| My surgeon said it was my call but suggested I have a 'trial at home' because some are affected more than others. I was one of the lucky ones who had no complications or hassles. I was off pain meds by day 2 and drinking 2L water by day 4. I had a couple of glasses of wine after work between week 2 & 3 post op with no issues. I then had another night out at week 5 and as I said below I drank wine and a couple of Bourbon & diet coke with no issue. I would suggest you see how you feel and don't force it. If it feels ok then it probably is apart from the obvious which is more drinks equals more calories. Definitively can't eat and drink at the same time so beware and take it easy. Since then I went out for dinner and made the mistake of having a couple of glasses of wine and trying to eat a entree meal of beef braised cheeks and more wine. Stomach said No and had a quick trip to the toilet to relieve pressure with an up chuck. Not a good way to go or use as a planned option but once I threw up I felt fine. Not that I would plan to use it as a way of dealing with over eating but don't be too alarmed about throwing up in the early stages, its just seems to be a reflex to relieve the pressure with none of the usual 'being ill or feeling crappy' after effects. I now have a better handle on meal portion size and selection and know when to stop instead of trying to finish off the plate (retraining the from old habits is the hardest thing). If I go out for dinner I take it easy, make sure I space things out and pick a lighter small meal then wait for a while before drinking anymore. I am 12 weeks post op and 22kgs down and feeling great. I had initially planned to lose at least another 12 kgs but now aiming for another 20 kg after realizing that I can do it without the old fears of how hard diets (all 350 of them) used to be. I am not dropping as fast as others I read about here which worried me at first but my plan is to try to get into a steady life style routine and know what and how much I can eat day to day rather than my old way of crash diet starving, lose heaps, then get sick of it and binge and stack it back on. I enjoy a nice wine and a good meal so my plan is not to go without but just moderate it and if I have a night out I trade it off with a bit more exercise and make sure I go straight back on the healthy routine the next day not the old next .....week/month/year routine. My advice it take it slow, see how you feel and do it in stages. The one thing I have picked up from this forum is everyone is different and different things work for different people. Good luck, bottom line is that being sleeved was the best decision I have made and I am sure with a bit of trial and error you won't regret it as long as you remember you still have to work on losing weight and it will not be a magic cure but it most definitively helps make it a hell of a lot easier. Here endith the lesson - good luck!! | |

| Reading some of the post I think it is very much an individual thing but for me its basically no change. I am 5 weeks post sleeve op and have been out twice in the last fortnight. I didn't try beer but drank a lot of wine and a few bourbon & diet coke and didn't notice any increase in the rate of being affected. Only thing that has changed is I can not eat at all while I am drinking but that doesn't matter if its water or booze, same impact. | |

| I am currently deciding on weather to get the gastric sleeve. I got a lapband back in 2008 however it hasn't worked properly and my surgeon is suggesting the sleeve.
I am 24 so a lot of what I do with 'the boys' involves alcohol, it's now only around once a month (as we slowly grow up) I go for a night out on the town, however what I wan't to know is roughly what percentage of your pre surgery intake can you now handle, particularly the guys? One of the advantages I see is if I can half my spend on booze its a big tick. However I don't want to become a 'two pot screamer'. It's not a 'real factor' however it's something I really want to know.
I am happy to sacrifice booze for a while whilst I loose weight, however this is a life long thing (kinda freaks me out), so I am thinking more down the track once I have got to my target weight.
Also how does it effect your BAC? as I often now will have 2 or 3 and be right to drive.

| I had my first serious drinking event "Engagement Party" a few weeks back.. And ended up having about 8 pots and 2-3 ciders. This was all spaced out over about 6-7 hours but i seemed to handle it quiet well. I definitely felt it allot quicker than usual but i also noted as others have too that i sobered up allot quicker.

I rarely drank alcohol when losing weight, unless it was for a special occasion. Now I am at goal, I enjoy my wine again, but only of a weekend. You are a wise woman, Janette!

| I took a Duromine the other day to help with the head hunger and get my body kick started. however like some people say they can get drunk quicker with the sleeve, I found that my medication (duromine) worked faster and I wal wide awake much longer with out sleep. In saying this check with your doctor about your medications. There may need to be some tweaking there. James. | |

| Hmmm, where I used to be able to drink a bottle of wine & still be able to walk in a straight line, I'm now pickled after two glasses. We had a big night out on the weekend & I managed to only spend $45 on drinks. It makes for a quick, cheap & drunk night. But it could an early night for me because of how drunk I got so quickly. Will definitelt pace myself more carefully the next time, including the all important & responsible glass of water between wines. Have a fabby Easter everyone |

| Hey all Apart from Janette who seems to still be able to drink without stripping in front of the boss, it seems that it's a general reaction to the surgery I guess the advantage is I guess you can splurge and really enjoy a good quality wine - seems to be the same as everything - can't have too much of anything so make sure the stuff you do eat/drink is damn good - wine, chocolate, fresh veggies, good quality fish etc Thanks for your feedback guys | |

| Yep, I'm like Andrea - I am now an exceedingly cheap drunk. Alcohol really hits a lot faster and harder than it used to, and I've really got to watch it! | |

I think having a glass of wine in the safety of your home first to test drive the new stomach is the best idea - saves getting slammed at a work function and making a move on the boss or doing a strip tease on the reception desk! I am going to a work function on the weekend. My brother and father have told me that I am prohibited to drink :P They know how quickly it affects me!!

| Hi Octavian and welcome,
Here is a link to a thread in the Post-op section: Alcohol after the sleeve including a link to a study that says yes, it does affect us more and for longer.
Cheers - Carrie :-)
PS. Sorry for posting in the "Blokes" section, but I thought the info was important, :-)

| Hi All I am about 4 months post op and for the first time since Ive opened a bottle of Johnnie Walker and wow did it really hit me hard!. I didnt drink much at all prior, but i could easily get through a glass or three before I felt it, but now im super sensitive to the stuff. Light headed or dizzy halfway through a scotch on the rocks is beyond a joke. Has anyone else experienced this? I hope its just a matter of building up a tolerance to it again. please tell me this is temporary | |
