PM,

I tested my wee, and I am only just tinged pink, hardly in ketosis (full on ketosis is dark pruple) but have lost 2 kilos in 4 days, so don't stress, the more you are in ketosis does not mean you will loose more weight, we are all different and as long as you are following the program, loosing weight, don't try so hard or worry about the ketosis. As I said, I am nowhere near 'full on ketosis' but still have little hunger, headaches though, but my breath is good. (I asked hubby!!!)

Your head will be much more of a battle than your body (head hunger, missing food etc)

Relax, and just try and get through it, if you stick to the Optifast it will all be good!!

Hi all,

Ketosis is a state of your body in starvation mode. It is really only to be done while under the close supervison of a medical specialist. It can have long term consequences. It is not the natural state to be in. It places and enormous strain on your kidneys (this is why you have to drink 2 litres so you don't get stones!)which can cause all sorts of problems, you can get very bad haliotosis (bad breath) becuase you are NOT in a healthy state.

Over the last few years, Ketosis has been thrown around like the latest fashion fad, it really is not a great place to be. You are depriving your body of fuel. Short term for the Op, it's a good for weight loss, but why after going through WLS to be slim and healthy would anyone aspire to get themselves into ketosis for a lenghty time.

And now people buy the multistix from the chemsit and strive for 'dark puprle' as if it's a badge of honour.

Sorry guys if I sound hard, I am a nurse, and when i was training years ago, if we tested someones urine and they had ketones, we would tell the Dr as it was an indiaction that their was an inbalance in thier bodya nd it was a medical condition that needed addressing.

My advice, slow down, eat well, and loose weight slowy. The last thing I want to do is end with bad breath, dry skin, or worse kidney problems!

PostSubject: Re: ketosis (fat burning)   ketosis (fat burning) EmptyWed 04 Aug 2010, 9:54 am

For me the best thing with ketosis is that I loose weight very fast. I am 3 months after the sleeve and I still try to keep myself in ketosis to ensure a steady weight loss. I have lost 25 kg already.

It takes me 3-5 days to get into ketosis. I have to keep carbs lower then 15-20 grams per day to get there, and can go a bit higher when I am maintaining.

My symptoms of ketosis is initial headache, fatigue, dry mouth, acetonic breath, feeling warm in my body and being unable to exercise very hard. The headache goes away.

When you body burns fat it will produce ketones as a rest product giving you ketosis. You can measure the amount of ketones by buying ketostix at the pharmacy and test your urine when you pee. The color on the stix will tell you the advancement of your ketosis.

Good luck

HI Nat,

Ketosis is a wonderful feeling (well for me anyways!) You have heaps of energy, are actually in a good mood, you may have a metallic taste in your mouth and you also may have bad breath.

It would take me about 2-3 days to get into it, and that is with NO cheating at all. I know the first few days are really hard, but it is so worth it!

Hi guys,

Im wondering if people can tell me what ketosis feels like?

How long did it take you to get into it?

Will I know when Im there? Im worrying I wont go into it and will have a fatty liver and it will be horrible and the surgeon wont do it!

Chewing gum, sugarfree mints and all those sorts of things are perfectly acceptable and if you're on Opti I reckon they are essential pre surgery as well (cos man can that Opti coat your tongue!).

I took a bag of Double D sugar free lollies to hospy and only had about 6 all up, and on the day I was freed from my dancing partner I went for a wander to the pharmacy and bought a tin of mints. They've lasted me till now, and came in handy.

Sorry to drag this topic to the top again but I didn't want to start another for basically a stupid question.

I was wondering if you have bad breath while in hospital, post op, between brushing your teeth (obviously won't be eating food that will cause bad breath however...) is it ok to eat breath mints or chew gum? Will our tiny tummys stand this?

Hi,
Just read the report and have to tell you that you are gonna cost me money today LOL
I have a health food store right next door so am going in there to get some things and then after work will go and buy the strips.

That was such an interesting report, thanks, I loved reading it.

Hugs Gail

Hi Kari,
This did put my body into ketosis, as I (being a nurse with access to test strips) tested my urine every now & then. This ketosis is what helps takes the hunger away and makes the body use up some of its fat stores (somedays the hunger is gone- some days its not but is not the raging beast it was) and this usually happens around day 4 of the diet.
Cheers Jen

You can get the ketos stix from the chemist over the counter, I found this great site that clearly explains how there used to show when you are in ketosis (burning fat) There actually promoting applepoly, which is a whole other story....

I'm using them at the moment as a guide to see if my body is burning fat.

I'm hoping this will bring this post forward again, as I am having the same problem. I have ketostix and know that I am well and truly in ketosis, but have been here before and my foul breath just hangs on for weeks. Some people only suffer for a few days, but mine just keeps on keeping on. I think I keep the fresh-mint companies in business! I have had my teeth checked and also my GP ran some tests a while back to make sure it wasn't gut related. Nope...just smelly old me reacting to my diet!.
If anyone has ideas on how to minimise ot treat it...bring 'em on.

It might pay to get some ketostix (I'm not sure how) and check.

Otherwise, have your teeth checked, if your bank balance will stand it. A dodgy tooth can cause a pong.

But when I was young and daft (still daft, just older), I put myself on a 600 cal diet (including very limited carbs) for an extended period. Apparently my breath smelt like the Black Hole of Calcultta the entire time... so if it's not ketosis, it may be another side-effect of low calorie diets.

Best,

Dark

You will probably find you are in ketosis with such low calories in the first few weeks after surgery.

PostSubject: Bad breath since op   ketosis (fat burning) EmptyThu 28 Jan 2010, 10:48 am

Been sleeved for 3 months now and everything is great, feeling/looking good. Except...
I apparently have had bad breath since the op. It may or may not be related, but the timing is pretty odd, I've never had this issue before.
Has anyone else had this? Does anyone have any suggestions? It's pretty embarassing.
