| Hey Applesauce
ooooh thanks for jogging my memory.........I think my intelligence and memory has been hijacked by the life sucking heat we are having at the moment .......I remember thanks to you, someone else vowing the cork under the sheet doing wonders for RLS............still laughing heartily at the mental image i have though !
Regardless of the hilarity of going to bed with a cork...I am going shopping for one tomorrow.....I have just checked the wine bottle from dinner and its a wanna be cork.....one of those new plastic ones........great for sliding back into a bottle but hopeless in bed !
Purplehaze, do you think you are up to giving the cork theory a tryout too ?

| I take magnesium tablets every night and also a bit or cork under my bottom sheet in the foot of my bed. Now stop laughing right now, because it works hehehehe. I took everything right down to anti epeleptic meds which I am still on for it and the cork worked BEST. I still do all the othr stuff but until I added the cork my legs drove me insane.

| HI Patty, goog luck with the optifast, I'm at the end of day five, doing all the right things, not finding it as difficult as I expected (not stuggling with wanting to eat other stuff) but am having trouble sleeping, am very flat and no energy. I think if I can get a few good nights sleep I will pick up. Couln't go to work on Friday as it was my third night of around 3 nights sleep. I did manage to sleep form 9am through to 1.40 but then didn't sleep well that night. Think I am too wired up, can I be wired up and flat at the same time?????? Found the first few days the hardest..
HI Cosi, my resless legs are the worst Ihave any had I think. Went to the pool today so am hoping that will help tonight. My doctor has tried me on a range of medicaitons, including Valium which I resisted for a long time, however that just made it worse. I do tend to have adverse reactions to some medication, they have the opposite effect, antihystamines keep me awake, Kalua (which I love) can keep me awake all night. Maybe I should have it in the morning bfore I go to work (hee hee).

| Happy Thanksgiving to you Patty...and you too Lou, not that we Aussie's really appreciate or even know too much about it, but I hope you had a happy one anyways :)
Patty, I wish you all the best with the Opti fast, it is hard, but after the 1st week, it's a lot more manageable. As Nicole said, most of us were restricted to just 3 shakes (or bars/soup/pudding) per day, but am sure there's a perfectly good reason why you'd need the 2 extra bars. You can have 1 cup of salad veges or steamed veges with your lunch or dinners, and I found that made the world of difference to my hunger. I ended up really looking forward to those veges. You can dress them up with fat free dressings or with fat free seasonings to make them tastier.
Good luck with it and I'm sooo jealous of your last meal....mmmm fried chicken and the turkey & mashed potato....oops I'm drooling :)

| Hi Purplehaze,
I feel your pain - lol. I too am a sufferer of Restless leg syndrome....its horrible ! I get less than half way thru a movie in the cinema and the pain sets in so that i am squirming around in my seat, sleeping does not come easily and even eating at a restaurant is disrupted. Any event where sitting still or lying down seems to bring it on & i get it bad.....I usually get up for a walk several times through the night and craaaaack my knees and ankles for relief.
Not much seems to help in my case, I was once prescribed the medication they give to Parkinson sufferers but it only helped for a short while. However I have heard of others finding Magnesium helps, vitamin E or eating a mango in the evening. Stretching the leg muscles through the day also is supposed to help - squats, quad & hamstring stretches if you're up to it. Best check with your GP though first.
I hope something helps you find relief soooooooooon.
Its great to see the recent influx of the already have been and the waiting to be sleevers from overseas joining up.
Happy Thanksgiving to those from the US for yesterday.
Smiles :) Bella | |

| Thanks for the tip re the potassium Kahuna. I'm third day optifast and for the last two nights have only slept 3 hours max each night. I vaguely remember this happening to me before on Optifast, should settle down in a day or two. I had a banana today. I get 'resless legs' where I can't keep my legs or feet still and magnesium powder usually helps but not in the last few days. Because I keep tensing my muscle with the restless legs I have felt some cramping but nothing too much at the moment. I have absolutely no energy. I am one of those people who has to restrain totally from things, there is no such thing as just a small bit so will head out shopping soon and stock on on the things I can eat aaaahhhhhh | |

| hey pattyk this really is an excellent site, so do use it. i've found the support a great help, with practical help as well as the more emotional side of things. i got sleeved on nov 13th, but we do things a little different in england as regards diet, so i'll leave that to your fellow americans or peeps from australia. but the surgery is pretty much the same i guess, and it's fab! good luck to you kat.x | |

| Welcome from one who's just North of you in Ventura County, PattyK. Where are you having yours done? Mine was done at the UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center.
If you don't care for the Optifast (I didn't), I found that the PureProtein shakes and bars were good substitutes. High in protein (shakes came in 29g and 35g versions and the bars came in 20g and 29g versions). Flavors are really good (in my opinion), and low (2g) in carbs. Check with your surgeon however. You can find them at Trader Joes.
I found that doing the post-op diet in reverse order really helped me with understanding and stocking the items I liked in preparing myself for post-op. Going to the mushies three weeks before, then liquids two weeks before, finally clear liquids a week before, and the purgative two days before.
Yes, you will be hungry somewhat (well, a lot!). I found that the sugar-free popsicles (15 cal. each) and pickles (5 cal. each) helped take some of that in between appetite. Do NOT take in breads, pastas, etc. under any circumstances! Also a food diary really helps with both pre- and post-op. Four months out and I'm still recording everything that enters my mouth and I will probably continue to do that for the rest of my life. It's all good.
As to the leg cramps, try a banana (it's considered a mushy if pureed). High in potassium. I found that helps.
Hope this information helps. It's all good and worth it in the end! Good luck on your journey!

| happy thanksgiving patty!
enjoy that fried chicken girl!
the opti isn't so bad, attitude is everything! we have an excellent thread about opti-fast in the pre-op section. almost everybody unites to have a moan there in the early days!
and 5 a day is an absolute luxury! so what do you do if you get hungry? you toughen up and try your hardest not to give in, that's what! because nothing is worth waking up post-op and finding out that your surgeon has sewn you back up without a sleeve.
as someone wisely wrote on here one day, this is your last diet, so make it work!
welcome to the forum patty, you'll get heaps of support from everyone.

| hi there,
I think you are lucky being able to have that much...most people here in australia are only allowed 3 shakes or you can replace them with the opti bars or puddings or soup.....and then you can have some vegies but not 5 things a day. Good luck with the opti stage, i found the strawberry shakes the nicest. Nicole

| Hi all
Well, it's Thanksgiving today. Going to have me some turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes. My friend is making me fried chicken as my celebretory last meal. Monday I start my 2 week journey on Optifast and then surgery on Dec 15th.
I hear bad and good things about the Optifast. I have to drink 3 shakes and 2 bars per day.......... is that going to be enough or will I be hungry? What do you do if you're hungry......... can I have chicken broth? Also, I've read about leg cramps while doing the optifast diet. Why does this happen? What do you do when it hits you?
Anyone want to get together - I live near LAX. Glad I found this site....... a wealth of information.
Thanks | |
