| Hi there,
I am just wondering if anyone can tell me how long they waited for gastric sleeve surgery under public funding auckland recently? My doctor referred me today- but said it would be months before someone contacted me for my initial consultation/meeting- which is understandable, but I have no idea what i am in for.. months, 1 year, 5 years?
cheers :) | |

| I too self funded as there was no guarantee that Southern Cross would pay and didn't have to wait long until the surgeon set my date - actually I was a little surprised at exactly how fast things moved along - I expected a bit of time to get my head around things. Anyway, over and done with now and all is good. Good luck for the 20th lillygirl. | |

| I am being done on 20th Jan and met the surgeon on 10 Dec. The only reason that I had to wait was because of Xmas break and the 20th was the first surgery time for the year. I have funded this myself and am going through Southern Obesity Surgery in Chch. Like you Isis I was offered both options but had done research prior to consultation and decided that sleeve was the way to go!!! Cheers | |

| Yes there are waiting lists for both Auckland and Counties Manukau DHB's
I am STILL waiting on the Counties Manukau waiting list and I have been since September 2009
I think the wait for most is about 6 months - I just had added complications which have involved 4 'other' abdominal surgeries | |

| I also paid my own way and was sleeved 2 months after my first appointment to look into lapband surgery (my surgeon gave me both options and the sleeve was better for me). I was told at the clinic that unless you live in Auckland (where the DHB funds some operations based on overall health and income I believe) you can't get the op on the public health system. If you have health insurance you can apparently get funded or at least partially funded. I don't have health insurance and even if I had I'm sure obesity surgery would have been exempt from my policy as I have been overweight since my teens! Having said this, I have absolutely no regrets about the $25 000 the op cost me - I just look at it as a good investment in my future :) | |

| Hi Hibi...and welcome. I had my surgery privately in Auckland...and was on the table within 3 weeks of meeting my surgeon. I had done all my research and was definately not going to change my mind, so bought my opti and whamo!! - was in I think there is a reasonably long wait time IF you can manage to meet the criteria to get it done via our Health system. My BMI was not high enough and I was not prepared to wait for my health to deteriorate further, so decided the best option was to self fund. Good luck | |
