| Hi louie42.
I'm not sure what feflux is, or did you mean reflux. Gout is the result of too much uric acid in the blood causing crystals to form around the joints. The condition is thought to be hereditary but being overweight can increase the risk of developing the condition. The crystals that form in the joints cause inflammation and a world of pain. Risk factors for gout can include;
Drinking too much alcohol. Not drinking enough water. Eating certain foods that promote levels of uric acid, such as yeast-containing foods. Trauma e.g. from undergoing surgery. The use of some diuretics which cause the retention of too much uric acid. Hormonal changes. Consuming too much fructose.
Some preventatives for gout if you are prone to getting it can include
Drink enough water to help excrete uric acid. Avoid certain foods advised by your doctor to reduce uric acid levels in your blood. Cut excess alcohol consumption. Increase exercise. Manage high blood pressure.
Hope this helps louie42 | |

| It's not the high protein on it's own, it's a combination of high protein and not enough water. After going over hubby's eating and drinking habits the higher intake of protein is the only thing that has changed in the last little whiles which led our GP to the conclusion that MAY have been the cause. If people are already prone to gout, which hubby is, apparently the protein intake doesn't have to rise too much to have a possible effect. What is classed as high protein I'm not 100% sure as I'm not a GP, just passing on her info as I thought if there were any gout sufferers on the forum it might be handy for them to know. | |

| A diet which is VERY high in proteins containing high levels of purine is thought to be a contributory factor in causing gout. The levels that we should be eating are not likely to be problematic. It is really important to keep your water intake up whether you have gout or not (says she, reaching for a glass of Adam's ale). | |

| Just thought this was an interesting bit of info that hubby picked up from our GP today. He suffers from gout and although he hasn't had it in a while each attack is just as painful as the last. He went to our GP today for some meds and she said that a high protein diet and not enough water intake can be one of the causes of gout. I thought I would post this as if anyone does suffer from gout it is even more important for you to get your water in each day. | |
