Hey, b-mouse, reading some of the diaries (or parts of them) is really helpful - you'll find some that you really identify with, or others that are really inspirational and you just enjoy reading, and I know I just found many of them very helpful, being real accounts of actual people experiencing some of the things you're going through/thinking/worried about/dealing with.

My surgeon was Ahmad Aly. He operates at Mitcham , Warringal and I think another northern suburbs hospital. He's also Head of Upper GI Surgery at The Austin.  He is no more lenient on lower BMI patients, but if he thinks your conditions/ symptoms/ blood work results and family history align with the benefits of this surgery, he will definitely consider you. All the best :-)

thanks for the recommendation. he sounds like a great doctor!

I didn't go to Mitcham, sezz, but I had all of my babies there :-) I'm pretty much a secret sleever , & I know too many people at that hospital !!! greenfrog also had Mr Aly, about 2 years ago, not sure which hospital she went to . I know he has an excellent reputation & is highly respected among other medical people. Worked for me !!! :-)

i'm 157cm at was 95kgs at my heaviest with a bmi if 37. portion size was always a massive issue - i just never felt full. i have been on every diet imaginable (lol, shakes too now!) and no matter how much i lost, i always gained it back plus some. i never got below 78 kgs (and i was only there for 2 days, before jumping back to above 80kg again). i had the surgery in hope that it would take me to a weight below anything i have managed to get too on my own. i can't honestly imagine myself ever weighing 65kgs but if i can make it to 70kg and stay there i will be more than happy! even 75kg will be a happy place. i have never had any health issues so fingers crossed my op didn't give me any!

i just keep telling myself that i am always going to have to watch what i eat - but now i won't be overweight when i do it.  i'm only 4 weeks post op and have lost 11kgs so far - so even if i only lose another 10 it will change my life consideraby :) good luck with everything :)

Hi benevolent mouse, and thank you for the well wishes   :)

Yes, thyroid does make life more difficult.
As I keep losing weight, I've gone back to hyper-thyroid, so not sleeping again, high blood pressure, headaches etc.
I am having my Thyroxine doses adjusted, but it takes weeks for the lesser dose to work ...

Yes, putting on 41 kg made me a recluse .... and nothing fit me anymore, had to get huge bras and stretchy XL clothes that I wore the same outfits constantly ....

Good luck with your journey, good luck with the PHI, and hope the 12 months will go really fast for you!

Cheers,

Margo

Hi!!!

so many similarities!
I also work in health care and recently seeing photos of toes ulcers and wounds on diabetic patients that really made me think hard about having sleeve done and reverse insulin resistance together with 40 kg that I gained in last 10 years since coming to Australia.

I am booked for September in Brisbane!

My weight also comes from eating too much of good stuff, no softdrinks, take aways or much alcohol. Just too much nice food that I always cook myself and not enough exercise!

When are you thinking of having it done?

hey agus, we are so similar indeed. i also gained about 10 kgs since coming to australia. the portions here are huge. i am the same with cooking at home and eating a lot of it. i almost wish i had a junk food habit so i can completely cut it out and be done with it! it's much harder to eat a lot smaller portions of home cooked food that is supposed to be really good for you.

I am thinking of getting surgery this time next year, since I have to wait out 12 months and also I have my two week semester break.

Omg tell me about the diabetic ulcer stuff it's so horrible. I have also seen so many women having to get knee replacements at early 50s with BMIs only in 40s. I've sort of overcome my body image issues from an appearance point of view but working in healthcare and seeing all this horrible obesity related stuff really makes me wanna hit the breaks on my weight.

good luck with your op! x

Hi and Welcome!

My initial BMI was 32.3 last May 2015. I put on 28 kg in 18 months!
Felt terrible, and scared of this rapid weight gain.
Was going to be Sleeved in July 2015, but I was diagnosed with Graves disease by my surgeon's endocrinologist, and had to put VSG on hold.
Had RAI to destroy my thyroid instead, in early August 2015.

In the 7-8 month wait I managed to rapidly gain another 13kg ....
My BMI was 37.1

Although previously I was always slim, the 41 kg gained in 2 years was awful, and I was worried I would double my weight, if nothing was done.

I was also in health care, so I was aware of the possible consequences of being obese.

I can't  completely blame my whooping weight gain on my sick thyroid, however I did develop massive sweet cravings, and I couldn't stop!
And I couldn't sleep, so often I had late night unhealthy snacks ...

Now, 3 months post op, I am half way through my weight loss, and lost my appetite and the sweet cravings.
If I need something sweet, I have my diet jelly with lite custard.

I am grateful for this surgery, as I am slowly reclaiming my health back.

If not for the thyroid serious issues, I would have been operated on at 32.3 BMI as a health prevention and psychological well-being measure.

Good luck to you!

Best Wishes     :)

hello :) thyroid disease can be so insidious, it's lucky to have it diagnosed pre-op. what a rollercoaster it has been for you! having this much excess weight sucks for us lifelong fatties but i can only imagine how horrible it must have been to put it on after you've been slim all your life. in my thinnest i was 63 kgs after starving myself for three months. it didn't last long though hahaha

good luck with your weight loss x

Our stats are similar - I was 90.1kg at my heaviest, I'm (probably just under) 5'6". I had different issues to you, but it's been the best thing for me.I'm in Melbourne, too.  I'm only (almost) 7 mths out, but have lost all of my excess weight & a bit more, and feel fantastic. Don't get me wrong, it's no easy fix, it still requires effort & concentration, but it's certainly a fabulous tool, and I feel confident that I can actually keep the weight off forever this time ! All the best with your journey :-)

hi there, so good to hear your good experience. reading other's experiences here it sure doesn't seem easy at all but a great tool for some of us. at this stage i feel like i need to eat so little to lose, and keep doing that for the rest of my life to keep the weight off. sleeve seems like a good support mechanism for this kind of lifestyle.

do you mind sharing which surgeon you went with? i am having trouble getting online information about melbourne surgeons who consider low BMIs like us. there seems to be heaps of them in other states. you can PM me if that's better :) x

Hi everyone

I'm a newbie from Melbourne. Been lurking around the forum for a few months and soaking up all kinds of good info. I have also been considering the op for about a year but still at research stage as I am BMI 32 with chronic back pain, sciatica and knee joint issues.

My story is pretty similar to most of you. Been chubby my entire life, managed to lose weight with intense and non-sustainable means, restrictive diets, heavy exercise, tiny portions, but always gained it back. I am currently 30 years old, 5'6" and 90 kilos. I don't eat junk food, drink much alcohol, but i do eat a fair bit. I am finding it hard to motivate myself to try simple diet and exercise once again. Even though i am lower BMI than most i still feel unhealthy with 25-30 kgs of excess weight. I am exhausted of dropping 10 kgs and putting it back on.

I work in healthcare and am way too familiar with the joys of insulin resistance and hunger hormones and how they impact on what we put in our mouths. I am also familiar with the complication rates of the lap band and i want to steer clear from that. So that's why i am here.

Anyways this is my essay :) A big hello to all of you  Hello
