| I think the physical side of it is only one thing. Think of the confidence she has now that she would otherwise not have had - and potentially less nasty comments and bullying that could have scarred her for life.
I think it is drastic surgery, but the parents would have been very well informed, and I believe this girl will now have much happier teenage years and adulthood.
It really does prove that portion control is the way to lose weight, doesn't it!

| I have to say I don't agree with drastic surgeries at young ages ie brest implants etc that should wait until a body is grown to its full potential. However, in such medical cases where there is a gednuine 'medical' problem surgery should be look at as an option.
It isn't like I mentioned before a vainity procedure but a health based one. I knew someone who had growth issues, a young man a grew up with whose 'growth' hormones didn't work properly, if doctors hadn't intervened then he would have had health issues as he grew older. He is now a healthy man who was able to work in the defence forces, something he wouldn't have been able to do.
As doctors now know that there are genuine medical cases where people can't lose weight or keep a healthy weight by following the standard of eating well, exercise etc. If it is needed why not. I don't think I would want it earlier than 12/13 though.

| I have to say I'm not sure I agree with surgery for 12 year olds. They aren't really able to give informed consent, to understand the risks and changes. The parents must have consented for her. I also wonder about the nutrition requirements for a growing body and how these can be met following a sleeve. It's not all about being thin. Thin and healthy are not the same thing. | |

| I can see how that's controversial.. But after watching the video, this girl looks like she's gotten the help she needed and is living her life as a normal, healthy girl.
If I'd known at 12 the weight issues I had then would continue to plague me and I'd eventually have this surgery, then I wish I had done it at that age too.
Young enough that it's still easy to modify your life and eating habits, and young enough to bounce back skin & body wise.
And young enough, to live a normal teen then adult life.
Good on her. | |

| Wow thanks for sharing this - it really hits home....
Yes it would be a very controversial topic however.....only those that have been through the weight battle from early on would know and understand what this lovely girl went through. All I can think of is how wonderful someone helped her NOT miss out on all the things that are rightfully hers that she so deserved.
Makes me all warm and fuzzy - once I dried the tears too !!

| Wow, beautiful - thankyou for sharing! Because I needed a girly cry in my lunch break!! lol
The thought of a 12 year old having the surgery seems a bit scarey but I think of how my own life would have been completely different if given the opportunity way back then!
So glad she got help so early on.

| Oh wow... this made me bawl my eyes out! ( I am such a sooky!)
Can totally sympathise.. I weighed 100kg when I was 12 and no amount of trips to the doctor could help me. Mum started taking me to the docs about my weight when I was 8 and they put me on 1/2 a sudafed (psudo) tab each morning before school to curb my appetite. Didn't work. Then it was calorie counting.. didn't work. I won't go into the reasons why it didn't work as this would take up an entire page and is the reason why I struggled to lose weight the rest of my life.
By the time I was in year 10 I weighed 120kg's. I think about the childhood I missed, the dates I never went on, the boys I never kissed, the clothes I never got to wear instead I was the "chubby" "funny" girl that was every-ones "friend". I missed out on so many things. No-one could help and I felt there was no solution so I tried and tried for another 15 years to lose weight ( I am 31 now) and this is my only solution. If only I could have done this when I was 12.

| Me too. I remember crying and writing in my diary at 12 saying : I am 12 yrs old and 12 stone. I am so unhappy. etc. I have so much compassion for that young girl. Me and her. She is so lucky she got the help she needed. | |
