| Hey everyone!
I'm glad to finally have found a thread like this one =] I'm currently 18 and am possibly getting sleeved at the end of this year or the beginning of next year. I'd like to talk to the young ones about their experience with the sleeves. I'm finding it a bit hard to wrap my head around the idea of what it would be like for me to lose weight and I suppose I can't really go getting excited until I have an actual date booked (fingers crossed everything goes ok!)

| Hey Emma,
Im glad your appointment went well and you dont have to wait too long to get that horrible band out.
Just remember to not be too hard on yourself in the 3 months between ops, because you deserve some nice meals and nutrition after putting up with the poor band diet for so long. So dont stress if you gain a bit of weight...more important to give your body lots of vitamins that you might be low in! Enjoy that first sandwich!!
Good luck,
Love Cath x | |

| I was only 21 when I had my first appt with my surgeon... Took some time to decide band vs sleeve, had a phi mix up, waited my 12 months for my phi to kick in & was sleeved 10 days ago & I'm now 23. My surgeon never said anything about my age when I originally saw him. I feel really lucky that I've had the sleeve done at the age I am now. As you would have noticed, there are not many of us that are under 25 on this site, and if you ask pretty much anyone, they will all say that they wished the sleeve was available 20 years ago, etc etc. What I'm trying to say is I feel lucky that I'm in my early 20s, the age where you are pretty much starting your adult life properly, and I really am starting my life with my new tiny tum. My body will bounce back easier as I still have a lot of collagen/elasticity in my body.
I hope what I've said makes sense, it's late & I've had a long day lol.
Good luck to everyone who has upcoming surgeries, or thinking about it xx

Hi Jess, I'm gathering 3 months, because Alan said that, that is the minimum, but he said we'll have to wait until he see's the damage from the band. I have an appointment with him on the 24th October, so I'm gathering I'll find out my sleeve date then *finger's crossed*. All the best for your appointment!!

| Hi all,
I had my appointment with Alan Thomas today and now have a date for my band removal, 15th September. A little nervous and excited at the same time, lol. He couldn't find my port (but they've always had some trouble finding my port) so I'm off to have an x-ray this week, so we can locate it.
At first I was really nervous (I even went really red... I sometimess to do... very embarrassing) but he's a very nice man and I am thankful I went and am going to undertake this journey.
The day after my surgery I have an appointment with Nikki (the dietician), so that should be interesting.
Just thought I'd give you all a little update.
Emma :) | |

| Hi Emma,
I had an ap with Mr Thomas last week and he was talking about it being the ideal option for 18-60 year olds so i wouldn't worry. Not long to wait now!
Good luck, Jess | |

| my daugter who at the time was 19 got sleeved as she was morbid obese. she has since lost over 35kilos and looks and feels fantastic. seeing her going from a size 20 to a size 10 gives me great pleasure in seeing that. ( being young too her body has not sagged excet her bust has bounced back realy good)she decided to go for the sleeve after seeing how i was when i had mine done. she has no regrets and yes the surgion didnt want to do the sleeeve but he knew we would go elsewhere to do it and because we persisted he obliged and done it. he was pushing for the band but because of me weighing the options and discussed it with my daughter she wanted something long term with no major complications ( like i decided). nobody knows yet what the out come is for long term sleevers but it cant be worse than being over weight all your life.
neither of us have regrests as we know we will never go back being the over weight good sort chicks.
hope this helps.... | |

| Catbert, I am in Nth QLD and I had to go to a psychologist as part of the whole process and the psychologist said she sends a report to the surgeon. I actually really liked this idea and went back to the psychologist a 2nd time, only because she gave me a lot of advice, activities and information on things related to WHY I eat, WHY I am morbidly obese and strategies on coping before and after the surgery. She does all the appointments for the surgeon so was trained in the area.
I thought that it was common practise but it must just be my surgeon? Anyway, point is that if it isn't compulsory, if you're thinking about it I would recommend it and I am definitely someone who would never have gone to a psychologist beforehand.
Good Luck Everyone :) | |

No - I am in in the process of contacting them now - just trying to anticipate what might happen - I understand that for some surgeons it is part of standard procedure to have an evaluation done. Thanks for getting back to me

Hi - do you mind telling me who the surgeon was? My daughter has a referral to Dr Mosse but is worried because of her age,
My surgeon is Dr. Gananadha at Canberra Bariatric. He's really lovely. I've heard great things about Dr Mosse as well. I have tentatively booked my surgery for September 15 with him, I just have to have another consultation with him, where everything will be finalised! It's all happening! How old is your daughter? My daughter is 17 - BMI 45+ - she is very intelligent and strong willed, and has seen both her mother and I struggle with weight all our lives, with some serious health effects. She has lost weight at times in the past, but as I did, she is able to put it all back on quickly with extra. I think she knows her own mind on this and she has my support - although I worry it may appear that she has fixed on this solution because of the positive impact it has had on my life.
She has a referral from her GP and I am going to be making an appointment today. Did Canberra Bariatric require psychiatric / psychological evaluation? They did not for me, but I am an old man :) I didn't have to have psychiatric / psychological evaluation at all. I just made my appointment with Dr. Gananadha and we went over my options. He tentatively booked me for surgery at that appointment, but he wanted me to spend some time to really think about what I wanted. I've done this in the past month and a half or so, and going back to see him next Friday. My mother has also had the procedure, so I'm quite familiar with it all. Did Canberra Bariatric say that your daughter would have to have psychological evaluation?

| Hi ladies ! I was 22 when I got my band and had it removed when I was 24 and was then sleeved 3 months later at 24.
My first piece of advice to you is this- try to avoid the band like the plague. In the short time I had it, I has a slip and a leak so after having a couple more surgeries to correct those faults, I STILL wasn't losing weight and that just wasn't sitting well with me. So I looked into the sleeve and here I am. Don't get me wrong the sleeve is still hard work and somedays I think "I just want to eat, give me my bloody stomach back!!," but I'm losing weight consistently. Now I've started walking again it's really started to come off again.
I understand- I've also been obese my whole life- having seen my first paediatrician and dietician when I was 3, so I know where you're coming from and where you're at. If you're like me and find yourself at 22 (now 25) and you've been on every diet/lifestyle change/ exercise program there is to no avail and you've exhausted all your other options, then this is it.
What have we got to loss at the end of the day, apart from our weight, misery and the baggage that comes with it all ?
If you want advice or just want to chat I'm available anytime. Just PM me. S Xx

| How do they even know your age when you call for an appointment? It's really none of the receptionist's business. They should make the appts and leave the surgical decisions to the surgeons. | |

I also rang Jon Armstrong but the recpetionist said he wouldn't touch me.. because of my age, but that's alright. Thanking you Emma
