| Thanks Lin.
I'm actually doing OK on protein - exceeding my dietitian's requirements most days. I track everything I'm eating rather obsessively and am currently eating six times a day just to get enough calories (which I know flies in the face of some surgeons' advice).
The reality is I am just second guessing everything at the moment - I think I probably just need to relax and accept that everyone is different and that whatever I'm doing is working for me - I've never felt better!
Thanks again for your help!

| ummm, try not to stress about weight gain. if you are burning lots of cals you need to be putting in or you will get sick. have you written down what you are eating? how often do you eat? you might need to add in some high protein/cal foods.
does your surgeon do fups? I know dr d does. maybe call your surgeon/dietician and go back. your dietician should be able to help. you might want to consider seeing a counsellor if you are worried about weight gain. do you have any weight loss surgery cookbooks? have you checked out the recipe section here?
maybe post a topic asking for high protein meal recipes.

| Hi Lin
I had surgery in August 2011 and am below my goal weight. My dietician said she didn't need to see me again after about 3 months, but I guess I could go back to her. My surgeon just suggested it was a bit of trial and error working out what you need to do to maintain, but I guess I'm looking for a more scientific answer. It is mainly how to adjust my diet given I'm burning 800 calories a day that concerns me.
Thanks for those links, apparently I need 1500 calories for maintenance - I'm really struggling to go over 800! I just don't know if I eat say 1500 calories then continue to burn around 800 per day whether I should eat more to compensate - so scared of regaining!
Thanks again Katie | |

here's the type of site i was after. it tells you the cals/kj you need to function on a day to day basis. don't let it freak you out it you think, how can I eat all that etc. How you tried adding protein powder?
I am sure some sleevers will have more ideas. I have brought some Syntrax protein powder, it has no carbs added, just pure protein, I am still trying to figure out how to drink it without lumps lol

| jacko84, so the cal equalvalent is 2866. means if you wanted to maintain your current weight thats what you'd need to eat. it does say eat more carbs to protein, which is a standard advice these days.
katy83, you didnt mention if you have reached goal weight? are you feeling unwell because you aren't getting enough cals in vs cals out. have you contacted your surgeon/dietician? how long ago did you have surgery?
cheers | |

| Hi everyone
I'm hoping someone can offer some guidance about adjusting my daily calorie intake to take into account the calories I am burning through exercise. I'm at the stage where I am looking towards trying to maintain my weight at its current level (although truth be told I wouldn't mind dropping another two kilos at the absolute maximum). I'm eating about 800 - 1000 calories a day still, which I know is probably not enough for the maintenance phase (but I'm not sure how many I should really eat to maintain).
The complication is exercise. I am really pushing myself at the moment in large part because I am really enjoying the activity as a contrast to my extremely sedentary 12+ hour day desk job. At the moment I'm riding my stationary exercise bike twice a day, for about an hour or hour and a quarter total. I'm also doing 20 minutes of weight training every second day and most days I walk for 45 minutes with my husband (trying to encourage him to get a bit more exercise too). Having calculated the calories burned I am often burning all, or at least most, of the 800 calories I am consuming. I probably won't keep doing this much exercise long term, but am really enjoying it at the moment.
I know as a general principle it is best not to eat the calories you burn with exercise, but I'm thinking that it can't be good for me to be having negative net calories, or less than 200 net calories, most days. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I should balance calorie intake and exercise?
Thanks in advance Katie.
