PostSubject: Re: Mirena IUD   Mirena IUD EmptyThu 28 Nov 2013, 6:37 am

Well I've now had mine for about 6 months... I'm a fan. For the most part.

I don't like that I have had increased discharge since having it in, but I've only had 1 (or maybe 2?) periods in the last 6 months, both were pretty much nothing and lasted something like 3 days.

The bleeding took about 2 or so months to go away, but by the end it was only pinkish discharge.

At the end of the day, I like not having to worry about whether I'm pregnant every month because I can never remember to take my pill on time.

I've had mine about 2 years exactly and went in for annual checkup this week. Doc couldn't see the strings so sent me off for an ultrasound which (thankfully) showed everything in the right place, just probably the strings are curled up behind the cervix. I was pretty sure it hadn't fallen out because I still don't get periods. I am planning on removing it within the next year and trying for a bub (eek at my old age!) so we'll see how they remove it when they can't see the strings!

This is what one looks like.  This was mine after it was removed.

The top part of the T is bendy and you can see the strings.

The strings are like fishing wire, they hang from your cervix but aren't long enough to be outside the body. You (or your partner) shouldn't be able to feel them without looking for them, iykwim.

My gynae told me to check they are there every 6 mths or so (just with your fingers)

The strings are there so the mirena can be found and for removal.

I've had mine since around 2008, and it was an absolute Godsend! Periods from hell, up to ten days, and they were so heavy that I had to sleep in a chair.

Had the Mirena inserted, no serious side effects apart from hellish cramps for about a week or two, and in the 5 or so years since, I've had maybe three periods, which I put down to be stress related.

I had one inserted in February. Within a day I had a period that lasted about the normal time.

The following 3 1/2 months after that, I had the light bleeding/spotting during the day that you spoke of.

Once my fiancé got home and we were intimate again, I couldn't find the strings so I had it checked. It had slipped and needed to be taken out.

As much as I wished it had worked for me, it's quite costly and I hardly had a period before going on it but bled almost the whole 5 months I had it in.

I'm hoping the fiancé can get a vasectomy and then we'll be ok.

A friend of mine has had two and no issues with either. She also doesn't have her period but just gets the symptoms each month.

I wish you luck with yours :)

I had one from 2003 to 2008.  Loved it!  Had no period in that time.

I have since gone on to have a 3rd child and keep thinking it might be a good idea to have another put in, but it hasn't happened yet.  I think I might send dh off to get a vasectomy instead.

Thanks guys.

Going to admit, I'm not a fan yet. It's been 12 days and I'm still bleeding.

Not period bleeding - but a reddy/pink discharge. It's not cool.. It makes me feel yuck as the dr said NO tampons for the first month!

I thought the bleeding had stopped straight away.. But noooo....

Funnily enough though, I only tend to bleed during the day, not of a night time. Hmmm.....

Mine is due to expire (5yrs) in December this year.
When if first had it inserted, my periods were very very light - just a 'show'.
Since the op (8-9 months ago) I have had very irregular (constant) heavier period.
I'm going to have it taken out - I'm not concerned about getting pregnant.... I hear you have to have sex to fall victim to that... so I'm very safe!!
But I'm hoping maybe it's just at the end of it's life, and a new one might get me back on a lighter track???
Worth a try anyway.

I had mine inserted over a year ago and I like it. My periods were light but now are moderate and I rarely get period pain.

You do need to have it checked 1-2 times per year as I was told that they can slip out of place and know a few people who have fallen pregnant while having one!

Hi - I had the Mirena as part of a trial and had 3 over 15 years. Had painful periods for 3 months, but no worse than normal, I only mention it as it went away so I remember it!

Brilliant in my opinion, I have a form of haemophilia (hence the trial) and it reduced my periods to minor spotting.

I have been told that they aren't recommended to anyone with PCOS. So I haven't asked for one :(

I went on the shot and that was the worst thing I ever did. Last shot was well over two years ago and still no period... Must have really stuffed up my system.

Im a nurse at The Women's here in Melbourne, I work in theatre and so much of our time is spent inserting Mirena's, and the Doctors swear by them as one of the best revolutions in contraception / control of heavy bleeding and irregular periods. Uncomfortable to insert, a bit painful after that, and then 5 years of (hopefully) controlled bleeding and contraception.

Most women really love them.

I had an IUD many years ago, I remember it being nothing but painful from the word go. The Dr, after a couple of weeks did a check and it somehow slipped?? Still do not quite understand; but I had to have it taken out while asleep. Wasn't a very good experience the whole way to the end. I hope it settles down soon.

I had one a few years ago, and I remembered it was unpleasant when the doctor inserted it and I had cramps and period. I had it in for 3 years and hardly got my periods at all, which was good. Then my body rejected it. I had bad pain and passed out with it. It was supposed to last for 5 years, but my doctor said that sometimes it doesn't last as long in older women- great. Anyway, I've got 4 children and am in my forties, so had my tubes clamped bout 3 years ago, so don't have to worry about pregnancy anymore  :)

I had one put in too many years ago and need to get it removed.  I had really light periods for 3 months and then nothing at all.

Now that it is overdue to come out I have periods very small and light.

I remember when I had it inserted I had period type cramps for a day or two.

I love mine and would recommend it to anyone.
