| Agreed - if you weigh up the pros & cons - doing nothing you're (probably) going to end up with heart disease, knee & hip problems which then affect your quality of life. so better to do this while you are younger & fitter to cope with the procedure & then none of the above hopefully will occur. I work for a very conservative GP & if she says its the way to go you can bet its safe - thats what I did, didn't really give it a lot of thought - just did it!!! i was prev banded though - like the sleeve much better, much more user friendly & not so socially debilitating. | |

| I think we all have an "OMG!!!" moment, if we are honest.
Mine came as they inserted the canula...then I woke up fine.
You know: 100% of the horror stories recited to me were from people who had heard it from someone else - not one was first-hand.
All operations carry a risk - even going to the dentist - but an even greater risk in my case was NOT to do something about my escalating weight.
The sleeve is the best thing I have ever done.

| Hiya, Its been awhile since I have been on here so I am catching up with everything going on.... and was reading your blog belladingo and am sorry that you have heard one of the horror stories, but they are out there and do happen. Today is my 2 month sleevaversary... :-) and I have to say pre op the good and bad thoughts battled in my head but mainly I let the good win as I am doing something to give me better quality of life, a healthier life etc. Alot of people don't know I have had sleeve surgery I am still not advertising it... I am sure the people I work with assume but have not asked or said anything. Sorry went on a bit of a tangent.... as I was say I have been sleeved 2 months ago and it has been great... I only ever had 2 days of what the hell did I do, and that was when I woke up after the surgery. Reason being was I was fine before I went under the knife earlier and now I am in pain... what the hell... but from then each and every moment got better and I am going great guns. I must admit I have been very fortunate and have done it by the book. I have heard other stories and people have had leaks, been sick etc and I feel for them, but as everyone is different you just don't know. I wish everyone the same I had as it was a breeze compared to some, and please bare in mind the surgery / pain etc fades with time if all goes well such as I did. As I said I feel for the ones who had issues and wish future sleevers my sort of recovery as it seems to be a distant memory but not a horror memory.

| With any surgery there are risks and we are all aware of that in advance and I chose to weigh up that risk against the risk of me dropping dead from complications of being over weight. there are members on here who have had complications (which you can read about in complications with the sleeve) but the majority have breezed through. I personally think the sleeve has saved my life and thats not an exageration. If youve got a repuatable surgeon and you follow his and the dietitions instruction prior to sugery and have researched the sleeve then your as prepared as you can be. i was worried about the risk before surgery but knew i was only getting bigger and bigger and it was my last resort and the descion to have surgery was not taken lightly. And i havent looked back since (all 41kgs and counting!!) shelly | |

| Hi Bella,
I think it's only natural to go through the whole range of emotions before your surgery - I know I went from being totally excited, to totally terrified within the space of weeks. Even as I was lying on the bed about to go in to surgery I had one last thought of "OMG what am I doing?" but my surgeon was brilliant and had a very calming chat before I went in.
I am now two and a half weeks post sleeve and I have had a dream run. I only felt nauseous twice in hospital after the surgery, and since I've been home everything has been going to plan like clockwork. I've been a little dehydrated but apart from that I've been fine.
Don't let the scary stories turn you off. If you truly believe that the surgery is going to be the best thing for you, then please go ahead with it. I have also read and heard a few horror stories about the operation, but honestly there are more good outcomes than bad. Complications such as leaks are rare - just research your surgeon and if you can, talk to other people who have been to the same surgeon.
My surgeon - Dr Roy Brancatisano from Circle of Care in Sydney - is absolutely brilliant.
Best of luck, and don't let the horror stories turn you away from something that can improve your life 100%!

| Hello Belladingo,
All I can comment is on my experience. I was only sleeved 3 weeks ago. I researched as much as I could and I research as much as I could about my sergeon. I came to the conculsion that I had faith in him. If I did not I would have gone to someone I did have faith in.
At the end of the day if I did not do something I think it would be a matter of time before I ended up in hospital because of a heart attack or a stroke. I don't like to think about how long it would take to recover from a stroke.
Yes I was worried about a leak, but I was more worried about doing nothing to improve my health.

| everyone, Well my op is slowly coming up on September 21st and I've been really excited about it, maybe a tad nervous but more excited and positive than the omg and what ifs and negatives until recent. I was talking to a friend the other day who didnt know I was getting the sleeve and she said oh have you heard about so and so who had their sleeve. I know the person she meant but no longer friends with and then when she went to tell me they nearly died and are now in ICU and had a leak etc I am so scared. Okay so firstly this was not with the same surgeon, not even in the same state but still it started to make me think the omg's I am really hoping there is somenoe out there to make me feel better and tell me its more rare than common for complications. Thanks in advance Sleeveys | |
