| My surgeon didn't put me on opti. As far as I know he didn't have any issues in getting my liver out of the way. | |

| I did Opti for six weeks before my sleeve and was so terrified my liver would still be too fat, i was so paranoid of it i remember waking up after the op and trying to count the number of incisions on my tummy as i knew if i had five it meant i had been done.
For me the fear of things going wrong was nothing, to that fear of my liver not letting me be done.

| i think if i was a surgeon i'd want to do things that gave me every chance of success - don't get why they don't ask all people to do it anything that helps! | |

| I'd hardly say its "cruel" that some surgeons tell you to do opti and some don't..
If someone was really that against doing it then I'd have serious doubts if I were the surgeon that that person was actually serious about wanting to change their lifestyle.
Its 2-4 weeks.. Compared to what a lifetime. Pretty easy choice if you ask me.
Opti sucks.. but I'd sure as hell rather do that than be opened up and not have it go ahead.

| I shifted 10 kg before the op over nearly two months. My doc said that my op was easy as my liver was so small.
I don't know if I struck it lucky, but I think that effort paid off as I haven't had much post-op pain at all (none right now 7 days later), and I am tracking really well for recovery. I can get the 1.5 l/day minimum fluid down and it stays down.
Try to do it - I think it will help you be in a better position post surgery.

| I guess they all have preferences... but I think many recommend the pre-op diet so that the liver will shrink to make the risk of complications smaller. If the liver is easier for them to grab and move out of the way (which is more difficult if it's fatty and slippery and huge), then there is less chance of causing damage to it during the surgery.
I guess other surgeon's are okay with that level of risk and don't see it as a big deal or a big risk.

| hi Mamaraptor,
Funny thing Opti and Surgeons, most Surgeons will agree Opti does help in striping the Liver of fat. A liver that is not fatty is easier for the Surgeon to lift out of the way at the time of the operation, it helps to lessen the risks of the Liver being nicked during the Op.
Some Surgeons are happy to accept the risk that the Liver may be fatty and the operation may take longer due to extra care needed in shifting the Liver, others will not accept that risk hence insist on Opti.

| Hey Guys,
Just wondering everyone's thoughts on why some surgeons tell people to opti, and some don't. I understand it shrinks the liver etc. But it seems really cruel that some surgeons do and some dont?
