| Thanks for the info i had heard of it but never looked into it, im very happy with my permanent WLS, it not only changed my life but it has taught me how to eat and exercise correctly....and i think thats the most important thing about the sleeve, it teaches you new ways to live you life....as my opinion strictly on my gf's life struggle with their bands, it has not taught them anything, they eat more junk now then before.... | |

| I did have a bit of a look at the balloons myself in my research when deciding what I would option I would go for, The Orbera balloon is a 6 month balloon and is really for people who don't have a huge amount to lose or who are not sure if they want to go down the full surgical path. There is a new 12 month balloon now on the market called the Spatz balloon and designed (obviously) to remain in place for 12 months for larger weight losses. IT does cost a packet and is not covered by health insurance. I believe that the weight loss can be reasonable for some, but temporary if old eating habits haven;t changed and I read of some people having them removed not long after insertion as they felt so sick with them in. I am glad I opted for the sleeve! | |

| Over the 6 years of being on WLS sites I have heard about and followed the progress of people who have gone down the balloon road.
It has poor weightloss results which dont last....the balloon needs continual top ups like a band as you lose the weight and hunger raises up.
My opinion is dont bother... its anesthetic for something that is short term weight loss and in some cases not more than 10 kilos. Which as we know is not even a dent in someone needing to lose a good amount. And lets face it if your willing to face the knife to get it off... you usually have a significant amount to lose.
Most people that I have followed have moved on to band or sleeve after 6months.. which is an expensive detour when you look at it |

| Yeah, the notion of a foreign body in my tummy trips me out more than having it chopped off. I never did feel comfortable with my lap band and port floating around my insides. | |

| My friend said the same 6 months only. From a RN point of view anything down your throat sounds risky- LOL more so than having 2/3 rds of your stomach removed. I wonder what it feels like? My friend said she just wants a temp measure as she feels she just needs a jump start. But I think if I spend that kind of money and pain/stress I might as well as go the whole hog! | |

| Hi Melinda,
I have heard of this and looked into it. From memory it costs about $5000. the thing is it really is temporary (about a 3 ~ 6 month life of balloon) I think.
There are some websites hat you can get some more info from. I would say that it is probably not very popular owing to it's price and it's temporary nature.
Essentially, if you are obese to the extent that you are considering something more drastic than the norm (ie: surgical intervention), then you are looking for something permanent and for the price, your money is far better spent on a sleeve than a balloon.
Please note that this is just my opinion and certainly not a medical recommendation, just an educated assumption from someone who has been researching the subject for about 3 years, is short of $$ and is about 50kg overweight ;(

| I've never heard of it either and no mention about it from my GP who is very switched on and knows most things that are going on. Maybe she just think it was a good alternative for me. | |

| Ye... I've heard of it - saw it on TV, one of those current affair programs. I think its meant to be a temporary non surgical solution, used to kick start rapid weight loss to assist where other diets have been unsuccessful, to boost motivation to healthier diet and exercise etc. A colleague of mine had one inserted and had a good immediate result 18kg in 5 months. She was wrapped as she lost the weight she wanted before her wedding. She has been unable to sustain her weight loss though, sadly regaining 5kg over the past 2 months. She recognizes that this procedure hasn't really changed her longer term dietary preferences or habits. She is now considering a band or sleeve. I think she can only have the balloon in place for up to 6 months at a time...? | |

| The reason why I started researching the sleeve was because a friend had mentioned she was researching having a balloon inserted. It is a temporary device similar to the band. It stops you from eating large amounts. Has anyone else heard of this? My GP never mentioned it. | |
