Denzel, you poor thing. Hugs! Hope your starting to feel better now. If you don't improve go back, the squeaky wheel gets the oil, lol.

It's so depressing that this type of poor care happens all to often. People pushed out of hospital too early because the bed has already been booked for someone else. I have been nursing a long time and have seen our system deteriorate from being patient centered to being run by CEO's and accountants where the dollar is more important than patient safety. No wonder we get so many "boomerang patients".

PostSubject: Post-op Complications Following Incisional Hernia Repair   Incisional Hernias Not Haematoma EmptySun 05 Jul 2015, 3:43 am

I had a hernia repair (incisional) on 24th June at SJOGM - didn't want to go there as I was very unimpressed on a previous visit, but the surgeon said that theatre staff were better there than at Hollywood. *Sigh* Well, believe me, the nursing care is shocking and the whole saga could have not happened if two basic questions that get asked of ANY patient who has had a GA got asked - and wasn't. ("Have you passed wind?"  "Have you moved your bowels?")
and discharged 26th complete with a paralytic ileus (I had my suspicions, being a nurse). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ileus last meal 25th lunchtime.

Readmitted 27th (ie the next day) with dehydration, paralytic ileus and small bowel obstruction, confirmed on abdo xray. I won't go into details as to what treatment I had :( but there is a good reason why I don't have any dignity left(!) discharged with it unresolved (the surgeon and nursing staff thought that it had, I didn't think so, but hey, what would I know, I am only a patient and a nurse)  Discharged 29th.

Stuck it out at home 30th, went to my GP 1st July, still symptomatic and clinically presented with paralytic ileus and small bowel obstruction, sent for abdo xray, admitted back to Murdoch.

First meal since 25th June dinner Friday 3rd July
Discharged yesterday on the improve not quite resolved, - in fact breakfast (1/3rd of a piece of toast with scrambled eggs on top) caused acute and severe abdo pain, but my mini lunch went down OK; but feels MUCH improved today.

I was carrying about 4 kg in fluid in my abdomen what with having oedematous intestines etc, so no wonder had problems with discomfort, no appetite, couldn't take a deep breath, low grade nausea, and had heaps of pressure on the hernia repair, which by itself is known to be very painful post op (+ an ovarian follicle that lurked for a painful week).

I have never heard of a surgeon not having a restriction on lifting or straining after abdominal surgery because of the risk of incisional hernias. For most it is at least four to six weeks before they give you the all clear.

It's strange how surgeons differ so much isn't it. I had restrictions for 6weeks before I was recommended to go back to normal.

Yeah, I asked the surgeon pre-op about post-op and what could I do, and when - basically it was anything a week later...

That sounds pretty uncomfortable😞

I'm a bit surprised they didn't let you know not to carry anything? All the research I've seen, and my surgeon, said no lifting anything over 5kg and no carrying anything you can't lift with one hand.
for about 4-6weeks.

They will have to invest in some new iv poles! Hope that the repair goes well👍 one of the guys I work with had a hernia op recently and was up and about in no time😊

Incisional Hernias Not Haematoma Empty
PostSubject: Incisional Hernias Not Haematoma   Incisional Hernias Not Haematoma EmptySun 14 Jun 2015, 8:08 am

Hi,

I had my sleeve surgery 2nd Feb this year, and had a bulge near the largest incision (the one where they removed the stomach) after. I just thought that it was a haematoma.
The portable IV pole in hospital steered like a bad super market trolley, and I had to use two hands + back muscles and stomach muscles to move it.

My house went on the market soon (less than 2 weeks) after discharge, and admittedly I was doing a lot of shifting and moving stuff - but wasn't told not to.

Lump didn't resolve.
Got it ultrasounded.
One hernia measuring approx. 4 cm x 3.5 cm  x 1.5 cm.
and a small umbilical one measuring about .5 cm x .5 cm

Had requested a copy of results go to surgeon, was contacted by them and temporary appt made.
Was rung by them about a week later, and told, no need to come in, surgeon has seen the results, it's only a little umbilical hernia.
I said, well what about the other one? the one measuring approx. 4 cm x 3.5 cm  x 1.5 cm?
Anyway, I kept the appt.

I saw him on Friday.
"No need to do urgently but will need to be done at some stage."

I am only the third patient of his to develop these post sleeve.
The first was a male farmer who went back to work too soon...
the second was a woman who he doesn't know why she developed them.
And then me. I said that the drip pole in hospital steered like a really bad supermarket trolley!

Booked in for 24th June (ie this month) at SJOG Murdoch ( Incisional Hernias Not Haematoma Sad not happy with the nursing care there).
Will be painful - they use metal tacks to join the mesh to the muscle (ick) and will be in for a couple of days.
This time taking my lap-top and a modem.
