/4 so you cant physically eat as much as you used to. Did the Sleeve surgeon tell you he wouldn't do it?

That's pretty much it in a nutshell...

from what I gather there's a chance it wouldn't be as effective because I'd still suffer from the additional underlying cause. ie) I'd still have an under active thyroid.
I've been for an initial consultation for the sleeve, I guess I was just hoping there was someone on here who had similar problems.

Why did it say that it wasn't a good idea for thyroid patients, I haven't heard that before? I would assume it means that you should try and sort out medical issues and try to manage weight non-invasively before progressing to the surgical solution. That only makes sense. Sounds like you've had a good attempt at managing it though.

Just curious if anyone here who has been sleeved has a under active thyroid. After 5 years of my TSH , T3 and T4 levels bouncing around like a tennis ball and my weight continue to increase - this has taken over all areas of my life, I barely recognise the person I've become.

I'm strongly considering being sleeved, however a lot of information that I've come across has said that the sleeve isn't a good idea for patients who have thyroid issues until that is dealt with.
Has anyone here had a similar issue with their thyroid and had success with weight loss through the sleeve?
