I think I understand now why my Dr was so worried with me flying back to the south island only 7 days after the surgery (there are no specialists down here who do the sleeve). I'm sorry you had such a rough time of it. I'm guessing from the list of proceedures in your signature that recovery hasn't been quick or easy, I hope you are better now.

| I had a leak. I did not have any symptoms until the 7th day after surgery, when I became extremely ill very very quickly. The pain was was absolutely excruciating, and I could hardly move. I would have been happy to fall asleep and not wake up. I had to have emergency surgery, or, as my surgeon so bluntly told me, I would die. And I nearly did. I had to stay in hospital for a further 2 months and had tubes coming out of everywhere. My left lung filled with fluid and had to be drained. I had a nasal gastric tube for a 6 weeks. I had drain tubes out of my abdomen and a catheter. I had to be fed through a tube into my small bowel and could not eat or drink anything for those 2 months. It was a nightmare. A woman in the next room to me with the same gastric sleeve surgery did not make it. She fought for her life for a few months, but sadly she died.
You would know if you had a leak. It's a lot more serious than flu like symptoms.

| Apparently the symptoms in general are very similar to a flu but the particular one to watch out for is a rapid rise in temperature. Does your GP know that you've had a sleeve? Normally I work on the 40 C = get to the Doctor, above 40 & climbing call an ambulance (we live 30 mins each way from a hospital) cos 42 C = dead. In this instance, just having had a sleeve you might want to talk to your GP & see what s/he thinks however it sounds to me as if you're probably fine. Just keep an eye on your temperature & talk to your GP. Better safe than sorry.
In general if you haven't 'discovered' a leak after the first 10 days then you are fine, but there have been cases where a minor leak has been missed because the body forms a cyst around it to try and contain the leak while your stomach heals. If this fails then you can 'develop' a leak (and the symptoms) after the usual high risk period. This is rare but does occur often enough that it is a good idea to be careful of yourself & your stomach for a few extra weeks. | |

| Hey Sammi, Hope all is going well for you. Alex told me she came to visit you. She was my rock when I had my surgery. I am now almost 2 weeks (on Wed) post-op and am having no probs at all. Alex is jealous of how much I can eat and drink. Take care x | |

| You dont get leaks they happen at the time of surgery, sometimes tho they can give no problems for upto two weeks. it is the infections in your abdominal cavity from stomach acid and food coming out of your stomach that makes you ill. tiny leaks can happen and heal in a matter of days with nothing getting out. sometimes those tiny leaks get bigger with infection and thus you get sick a week or so later.

| Thanks mapmar, I'm feeling ok surgically, I just got this awful bloody cold that's making me feel all sorry for myself =( and then I started overthinking and realised I know absolutely nothing about leaks !! Is it true after the 2 wk mark if you haven't had a leak you won't get one ? | |

| You would definitely know if you have a leak... you get unwell very quickly... In any case, if you feel unwell then see your gp/surgeon or go to the emergency dept..... | |
