| Those inflating leg thingies are awesome - like a continual massage. I had them when I had ankle surgery. All the small spider veins in my leg disappeared!
Wore stockings after sleeve though - was good though as it was winter and they kept my legs warm!
I used to wear them when I fly longer than 4 hours. They are warm if nothing else.
Now that I am not morbidly obese, i probably don't need them!! YAY to just being Overweight!!

| Good luck Bella, today is the big day!! And it's not too late to back out... Not until you go under, as I was laying on the table on the operating room still thinking "am I doing the right thing," and said so to the surgeon, and he reassured me, but did say I still had a choice and could call it off, but I am now happy that I didn't back out, as I would have still been very unhappy with myself and my life, whereas now things are getting better! It is only natural to be concerned, but you have already weighed up the pros and cons, so keep thinking of the pros!! Again, good luck, I hope everything goes well for you, and see you on the other side! | |

| Hi Tammy, I know it probably sounded bad in my post, but truth be told it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I had expected it to be. I too had the Calf massaging things.... I'm a bit of a hot bod when I am in hospital and have restless legs, so the massaging things really annoyed me and I tried to keep them off, but the nurses usually caught me and put them back on. I discovered using pillows the night i came home form hospital. It reminded me of when i was pregnant and wanted to sleep on my side but my stomach was to heavy lol Last night I was able to sleep on my left side for the first time and it felt sooo good. My left has been the sorest because that where the drain was. yesterday was a bit of an off day but today I am back t feeling almost normal again. will just continue to take it one day at a time javascript:emoticonp(' ') Jubby | |

| wow jubby u had alot of pain.
i never had any of those needles but i had those stockings on my legs - a pair too small they were sorta cutting circulation off - i rang the nurse and said i need to take themoff - she said gosh who put these on and went and got the right ones. much better and also some things arund my calves that pumped air up anddown - to stimulate the circulation - so maybe this was done instead of needles - kept my legs warm lol
yep slept abuot 9-12 hours after on and off, had the barium about 4 hours after my op. hard to do when ur doped out lol... morphine will give u nausea an dwant to vomit - it does to me - so i told them -use sparingly - i only had panadol when i came out and it was a lil uncomfy but nothing too bad
i was up and out withing 2 days - extra pillows at home to sleep with - and yeh sitting up is a bit sore for a few days but yes heat packs will help.
you will be fine - expect the worst and best will come ;)

| Hi Bella,
I had my gastric sleeve resection on wednesday the 30th May and I know how nervous you must be right now. I had to wait from admission at 9am until 3pm when i was finally wheeled into the operating theatre. and at that time my fears and doubts were at an all time high which had probably been building up for the last week. I was crying before pre-admission and told the surgical assistant that If I had to wait any longer when he came back i would still be in the bed in the little room outside the theatre, because i would have gone to find my clothes and gone home. His reply was that they would be worried if I wasn't feeling some sort of fear. They didn't make me wait to long after that and the anetheisiest came out and put the canula in with some stuff that made my head feel fuzzy and took the edge of the worry a little. less then 10min later I was out of it and the next thing i knew i was in recovery.
About an hour before the op and over the course of the next few days they gave me Heperin (not sure of the spelling). this was to help with tinning the blood and stop clots) the needles are best given in the stomach but because of the nature of the surgery i was given it in the thigh. it stings a little but don't rub it because it gives you horrible bruises, even when you don't touch it after. I haven't bought any home with me. I was only prescibed Panadol for pain and Nexiam (again don't know spelling) which is to reduce amount of acid in the stomach and assist with Healing. My chemist also told me it is a reflux medication. I have been wearing the support stocking but have decided not to wear them anymore today as they were cutting of blood supply to my feet as they kept rolling down.
When I woke up in recovery I found it hard to breath as the pain was high in my chest and it was painful to get a full breath. I was shivering and the nurses told me it was because of the drugs i was given in surgery. so I had to breath deeply (some what hard when every breath was so painful) eventually the nurses found a PSA and set it up and the effect although not instant put me into sleepy state so that the pain eventually faded from what it was.
I was in and out of sleepyness over the next 9 hours. I do rememeber the PSA beeping because the canula had mucked up and the had to call another doctor to come and put another one in. i the when back to sleep until 3am with the nurse coming in to do hourly ob's.
At 3 am the nurse asked if i would like to get up and as the pain was the best it had been all night i decided i would try. I was really surprised how good I was as I rememeber having my appendix out and don't remember it being that "easy". when I got back into bed i could sleep and was in pain again so I pressed the PSA button. with in 20seconds i felt like I was going to be sick. and rang the Buzzer for the nurse. she told me it could make me nauseous, and i should try not to use it. she gave me some anti neausier medicine and the feelings settled. the only time I used the PSA again was the next day and instantly I was Vomiting. (this is the worst thing to do when you have had a gastric sleeve done, luckly the nurses were quick with the medication and it settled quickly. the nurses also gave me a towel which i was to grip my stomach with when ever the feeling came on. all in all I have been happy with the experience so far. I admit I didn't know i would be able to drink until 48hrs after the surgery and until I had had another Barium swallow Xray to make sure all was fine with swallowing ( i have minimum reflux but figure when am I ever going to put myself upside down after I eat).
My doctor has said I am allowed 3 Optifast shakes a day, water and tea (no milk or sugar). and only experience burping after i drink ( am hoping this might pass as the swelling reduces) the worst thing at the moment is the pack pain form the Gas they use in the surgery, Lots of walking helps this. Went to the shops today with my family as the Sydney weather at the moment is horrible and would suggest you invest in a heat bag for your back if you haven't already go one.
I think thats all I have to say and best of Luck for your Surgery. I know I would have been more at ease if I had a run down of what was going to happen. Plus I know every surgery is different but I hoped this might help you.

| Hi again Bella. Yes I had the injections. It is called Clexane and often is utilised as post op policy in most hospitals by most surgeons to prevent post op blood clots (in any operation not just the GS) which can result in deep vein thrombosis in the legs or as a pulmony embolism in the lung. I only had them while in hospital. As MissHel has already pointed out, surgeons policies and preferences can be different. The injections are ok. They are subcutaneous injections that go into the skin, usually the lower abdomen or upper thigh and don't sting too bad. The other thing to prevent clots is to be as mobile as possible so they will encourage you to do laps of the ward every now and then. I know all this seems overwhelming and scary, but it is ok. You have come to the right place for support and to bounce of some people for their experiences and encouragement | |

| Hi Bella!
Every surgeon is different. Mine will be giving me some injections to take home for 10 days after and others just have a tablet to prevent clotting, some have nothing. I would worry' worst case if you do have to have them any general GP clinic will have a nurse who can do it for you. I'm getting my man to do mine.
I hope the stress levels and second thoughts gave gone away a bit now. Well maybe not the stress.... We're only 2 days away now and I'lll be right there with ya buddy! Can't wait to get this over. I must admit I'm worried about how I'll feel after. But I'm sure I'll deal.
Good luck and try to relax. I'm shopping on online - its helps to look at things I might be able to wear soon.

| Hi Bella!
Its normal to be scared and having second thoughts and it is good that you know the side effects as it is part of making a well informed decision.
As for the reflux, I had reflux before the sleeve and after the sleeve was done, I found I don't have it anymore I asked my surgeon about this and his response was that they have found that some people who have reflux pre sleeve seem to have it disappear after the sleeve. He also stated that the conference he attended on the gastric sleeve (he attended it the day after he operated on me) had a topic about reflux and the sleeve and it seems that reflux occurs when the staple line has not been put in as straight as it should be. Apparently if the staple line is nice and straight reflux is minimised if not eliminated!

I always worried when I did that with the kids and now that I have put on 25kgs more wouldn't even try it. I just want to be able to walk into a room and not survery it to see if I am the fattest woman in the room ... which invariably I am. I told some friends the other day that I wanted to me a MILF!

- Hi Everyone,
thank you for all your words, after a bit of a mini breakdown last night good cry and chat to mum i know this is definately the right thing for me and my family..With a history of heart disease in my family my dad passing away suddenly from a heart attack in 2009..I need to do this so i am around for my little boy for a lot more years to come..after battling with my weight since i was 15 , having fought PCOS for the last 7 years and in severe pain whenever it decides to strike and now finding out i am insulin resistance something has to give.....i think what has been putting me of is the negativity i have getting from people who dont understand why i am going to such drastic measures..but as my hubby put it last night stuff them they are just jealous that you are going to look hotter than them..and they dont have to live my life with the constant struggle of weight loss and always being on the next fad way to lose weight...
Thank you everyone for your comments and i look forward to my next entry post op....eeek Glad to hear you have made the decision to go ahead with it, don't take any notice of people who are negative, their not the ones who are struggling through life, best thing you can do is get the op and show them the final results, that will silence them and show them why this op was a great choice. I look forward to reading about your journey to a new and healthier life. Cheers Scott

| Hi Bella I'm one of those with the reflux issue and I can tell you now that I DON'T regret having the sleeve done. My weightloss hasn't been fast, but it's steady and I'm pretty sure my surgeon will be able to deal with the reflux without any major operation. The sleeve is an amazing tool. It doesn't control what you put in your mouth, just the volume. The best advice I can give is to say 1) The first weeks are not easy and you will become sick to death of mushies and liquids - so be prepared 2) Once it all settles down you'll be as happy as a clam 3) Serious complications are seriously rare! 4) You may not "love" your sleeve immediately (I didn't), but the love will grow the further out you get. My saving grace has been this site. I've "met" some fantastic people who are incredibly supportive and non-judgmental. We all stuff up somewhere along the line, but if you follow your doctors orders to the letter the chances of something going wrong are infinitely small. Good luck on your journey. You'll be healthy in no time! | |
