| Hello Ive progressed in my journey. I did a few phone interviews with 3 surgeons offices and I have decided to go with Dr Wong on the Central coast. I conversed with him on the phone for over half an hour and he was so professional and knowledgable. I feel comfortable with my decision. I am meeting with him on 24 February 2012 then the dietician and have requested a surgery date of 16 or 23 March. Im a bit of a control freak so like to get things moving! Where do I find the people getting sleeved in my month? I might start a diary entry to clear my head. I had a psychic tell me that I undergo surgery which leads to a short bout of deep depression about 3 days post operation. Lets hope she is full of it! | |

| Hi Spirited, I had many of the same fears as you.. I'm a definite veggie lover. At the moment, I'm struggling to fit veggies in but I do as much as I can keeping in mind always the "protein first" rule, it doesn't leave much room but I know it does get easier to work out the balance over time! For me, the sleeve was absolutely the best thing I've ever done for myself. For the first time in my life, I am becoming comfortable in myself. So far I've lost only 23kg's which is a small loss compared to some of the people in this site but I can not even begin to explain what it's like to know that you've lost 'that much' and that you are going to lose more. It does take some effort, there is some trial and error but the end result... the feeling of worth and this weird kind of inner pride. It's an amazing feeling and one that I can only imagine many of the other 'sleevers' feel too.. Good luck on your journey, I'm in the Upper Hunter so not too far away. I was also sleeved by Dr Taylor and, if the money it would cost for accommodation isn't really an issue, then I'd spend it and go with him. As Kate said, it's well worth the trip and the level of knowledge and care are excellent. I was in Concord Hospital and found them to be supportive, understanding and was lucky enough to have all wonderful nurses. 10 days is a long time to be away from your family.. luckily my kids are almost grown up but my sister did bring them down for a visit which was great... Whatever you choose to do, follow your surgeon's instructions... let yourself heal gently, it's much better for you and most of all, look forward to the possibilities that this opens up. Can you tell I'm happy with my sleeve?? Welcome to the forum also Eilish. Best of luck with your journey and I'll look forward to catching up on everyone's progress. | |

| Hi Spirited, and welcome to this loverly forum, containing great information for newbies.
I am also a Newbie to this site. In my previous life 1 year ago I decided to have the Lap Band OMG what a mistake. But I can assure you that those days have since past, and I had my Band removed 2 weeks ago.
Just now waiting till mid March and I will be off and running with my new sleeve. Yes it is a bit daunting, but the fat lady will be no more. I think the closer you get to Surgery the more anxious you become - but it is going to be worth it.
Good luck on your new life,
Suzy Blue | |

| Hi Sprited welcome to the group and to you too Eilish,
I was sleeved almost a month ago and I haven't had one moment of regret so far.
In relation to Dr Wong on the Central coast - I originally saw him for a consult approx 2 years ago and he said he has done many sleeves mostly when he worked in New Zealand (can't remember the exact number) so I was quite confident in him, unfortunately he wouldn't do the sleeve until I finished having children so I went away and had my 2nd son last September. He was also very nice to talk to.
I ended up having my sleeve done by Dr Munro (who by the way is gorgeous! not relevant but who cares LOL) who works from the same building as Dr Wong, because my GP had her lapband done by Dr Munro and works with him in his obesity clinic (mostly band follow ups). Dr Munro has only recently started doing sleeves but has a very extensive history and experience removing pieces of stomach for people with cancer etc ( and is a very highly rated surgeon on the central coast) and he has a zero leakage rate so far sleeve wise and was lovely to talk to so I ended up going with him.
hope that helps. | |

| welcome sprirted.
I know that you have made the right decision. Just going on this forum, is the right thing to do, as you can read and digest everyone's notes.
I am being sleeved on Monday, and like you I had been previously banded for 5 years, and only 2/12years were great. I really don't know what happended, but reading alot of peoples thoughts on this forum, I understand now that heaps of people were going through a similar story to mine...couldn't eat much, constant vommitting, and living on high calorie food to get foot into me....yogurt, custard, soups. No fun to try and go out for lunch/tea and only find a couple of things on the menu.
It sounds like to me, that as everyone on this forum that has had the sleeve done, that they can eat basicaly everything, but just only a small amount....sounds great!
I wish you all the best, and I am sure that this is the best thing that you can do.
I have read mixed posts on how much weight ex-banders loose, some say have no problem with loosing and some say a little slower than sleevers that haven't had the band, but I say it's gotta be a hell alot better than putting weight on again! As we all have had a food problem and we need a tool to help us not put on the weight....bring it on Monday.
Cheers Shirley | |

| thank you for your lovely welcome Kate, it would be a very lonely journey without your support so I am wishing to express my gratitude in the existence of this forum and for the fellowship and encouragement of the Sleevers here. I just weighed myself and I'm 2 kilos lighter than before I went into hospital to be sleeved, so I'm feeling very encouraged already by the very early changes. Like you Kate, I wish for my goal weight to be 65 kilos which was my wedding-day weight at 21. I am now 42 and am surprised how my weight has crept on over the years. My highest weight was in 2003 at 112 kilograms, I was banded by George Kiroff and then had that band replaced in 2008, but after the second slip and lots of reflux I sought another alternative to banding as I tend to be an emotional eater and seek refuge in carbs especially as a vegetarian - lots of rice, pasta, noodles!!! I am now looking forward to this re-birth as a Sleever and hope that we can all support each other to achieve our goals and if anyone would like to add me as a friend, I invite them to. blessings to you all

| A big welcome to you too Eilish. Glad to hear your recovery is going well. There is details on what meet-ups are coming up in the "Sleever's Get Togethers" thread. I'm sure I saw one there for Geelong but not sure how often they meet. If you feel up to it maybe you can suggest a meeting and get the ball rolling. Good luck with everything and keep us posted of your progress.

| Subject: Gastric sleeve newbie - too! Sat 04 Feb 2012, 3:32 am | |
| I've just come out of Geelong Private Hospital. I was sleeved on Friday night. It took a little longer because of the lesions from my two previous lap - bands. Associate Professor Kiroff said I'm right to start my straw-diet and I had this confirmed with the Dietician Sally Morgan. Basically anything through a straw is ok for the next few weeks. I'm on Protein Revival and fruit juices, I am so glad to be back home from hospital although the care was wonderful. Anyone contemplating the Gastric Sleeve can be assured that you're in good care and as long as you're not silly with eating or gulping foods in the first stage can relax and know that their weight will come off smoothly. I was supported by a staffer there at Geelong Private who's been sleeved in the last few months and she's lost just over 20 kilos now so that's encouraging to see. I appreciate the love and support of the sleevers on here too and if there's any Geelong sleeve meet-ups it would be lovely to meet you in person to continue the support. blessings on your journeys Eilish | |

| Hi Spirited and welcome to the forum. I was sleeved by Dr Taylor at The Oclinic and couldn't recommend or praise them enough. They are all fantastic. I travelled 700km to have Dr Taylor as my surgeon and I would do it again in heartbeat. It meant I had to stay in Sydney for 2 weeks so that I could be close to his facilities but again it was worth it and I would do it all again. I think the amount of sleeves he has done all total is about 3000 now and he still has 0% leaks. My own GP used him for a lap band and that speaks volumes to me. The only thing I have found that doesn't sit well in my new tummy is oily food and bread. But hey, who needs them, right. I very rarely eat carbs as I only see these as empty calories now. Pre sleeve my food intake was probably about 60% carbs and I also drank a lot of Diet Coke. I don't drink any soft drink at all now and I honestly don't miss it. GR is right about the hair loss, I have had many operations over the years and have lost hair from all of them. I take the hair, skin and nails supplement but it won't stop your hair from falling out, however it will help when your hair starts to grow again. Good luck with everything and whoever you decide to be your surgeon. Keep us posted of your progress. | |

| Welcome & Congratulations on making this huge decision.
I was banded for 10 years and have now been sleeved for 3 months. I find the sleeve so much easier. I can basically eat anything I want, but in smaller portions (although some things do sit heavier than others). I had terrible trouble with vomiting with the band, but have not vomited once since the sleeve (with exception to one day about a week post op after drinking a supradyn). I can go out to dinner and eat a small meal without needing to rush off to the loo to bring back up what I just ate (this happened so often with the band it's not funny).
I had random excruciating abominable pains when sleeved ... had gall bladder removed and incisional hernia repaired but the pain continued. Since having the band removed last April I have been pain free. My quality of life is so much better and after 3 months of being sleeved, with fairly slow weight loss compared to some I am already almost down to the lowest weight I ever achieved with the band.
All the best with your decision. | |

| Welcome! I am 11 months out, and basically vegetarian myself. I counter this by adding a good protein powder ( whey based protein, with no flavours) to all my cooking. You will lose hair no matter WHAT you do! The hair loss is due to the anaesthetic and the operation (your body goes into shock) and has nothing to do with the sleeve itself. We take vitamins every day, and if you are getting plenty of protein you should be fine. I lost hair(like everyone in here) for the first five months, but then in grew back, and is normal again. It was not that noticeable, but use a good shampoo, and get a good cut to keep it thick and healthy looking. I lost all my weight within seven months, and I have never looked back. This is the BEST thing I have ever done! Welcome to the forum! | |

| Hi and welcome to the forum!
Quick answers:
1. I've already eaten some salad without issues, so yes salads are more than possible, they're making a regular appearance now (I'm 8 weeks post op) 2. Keep up your protein targets and you'll lose minimal hair. It doesn't drop out like male pattern baldness, it's more like a few hairs here and there, which is barely noticeable. My wife had the pleasure of basically no more underarm hair / leg hair that grows really slowly. 3. Being a vegetarian means you may struggle with getting adequate protein immediately after the free fluid phase and before when you can eat the sort of quantities you'll be on for the rest of your life. Make sure you see a dietician to guide you through an appropriate diet at each phase - it's entirely possible, I just don't know how to do it because I eat meat.
Unless you overeat, most of us don't experience vomiting.
Everyone has some anxiety. If you feel overwhelmed or its continuous, it's best if you see a local psychologist who specialises in weight loss surgery issues. Ask for a referral from your surgeon. But come back here often and ask all the questions you need. The more information you have the better informed you'll be, and the fear of the unknown will be banished.
Gastric sleeving is a pretty safe operation (your surgeon will fill you in on complications), and it's certainly safer than being morbidly obese. Good for you, and I look forward to reading your diaries, etc.

| Hello. I think I have finally made the decision. I wished it, researched it and now all the must haves are lining up and financially I am ready to go. I have a bit of nausia though because im also a little anxious what it will mean long term for me. Will I be able to eat salads, will I be able to keep the hair on my head, will I have excess aweful skin? all run though my head. I live in newcastle but am pretty sure I am going to choose Oclinic for my surgery. They do over 45 a week (sleeve and bands) and in newcastle Dr Garni had done 10 when I enquiried today so it concerns me a little bit. The admin staff seem friendlier at Oclinic she was quite rude to be honest at Gateshead weightloss clinic. I dont think they realise how hard it is to pick up the phone. Financially the difference is $1k. It is cheaper in sydney but by the time I pay for an appartment for the week it will work out the same. ... but just phoned Dr Ken Wong and got to speak with him direct and being central coast might be even better as an option. Has anyone had Dr Ken Wong I tried to search but came up empty. I am 36, finished having children, have a wonderful supportive husband and 2 toddlers and am just to fat to function. I need to do this for me. I want a life. I want the thin person inside to come outside. argg.. any comments, suggestions. I dont know if I am anxious because I am excited ive finally made the decision in my head or anxious because I am getting 3/4 of an organ removed. Either way I have to do something weither it be sleeve or band, but the idea of no fresh fruit, limited veges and constant vomiting really freak me out with the band. I have a high vegetarian diet so would struggle. Im happy with my choice but I also know that I cant tell people in the real world about it as they will be prejudice and have strong opinons. I just really need support and factual information though - especially since I am very much a control freak. anyway. Hello. My name is *spirited and I am going to be a gastric sleeve! | |
