Hi Googster! I just saw Dr Armstrong yesterday, very very confident in him. My surgery is on 10th May!! So it can be as quick as that!!

I am so excited so I wonder are you too?? Apart from worrying about DH, can you even believe the rest of your life is about to start??!!

Check out his website, it's soooo informative: www.westernobesitysurgery.com.au

Good luck!!

Hi green stargazer,
Thanks for all ur info.. it is great to see another person with PCOS who has had the sleeve.. I was just so unsure it would work... but seeing your results & reading ur diary it has put my mind at ease...

I am wanting to make an appointment with the DR to get the ball moving, but I told my DH that I wouldn't make any decisions until I went and saw a counsellor to get my head in order but I know that this is something that I want to do.., 2 weeks ago I was depressed and down in the dumps about my weight and I felt like there was no end to my heart ache.. but finding this site and seeing everyone stories and all the information has given me hope, a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders and I emotionally feel so much better... I honestly cant fathom that one day I could be slim skinny even... every time i think about it i get so excited...

My next questions to everyone, I have read in a couple of diaries that you had to get the scope down ur throat does everyone have to have that?? and what's it for??

Hi leishy,

I'm new here too and have PCOS.

I was really overwhelmed and upset when I first researched the sleeve as an option for weight loss. I then saw a GP who I'd heard was really on top of all things PCOS and she was not only supportive of the sleeve but hugely encouraging. She put it in really simple terms - I was heading towards diabetes, heart disease (I'm pretty sure she said something along the lines of medical data shows they can almost guarantee I'm about 5-10 years away from a heart attack Will the Sleeve work for me- Unsure and Scared Perth!!! 878453) and the thing that really scared me was when she said if left, the cysts have been linked to ovarian cancer.

I feel I don't have choice, by getting the sleeve done I am saving my life. I realize that may sound corny, but my health is out of control and I don't feel like I have any other options left.

I know how difficult it was for me to come to this decision ... several days of tears, so I just told my DH what I was feeling and thinking and gave him some links to info on the sleeve and a YouTube clip and let him mull over the facts for a week. In the meantime, i turned to my sister in law and my closest girlfriend, and used them as sounding boards.

The next thing I knew I had come to terms with it (even excited about it) and DH was on board and fully supportive.

It's a lot for you both to take in. Don't rush.

Hi Leishy,

Would definitely recommend Jon Armstrong too.. He is exceptional. Am loving my new sleeve. Like you I have struggled all my life with my weight. I was a binger too. Eat very little most of the time (dieting) and then would cut sick. The worst part is that it got worse and worse as I got older.. It is scary how much I could fit in in a 10 min period. I was sleeved in December and feel amazing... The beautiful thing it that I spent soo much of my life depriving myself of certain foods that I would crave them so bad and then eat everything I could find, now I can have anything I want (and because I can only fit in a small amount) don't get those nasty urges anymore, in fact I hardly ever eat those foods anymore....

I know Jon said before I had my op that I shouldn't get pregnant for at least 12 months after the op and that you need to be very very careful because as you lose weight so fast you because extremely fertile... so you may need to be careful..

Good luck

Leishy I also have PCOS and had insulin resistance - so diabetic in the next year or so.

I do have kids - twin boys...Lucky me. So I didn't have to worry about babies and small tummies.

Like everything I do in life...I just went and had the sleeve done, asked a few questions, read a few diaries and made up my mind.

My best mate tried to talk me out of it, she was scared about complications and honestly thought I didn't need to do this. She and I are the same height and were very similar in weights - we could swap clothes.
I was 96 kgs when sleeved and she is approx 100kg

I am 2.5 months out from surgery - I have lost 17 kgs and she is now making an appointment to also go and have the surgery done Will the Sleeve work for me- Unsure and Scared Perth!!! 314562

Aquarius I would be trying for a baby until I have hit my goal weight... I dont want to be over weight and unhealthy and trying to have a baby or even trying to have a baby.. I am sure that once I have hit my goal weight and I work with a Dr and a nutritionist that the baby would be getting what it needs.. thanks for the information, it is really great to have as much information as possible to make this major choice..

I have loved ready diaries I am still a little worried especially the bit just after the surgery... doesn't sound very fun... But i am tough I am sure that I will be able to get through it..

I am going to see a counsellor on the 12th April to get my head a little straight, the other week I was so depressed and upset so am getting some things off my chest and once my head is clear I will make a decision...
I am about 98% sure I will have the sleeve surgery done... once I have seen the counsellor I will organising my first appointment with the DR and get the ball rolling...

I have decided not to tell any of my friends they are all just too judgemental and I don't need that.. the only people who will know will be my Mum and Dad who are so supportive it isnt funny... and my husband...
One thing I am looking forward to is the day that I wont be the Fat chick in my group of friends.. I know that sounds really superficial but I know what they say behind my back and what they think... But no longer..

Just the thought of being to fit into normal clothes and that shopping wont depress me will be so good.. I am getting really excited... I know that this is the road I need to take to take control of my life and get it back... to be 28 and happy!!

I just wanted to say A HUGE thanks for everyone for all ur support and stories to help me through this though process... Will the Sleeve work for me- Unsure and Scared Perth!!! 217555

I might need to think about starting my own diary...

Leishy22, hi there and welcome to the site. I had my sleeve seven and a half weeks ago; and I love it.

My GP was on my back to have a lap band because of my health for two years; I gave in and said I would go to the specialist and listen to him. Dr Jon Armstrong, I had already seen for other health matters prior to this and I think he is fantastic, great surgeon, great bedside manner, and very interested in yourself as a real person. He said the Lap Band was not in my best interests, and talked to me about the sleeve op; he said he could get me in to have the op in three weeks. I waited as I was still unsure that the risk was worth it; I saw Jon in June 2010, and in Oct/Nov with the assistance of everyone on this site; and my research I had done; I decided to go ahead with the sleeve op. (better live a long life than the five years I was told I had left) I elected to wait until February 2011, as I wanted to be sure that the risks were worth it. (I thought better to live five years, as I was. I must say, the risks on me were higher than most) I normally could loose weight to a point; and they would all come back and bring there mates along for the ride; the yo yo effect, since before my teens.

I haven't been this weight, I am now, for over twenty years; I have lost just under 20 Kgs; my health has already improved dramatically; and I am off of most of my medications.

The only regret I have is I didn't have the op sooner; though with the research I did, I went into it with a vast knowledge and wasn't scared or apprehensive at all.

I LOVE my Tiny Tummy, and I am not hungry. One more thing, compared to other people (and my OH would say the same); prior to the op I never thought I ate a lot, and I ate a lot less than most people. example 1 sandwich at lunch time, 1 dinner plate size at dinner time. Now I realize that the amount I was eating was too much. At present I only eat 1/4 of a sandwich at lunch or a cruskit with one boiled egg, is a push to complete in one sitting. My OH is amazed at how little I eat now, so am I, though saying this I believe it is early days and I will fit in a little more with time. I still have to make healthy food choices; it is not easy; though it is a lot easier than pre-op, knowing the varmits will never return and it gives me more of an incentive, as I watch the scales go down.

Good luck on your journey.

Medically speaking women should not fall pregnant within the first year after gastric sleeve surgery. The reason doctors state this is because of the minimal nutrition your stomach can receive.

You need to speak with the surgeon about your aspirations to get pregnant so he can advise.

All the best,

I would thoroughly recommend Dr Alan Thomas. I am from the country and was able to stay longer in hospital just in case but didn't need to. Everything went great. My husband was the same as yours and now he thinks it is the best thing I have ever done for myself. He went with me to see Dr Thomas and Dr Thomas is great at answering any questions. The only reason I had to wait 12 months was for Private Health Insurance. Otherwise you can have it done as soon as there is an opening.

Have a read of my diary if you wish. I was as detailed as I could be about every aspect of my journey. From my fears beforehand, through the waiting, the surgery and where I am now. I was done in September 2009. Last year two of my friends had the surgery with Dr Thomas and are very happy with their results too. He is a lovely doctor and does a really good job. Has a 100% success rate as well which helps. lol

Any more question feel free to ask.

Oh Ok.. thats not too bad.. the reason why I was asking was because I have seen on here that people are waiting a year.. I was a little concerned about that..

Hey Leishy,
From first appointment to surgery was 3.5 weeks for me - mind you I had waited 12 months for my PHI to kick in. You might think 3.5 wks is short, but for me it was too long!!!! LMAO

Ok So I am not scared any more.. well not as much as I was...

I am constantly thinking about the sleeve.. in a good way though... I am getting a little excited like I am taking the first steps at getting my life headed in the right direction...

PiercedMumma08 I read your diary from start to finish it was great to read...

I think my husband thinks that because I am not a huge eater to begin with that this isn't going to work for me.. but I told him the other night that I may not be a huge eater but I binge... and when I binge I eat the wrong sort of stuff... which makes me fat...
But I am going to do what he asks and keep a food diary of what I eat and take it in to the Dr and show him... I have showed him a couple of videos I know he will come a round well I hope he will come around... I know he loves me and he just wants me to really think about this...

My next question is how long does the whole process take?? from having ur first Dr's appointment to the surgery...

Thanks for all the advice everyone... Anyone from Perth in the same boat or who has the same back ground as me who has had the sleeve or in the process or getting it down...

Hi Leishy

If you want to read a story/ diary about a nervous sleever- read mine. I was soooooo unsure this surgery wouldnt work for me. I was so convinced that the operation wouldnt work for me and i would continue to overeat and gain more weight.

Well.

Im 7 months out and 53 kilos down. I can eat whatever, whenever- its just the portion issue has been controlled for me. I still make sure I make better choices for meals, but its now like "everything in moderation". So if i go out with friends and eat something that isnt the best choice, its ok- because its not like ive eaten a heap of it, or eaten it everyday for the last month!

I also believe that this surgery has changed my life. I have never been able to lose this kind of weight without feeling sick, deprived, etc etc.

I hope you will find inspiration in the stories here and also be confident in your decision.

Best wishes,

N

Leishy22,

i was told by my doctor last week the only thing that will help me was surgery. My husband was there with me, he wasn't impressed. But I sat him down at the puter and he read up on what is involved and he has now changed his mind. Try and get your husband to have a look even look at the youtube videos of people. I am yet to see the doctor about it all, I still have this journey ahead of me :-) .

Would also like to add that everytime the GP mentioned it to me before I actually took offense to him suggesting it, then realised I have to step into the real world and face reality sometime, which is what I have done.

Lieshy22

If you read some of the diaries in here, a lot of family members think that you can just diet, and all will be fine. My family were the same way.

This is not 'the easy way out' despite what your husband, and my family said. Who the Hell would choose to do this if they had not tried everything, only to fail time and time again? Not me, certainly! One poster said that it costs her $7000 per year on Jenny Craig, only to fail and put it all back on again!

My health was declining. I had developed Type 2 Diabetes, my cholesterol was way up...

Tell your husband to check out this site, and allay his fears. What you need now is help and support, not derision! Ask him to be a part of your journey. Involve him, and help him to understand that by doing this you will not be slowly killing yourself with food and yo yo dieting, but you are adding 20 healthy years to your life!

If I had not had this operation, I felt that I would have died from a stroke, heart attack or worse by age 60.

The sleeve has given me back my LIFE.

Hi Ladies,
thanks so much for ur information... I am getting a little more confident on the idea everyday.. My husband is not keen at all.. So I am in the process of getting him on board.. He seems to think that I am trying to take the easy way out but getting surgery and not trying dieting and exercise more.. But he doesnt get how hard it is for me.. I lose the weight it comes back on I lose the weight it comes back on... hopefully I can get him 100% or even 80% behind me on this...

Now the next questions is what Dr to see... I am in Perth...

I really hope that this is going to be for me.. it is sort of my last hope...

Hi Leishy

I am your height and was about your weight when I had my sleeve done in January 2009. I went from size 22 to size 12 in seven months and two years on I am still size 12.

I eat everything and anything only in smaller serves ie my main meal is on a entree sized plate and 1 round of sandwiches does me for lunch. I was told prior to the op I would probably not be able to drink and eat at the same time. I have no problems having a glass of wine or two prior to a meal.

My health is 100% better, my demeanour is heaps better and I now actually like myself. Everybody I know has commented on how much confidence I have now and how happy I look with in myself.

I was very lucky and had no problems with the sleeve at all. The only time I actually felt ill was a couple of times in the early months after the op when I went to restuarants, I ate too much and had to bring it back up.

It is the best thing you can possibly do for yourself.......GO for it!!!!!!!

Lieshy, it is the best thing you will do for your health. I was sleeved two weeks ago, and I feel fantastic! I don't feel hungry anymore, but I still enjoy food, just smaller portions. I have lost 13kg, and it is EASY!

There are a lot of women who had the sleeve done so they could have a baby, there is a thread on here and pictures of women with their babies AFTER being sleeved. Feel free to browse all the threads, and ask ANY question you like. Everyone is very helpful, honest and supportive.

I did not have a camera in my stomach, but some surgeons insist. I only have 5 little key holes. I don't miss being ALWAYS starving! Now I can eat a little of what I like, and be satisfied. I am on puree at the moment, the next stage is 'soft', then I transition to normal food.

I am looking forward to a LITTLE lobster!

hi leishy,
i am new to this site as well. though i would like to encourage you not to be scared. i have booked in for the sleeve for january next year and by best friend has just yesterday had the sleeve bone. i went to visit her today and after only 24 hours she is up walking, going to the bathroom and drinking. having said that she said she had a rough time for the first 24 hours including feeling really sick in her gut and wanting to vomit. she thinks she may be out of hospital on thursday if all is well, she has to wear pressure stockings and she had to give herself a needle (blood thinning i think) at home the night before.

i have now done most of my preparation for the operation, which included dietician appiontments, phycologist appointments and of course sessions with my surgeon. i have to have a camera put into my stomach at a later date to ensure nothing is wrong with my digetive system. I believe this is standard procedure but am not sure.

all of these things are worth it in my opinion, hope this helps

also with the sleeve the section of the tummy which is removed is part of the tummy which releases appetite hormones, hence the appetite is decreased once operation is done, unlike the band.

Hi Leishy I too have struggled with my weight for so many years as well. I have lost quite a bit at times only to gradually put it back on. I haven't had my sleeve yet but am booked in to have it on the 10th of May. I haven't had fertility problems so sorry can't offer any advice there. My surgeon is Jon Armstrong could I maybe suggest that you make an appt and see him he is very easy to talk to and explains all aspects of the sleeve both the benefits and the risks, he is certainly not pushy and told me at the end of my appt to go home and think about it and then to ring them back if i wanted to go ahead with it, he could probably answer most of your questions regarding your fertility treatment.

Hope this helps and best of luck with what you decide

Hi All,
I am very new to this site, only found it yesterday... I will give a little back ground of myself first..
27 Female 5'9 and weighing 111-113kg...
I have PCOS and borderline type 2 diabetes

I can honestly say that I have been on a diet my whole entire life with no great success...
2 years ago I got down to 93kgs with diet an exercise my husband and I did fertility treatments and put 10Kgs on in a week.. feel pregnant but had a miscarriage...
It has now been over a year and I am back up to my original starting weight form 2 years ago...
I was thinking about getting the banding done, but have read so many negative and hassles with it eg: having to go back and get fillers, it slipping replacing it...
once reading all of that I was sure that the sleeve was more for me... But as I read on and find out more information the scarier I get...
it is FOREVER it cant be reversed.. will it work for me.. will my weight come back on when we try for another baby and take hormones...
But I am so unhappy being over weight that I know that losing the weight my life will be so much more positive...

Can anyone give me any advice or share their stories if they are in a similar boat to me...

Thanks
