| Mira, do you have Super? You can access the fee from you super on compassionate grounds. It is considered a 'life saving' surgery and therefore can enable you to access the money from super. All you need is a letter from the GP and the surgeon each stating that this surgery is necessary for you as you have life threatening complications from obesity (it does have to be worded specifically). That is how myself and many others have been able to pay. I was lucky my surgeon had a one off fee of $4950 that covered the works of surgery, anaesthetist, psychologist, and dietician. All I was otherwise out of pocket for was the $250 hospital excess on my PHI. | |

Who has had it cheaper in Melbourne Most of us applied through APRA to have some of our superannuation released early for the surgery.. There's not many people out there who just have the money sitting around.

| Hey Mira,
When I saw Dr Frydenberg he quoted pretty much the same as everyone else... around the $6000 mark. I have PHI and waited out the year cos I was told it would potentially be in excess of $20000 if i didn't... massive difference!
Keep me posted on how you go with deciding on a surgeon! :)

| So those of you who paid 6k,who was your doctor.. I have an appointment to see one in a fortnight. Might call and get the price first.
Don't want to faint in front of him...
I don't see the point of PHI if they charge so much more additional.

I am with HIF and my surgeon charges no gap so I had to pay him a fee of $1000, the hospital excess whihc was $225 and the sleep dr was $600 so i think i got out of it pretty cheap!
maybe ring your surgeon and ask the reception girls how much he charges on top of your fund cover. You will also need to ring your fund and get a quote from them as to the max they will cover for him and the hospital. Even though i had private - i had a shared room (no extra) but lucky for me i didnt have to share so ended up private with no extra costs. Chat to your fund - they are really helpful
J - still stunned how good you look after all your loss - well done

| Different surgeons seem to charge different amounts.. Personally I was out of pocket about 6000.

| Can anyone tell me how much it looks like costing them out of pocket. I got health insurance, had it over a year now so I am told it will cover it but never used health insurance before so have no idea! | |

| ohhhh - re fitness pal - will have to go look at that
see here for 2 mins and your helping already :) its what this site is, and has helped me tremondously to make decisions and have support.
my dr was adamant not to go the bypass (kept sayin 1 in 100 death rate)... ok that was enough for me lol..but really it wasnt an option for me. Too drastic too soon and your young. Sleeve will lose what you need and you will come out fairly tone.
Soo happy your here and doin this xx

| myfitnesspal, it is an app for iphone or you can just use the website. You log all your food and excercise. It has made me accountable and a bunch of my friends are using it also.
I just find that I must have stretched my stomach so much from the over eating that I never feel full or satisfied and look to eat more. I figure the sleeve may help. I was going to get the bypass as I can't get the band but am very happy to find a middle ground. With 2 businesses and 2 toddlers I don't have time to be laid up for a long time after surgery. I recover pretty quick from key hole!

| fantastic loss on your own hun, I know how hard it is.
HIGHLY suggest the sleeve, it will help you pass those obtacles and mean a lifetime of coping with not eating too much.
Family - gotta love them - thinking its a joke at that age but really its downputting.. big hugs
So whats this fitness first thing your talking about on your fridge?

| This is the thread for me, I have just gone under 150. I started at about 175 and this morning I was 146. I am currently using myfitnesspal to try and keep on top of things.
I have always been very big, even as a kid, over 100 since 14 or 15. My parents call me the chair breaker, even as a kid because they always managed to break when I sat on them. Never mind dads fat bum! Only ever blame me!
I have an appointment to see a surgeon in 2 weeks to discuss the sleeve. I fell I need to shrink my stomach if I am ever to succeed. In reality I should weight 80 kgs with all the weight I have lost as a tota., problem is I put it back on. 30kgs off, 35kgs on and so on!
