Charcot's Foot Empty
PostSubject: Re: Charcot's Foot   Charcot's Foot EmptyThu 03 Feb 2011, 10:41 am

Long term prognosis is that the foot will heal. It has some minor deformity (one of the major aspects of the condition) although mine is fortunately very mild. I do not have any ulceration (which again, is a usual part of the condition).

It's just a very long road to recovery. Will probably end up with orthotics and custom made shoes. Mainly to protect the foot from any future relapse.

What a terrible thing to have TC. I would also be interested in the long-term prognosis. Do they think it will sort itself out?

At least you still have your foot - I guess that is a good thing!!!

Hi TC
So sorry to hear about your problems. I know what you mean about not taking control of your diabetes - so hard to do when you have major food issues, as I know from experience too.
Okay, so it might be a long time until you get the cast off - but what do they say about long term? Will it be fixed at the end of this?
Good luck...
Chris

Charcot's Foot Empty
PostSubject: Charcot's Foot   Charcot's Foot EmptyWed 02 Feb 2011, 6:13 pm

I am a Type 2 Diabetic and in January 2010 was diagnosed with a condition called Charcot's Foot.

http://www.epodiatry.com/charcot-foot.htm

This meant that I was put into a plaster cast on 28 January 2010. I have been it ever since. It get changed every 1-2 weeks and to say it has been frustrating is an understatement.

Yesterday I had my regular fortnightly visit to the Orthopaedic Specialist and Podiatrist. While we all thought that it was improving to the point of being healed, the symptoms have slipped backwards.

I have now been informed that ot looks like I will be in the cast or a CROW (Special boot) for the next 2 years!!! This was not the news I was expecting and to be honest has really disappointed me. I have an 18 month old son and I was really looking forward to the fact that my weight loss and my foot healing would allow me to be a lot more active part of his life. Now that is going to be limited for at least another 12-24 months

While the medical experts keep telling me tht there is nothing I could have done to prevent this, I do feel somewhat responsible because I never took control of my diabetes properly over the last 12 years and basically had very bad control.

Please, if you have Diabetes. Look after yourself. I would never wish the complications (especially this condition) on anyone.
