| Thanks for your timely post. It seems when you are thinking about something on this forum someone writes about it! presto. Hope that you get some answers early and don't struggle on as I have.Get the runs pretty regularly and then have a short period of all normal then back to the runs again. Also pretty bad wind and pains at times. perhaps I had a touch of IBS pre sleeve, but this is definitely worse.
I am 14 months out and wondering if I have developed lactose intolerance or fat intolerance?
Anyone know of any good articles about this development post sleeve?
I've tried specifically avoiding fatty foods and then spefically avoiding dairy but can't seem to work out specific triggers.
Perhaps it's time for a visit to the gp and the nasty stool sample.... ugh.
Be grateful for any tips from people who ahve been diagnosed with dairy or fatty intolerances.

| I am over 2 years out and it was a daily occurance that a full cream flat white would have me doing the bolt. Ice cream, chocolate, anything too sweet, too fatty and too milky does it to me. Its calming down now, usually its once a day, I can't give up my flat white, and it saves me getting bunged up. In the first year or so I had some pretty close calls. | |

| BOY - did I ever have the runs. What an understatement. Mine was a case of "Oh gosh, I need to go - Oh gosh - too late"! I had noooooo holding power at all. But we are all very different. I have had IBS for 25 odd years. Have also had a benign tumor of rectum 25 yrs ago (sorry about the details but I think it all needs consideration). I have never had a lot of control. Fortunately I have very good friends who are more than used to me being like this and we can laugh about the amazing places I have done do do's. Having this sort of history, I was bound to encounter probs after this type of surgery. I was sleeved 25th Nov 2010. By mid Jan this year, I was having severe issues. However the issues eventually sorted themselves out by about May this year. I tried all sorts of things but my favoured fibre supplement (Metamucil) eventually reigned me in. But I had to adjust the dose. I used to have 2 heaped teaspoons in water but I have had to cut that back to 1 small level teaspoon in water. I could not tolerate other fibre products such as Benefibre etc. That's just my system, being peculiar. I also found that the post surgery diet of lots of soft or liquid foods plus drinking heaps of water was not good for my system. Lots of liquid in = lots of liquid out (and in a screaming hurry). I have found that during winter, I have been slack with the water intake so I have not needed the fibre. I have been fine now since May (touch wood). I still get a touch of diarrhoea sometimes but no more accidents. It will be interesting to see how I go coming into the drink lots of water season (summer).
I guess the reason I have told you this story is to let you know that we all have different internal systems and nuances and it depends on how healthy your system was prior to surgery. If your test results are all okay then just go easy on your body and give it some time. I personally think most of us underestimate just how long it takes our innards to heal and to get used to this new tummy. Be gentle on it. I know I was also over keen to get onto all sorts of foods as soon as possible and that sure as hell didn't help.
Hope this eases your mind

| Yes I still have runs once a day and I'm about 11 weeks out! It's not the cramping and bolting to the toilet type thankfully, but I think it's probably an intolerance of some sort since the surgery. As mentioned, a lot of people become intolerant to lactose post surgery.

| Thanks everyone 4 your answers, it's crap but kind of good to hear others also r going through what I am :(
My Drs r running some tests just to make sure I have no bugs but I'm sure it's my IBS so I'm hoping with time if I'm still having issues I can go back on my IBS meds.
Is there any in here who had his bum problem and for it to settle by itself?
I'm felling alot better today :) I don't really know what got into me yesterday had a good old cry over nothing well I thought nothing, i was cranky at myself as this is something I've been preparing for now for 16 months.

| Yes I have the bum issue as well. I am now 12 weeks post op and just figured that it was part iof having my new tiny tum!!
Maybe I should go to docs and get a test to see if I am lactose intolerant. That would be crap as I have a protein shake every morning for breakfast mixed with HI LO milk!!

| Lactose intolerance for me too - although I suspect I had suffered with it for some time before surgery also. Replacing normal milk with Zymil and avoiding all other lactose seems to work a treat, and has helped with digestion/tummy issues in general I think. 14 months post surgery and I don't take a chance with 'normal' milk any more - running to the loo every five minutes isn't such a good look long term! It was hard straight after surgery though as so many protein drinks are made with milk products. There are some protein fortified juices as an alternative option if you feel you want to try steering clear of the others.
As for the post-surgery blues: this is fairly common, and may be caused by a combination of limitations during recovery/stress/anxiety etc etc. You've been on a total rollercoaster of a ride, so it's only to be expected that you feel a little fragile right now. If you are feeling really down perhaps a call to the psychologist you saw pre-surgery or someone recommended by your surgical team?
All the best and hope you're feeling back to normal soon.

| Hi fleastar
I developed a lactose intolerance post-surgery, which I still have 10 months later. I also can't tolerate anything that has too much fat in it (i.e. full cream products and fried foods). I just dont do milk etc anymore (or I suffer). I figure that we have to expect some side effects after we have mucked around so much with our digestive systems. Try getting lactose free products.
All in all a few digestive problems is annoying but minor in the scheme of things once you start losing the stacks of weight!
Good luck and hang in there!

| I had the same too.. I was like that from around 4 days post op to 9 days post op... It does go away! I was told it can be a side effect from anesthetic/pain meds. | |

| Hi everyone
I'm 1 week post surgery n I'm having the issues with the runs :( I had IBS before surgery but was medicated n doing ok, I've spoke to the nurse from my Drs rooms and they told me to cut out any milky products. I've got to send a sample to be checked.
I'm wondering if there's anyone here this has happened to after surgery? And how long did it take to settle?
Also wondering if anyone got emotional after surgery? Today I've been kind of down prob due to the runs but just wondering of anyone else had a day or 2 feeling emotional?
