| Oh no, this is horrible news :( Some great suggestions re calling up other PHI to see what your options are though. Worth trying anything. Is it worth calling your PHI for another chat? If you explain your situation, and asking if there are any other options rather than waiting the 12 months? OR, I wonder how you would go if you found another health fund that would help you out, and then calling yours, and saying, Ive found 'x' fund who can provide me with better cover, what can you offer me to stay with your fund...in other words try and negotiate if you can. I really really hope you can sort this out and work out a way to have your surgery sooner rather than later. But remember, if you do have to wait 12 months, you can do that!! You know you are strong enough to handle anything :) | |

| Adelaide Jess, I am so sorry that this has happened to you. Please don't give up hope! Is there any way you can access for superannuation? If the band has slipped or corroded, it might be considered a 'life saving' procedure. Exhaust all your avenues if you can, first. Call Medibank Private, or another PHI and ask if you can change and have a shorter waiting time. They want your dollars! | |

| Jess Contact Mutal Community, see if you can swap your cover over to them and does your original date of Oct this year still stand, you may be happily surprised. My Mother had coverage with health partners then worked out i get much more with mutal for only a dollar or two more so one phone call later she switched and no extra wait times, so worth trying hon. keep us posted hugs amanda | |

| I hear ya Jess Insurance is such a racket!! The cash price for a Sleeve in Lafafayette is approx 14,000-15,000.....My insurance would not cover me so I switched to my wifes insurance and had my Sleeve done March 14 and my only regreat is did not do this years ago. Here is the part about the insurance thing that makes me CRAZY!! I got my bill in from the Hospital and being that I have insurance suddenely that bill alone not counting the surgeron was $28,000 How can that be when cash price for the Hospital and surgeon is 14,000-15,000!!!! WOW | |

| I got a call on Friday from Ashford Hospital to say that my PHI will only cover part of the band removal surgery and so I need to pay $5000. I said that's fine I really want the surgery. Then I called dr France's rooms and I was told that dr France only operates on atients with full coverage. Needless to say I was devastated! I immediately called my insurance and found out that for an extra 10 bucks a month I get coverage for the op! Unbelievable! All the money I have been paying for insurance and when I actually need it it's only part coverage. So I upgraded my insurance but now it's a 12 month wait until they will pay for the surgery. So angry. Angry at the receptionist for not saying to check my insurance coverage, angry with myself for not checking it, angry with mbf for not telling me I am not covered for the op when I spoke to them while filling out my admission forms. And to be told less that a week before I was going to have the operation. I am absolutely gutted. Looked into going to Mexico for the surgery. Now thinking I will need to shop around for someone who will do it without PHI. almost makes me want to give up on it all. Having to wait until oct for the sleeve was doing my head in, but the thought of a whole year I just don't think I can last that long. : | |

| Hello and welcome Jess. I too also had the band, then had it removed. Best decision I ever made was to have the sleeve. Best wishes for the band removal. Hopefully you don't have to wait too long for the sleeve surgery.

| Hi there, I am Jess, 28, Adelaide. I currently have a gastric band but it has been a 8 year disaster story. So my current weight loss journey officially starts today. I met my surgeon Michael France and he is as fantastic as everyone says. The last surgeon I saw had that surgeon complex where they are cold and clinical, but Dr France is lovely, made me feel comfortable and optimistic about the future. For the first time I didn't feel judged about my band, that I was to blame, that if I had just tried harder it would have worked, he was like ok that didn't work let's try this. The blood clot issue his assistant GP was so worried about at my appointment last week seemed minor to him and he quickly said I may just need to take warfarin after my surgery for a while. He explained the sleeve surgery and it is so logical. Instead of messing with where fluid enters and exits the stomach, it removes the part of the stomach which expands. Speaking of surgery I am booked in for my removal and penciled in for my sleeve surgery too! It was amazing how happy I felt when I left. Light at the end of the tunnel happy. I can't believe that by Easter this horrible band will be gone forever! I watched a YouTube video of a band removal and I have a better appreciation of the separate operations now. Also splitting up the operations splits the cost, which is a big help for me. So my goal now is to lose as much weight as possible doing the shakes before my surgery to make it easier on me and the surgery team. Very exciting.:D | |
