| Heidi,
I agree the government needs to do more and once I've had my surgery I'll be doing my damn best to petition whomever I need to, show up at whatever political events I need to and go on whatever tv shows or newspapers I need to, in order to get that message out there and MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!
So.... keep your eyes peeled for me in a few years ;) I'm making sure to take LOTS and LOTS of photos (even nude ones LOL) and doccument every single medical ailment I have so everyone can see the changes that take place both physically but also in saving the country money in the long run!! |

| LizzardLover that's awesome news!
I wish the Government would consider expanding these lists around the country - this surgery shouldn't just be for those who can afford it. The more healthy our community is, the less burden there will be on the health system in the future.
I hope your surgery date rolls around soon and good on you for being so determined.

| Hi guys,
I spent MONTHS making enquiries to find somewhere in Melbourne who does pulicly funded lap band or sleeve surgery. After being turned down by Monash (who apparently only do around 10 per YEAR public funded) and my local member for parliment trying to help, I finally found that BOX HILL hospital have an "obesity" clinic for weight loss surgery (it's on their website!). I simply sent in a referral from my local GP and got an appointment for the information session shortly after (june) and then appointment for 1 on 1 with the sugeon in September!
At the information session someone asked how long the wait is and they said it's 12-18months at present but that can vary naturally depending on the number of people going on the list. They generally do not "prioritise" their list because most people have several other co-morbidities so it's hard to say anyone one needs it more/less than others.
I was naturally over the MOON with this information as had heard many stories of 7-8 YEARS waiting lists.
Paying for private health insurance was not an option for me, I just can't afford it.
So next year sometime I hope to have my surgery. It will be 100% covered by the public system/medicare/whatever. I will have no out of pocket costs that I know of unless it's things like dietician/psych etc... which i'm happy to pay for. |

| Hi Lizardlover,
Can i ask what you mean by "public waiting list"? When i enquired to do the same medicare does not cover any band or sleeve procedure and i had to do it privately, any information would be great
Ive since had my sleeve procedure done on Aug 1st, and very happy with the results so far, good luck and hope to hear from you soon | |

| hi Lizard Lover
welcome to this inspirational amazing place. I have yet to the Surgeon but feel like im in the 'warm up' phase before getting to the 'start' gun. Im busily working my way through appointments with the Dietitician and Exercise Phys folks. to quote one of those pesky quotes, the trip is not in the destination but in the journey to get there. so i wish you a very pleasant ride

| Thanks for the welcome dakodasmum. The surgeon i'm seeing does both publicly though the vast majority of his patients choose the band. I'm hoping my choice to go the sleeve won't make my waiting time any longer since he doesnt do as many of those. |

| Name: LizzardLover Where your from: SE Melbourne How you found your way here: another forum suggested I look here.
Hi, i'm LizzardLover ;)
I'm a single mum to a 9yo girl and finally decided enough of the weight loss merry-go-round and i'm on the waiting list for public surgery. It should be around another 12 months before I make it to the top of the list, but i'm ok with the wait.
I recently had a bunch of testing done and have found out I have a "mass" in my liver which needs more testing to find out what it is. They think it's a benign thing, but need to make sure. My liver function is perfectly fine though and I don't have fatty liver so all is good and hopefully this won't impact on me getting my surgery!!!
I have considered both the band and the sleeve and initially thought I would go band..... but now feel strongly the sleeve is right for me. Will of course consult surgeon to make final decision.
Hope to see you all around :) |
