| Good luck chick and when you go, you will more than likely have a heap of blood tests. I was anemic before my first planned surgery and refused iron infusion and decided to hold off and take the tablets instead. It took just a month to get my iron back to normal. I am still on them because some of my cells were a bit stuffed so not 100% good yet but I didn't want to go to surgery and have dodgy blood. I'm having my next blood test in a few weeks, also known as when I get my act together!!!
Don't forget to get written letter from psych. I got my neuro to write it in the letter he sends to my GP after review and then got a copy for my surgeon.
I am glad my info helped you. Feel free to PM me if you have questions and I miss them on the forum. But, yeah, wait till all your meds are okay.
I have been told of I have seziures in the few days before my surgery I may not be operated on, depending on how I am. The anethetist will make the decsion on the day. |

| Hi Ricecake, Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me. It has answered a lot of my questions. I glad that the decision has been made for me, if that makes sense? I had misgivings about malabsorption from a nutritional perspective as my excessive restriction with the band meant that I couldn't eat a lot of healthy foods and ended up with severe aneamia and my hair was falling out. So the thought of going back there as well as having to re-jigg my meds was not appealing. I think that I may nearly have them sorted out, I hope! I'm seeing my psychiatrist on the 18th and will bring up the subject with him and get his input. I feel like I'm taking a heck of a lot of pills at the moment (in reality not that many) but I've recently been put on blood pressure and cholesterol meds due to my increasing weight in addition to the anti-depressants and mood stabilisers, oh and the pain medication for legs, back etc. Talk to you soon, Shannon | |

| I have epilepsy and was told at my consulation that malabsortption surgery would not even be considered. I am having the sleeve in January and take 14 pills a day ( a meal in itself!) for my epilepsy so I understand the worry. Even on them, I have a few episodes a month of minor seizures. I had an increase in one of my medications not long ago and it seems to be helping a bit. However, the doses had to be stable before surgery would be considered. My GP is managing this part because it's out of my surgeons scope. My epilepsy will never be 100% controlled so we had to get the best possible control before considering surgery and that took a good 6 months last year!
I decided against the band because the type of seizures I have make my stomach contract, kind of like the rollercoaster sensation and my abdominal muscles also contract and my current fat wobbles like a tsunami..I am hoping to get that down to just a small wave with less fat! No one could tell me if the band would slip if I had these type of seizures. Also, I get sick of going to the doctor so the idea of going for fills ect turned me off after I found that out!
With medication, you need to have a backup plan for if you are vomiting and can't take them. You may not need your backup plan but should have one pre arranged pre surgery. I have a back-up plan I hope I NEVER need...rectal (up yer bum) diazepam.
Also, consider you may be in hospital longer if you get drug interactions that cause drowsiness or something else.
So, it's possible to get the sleeve but you need to have been stable on your medication, doing it now whilst doses are being adjusted, well I think you'll be pushed to find a surgeon that will take it on.
If you see a psychiatrist, you may need there approval too. My neurologist wrote a letter to say he was happy for me to have the surgery and then as the weight came off, will see me more often as remember your doses may need adjusting again as your weight goes down! You need to take this into consideration if you work, you may need more time off. With my epilepsy, if the doses are too high, they actually aggrevate my seizures! I am planning for the worst.
Hope that helps, post back if you have any other questions. |

| Hello all, My name is Shannon and I have had a band which was removed due to being too tight from the word go. I went through three and a half years of vomitting and severe reflux. I ended up with a massive hiatal hernia and had my band removed when I had this fixed. I had lost 35kg with the band (but not in what I consider a safe way) which I have since put back on and then some. Since having my band removed I have been diagnosed with Bipolar II Disorder and am still trying to work out the right level of medication to stabilise this. I am looking to have WLS again and am in the process of finding out as much as I can about the rest of my options (don't want to go to band-town again!) I will be seeing a surgeon soon but am favouring the sleeve over the bypass as I don't want the malabsorption aspect of the bypass as my medication levels are very important for my condition. Does anyone else have a similar problem? Would love to hear others opinions on this. Thanks Shannon | |
