| Good on you Ms. Marquetta. In my opinion, this is one of the most important jobs we have as a mum (or Mom, in your case) - to educate our children to be able to have the knowlege and confidence to make great choices in their own lives. Bravo to you for doing just this. | |

| my daughter will b 4 years old next month. i have had a love affair with food for the past 30 years (my entire life) majority of my family r heavy (over weight). i will die trying 2 make my daughters life different in terms of food choices and the importance of being healthy. yes this will b hard. i am a food addict and i hope not 2 b a hypocrite because i dont want my child 2 go through the things i went through & what i may go through n the future. i thank god for having a bright kids who is smarter then her years. she is catching on 2 what i am teaching her. i pray i can maintain a healthier lifestyle n terms of food choice. every now and again she will ask for mcdonalds nuggets. i dont mind. because her indulgence n nuggets will b n moderation. | |

| I think that raising children is about educating them - and this includes food choices. I don't think that there is any benefit in banning foods. As the mother of a 4 year old I am concious of the food behaviours and choices I am modelling for my child. While I personally could eat take-away/crap food on a daily basis I DON'T do this. We have the occasional take-away meal as part of our family life, but moderation is the key. I am the product of a family who used food as a 'reward' - I understand that this was the norm for many of my generation, but I truly believe that my relationship with food today is partially a result of that. When I'm feelind down, sad, under the weather, I instantly 'reward' myself with food to make myself feel better. I hope to finish this reward cycle with me. That's just my opinion! Carah x | |

| I think I did a bad job at explaining that. I mean sure give kids macdonalds etc but make it NO big deal, mcdonalds tonight mum is to busy to cook not lets have a treat and have mcdonalds. dont make a fuss out of it dont make a big deal out of it and dont make it a treat a reward or anything like that. Make it part of everyday life. Just teach your children from an early age to make good choices, my daughter for instance refused to drink anything but water until she was about 12 even at mcdonalds even before you saw bottled water every where we had to take our own.
my kids will choose subway and the healthy choices from subway at that and yes 6inchs not upsized 9 out of 10 times for take away. Sure my kids still go to mcdonalds and hungry jacks and maybe even kfc but that is pretty rare seeing the daugher is vegetarian. the daughter yeap orders chips the son a quarter pounder neither up size both drink either water or diet coke. yea I know the bad on diet soft drinks, but I give a pass on that to them they are both 16 now.

| Maybe not a reward but a treat occaisionally yes. 2 of DD's friends were absolutely NOT allowed any sort of 'rubbish' food ever. 1, in primary school (whose treat food was crystalized ginger, dried fruit), bullied & stole to get money for crap or the others to give her their crap. The other went absolutely crazy eating junk food when she got her own money.
All in moderation! Some foods needs more moderation than others. lol

| It is very important to NEVER make junk food a reward or a treat. it eads to all sorts of problems down the line especially for those who end up emotional eaters and our kids get their genes and habbits from US those who needed surgery to control out food problems.

Can I say though I have 4 kids but I will say 3 as one is a baby but my oldest if very healthy....go to maccas and he orders a seared chick wrap, apple pieces and water. ds#2 brought up the same way is a food fiend...my god he would eat and eat and eat crap all day..he has a food addiction I think... my daughter will eat half good and half crap..they were all brought up the same way..I am strict with their "all in moderation" etc but still let them have junk... my oldest will pick healthy everytime..sometimes it is personalitites so I wouldnt say all your friends kids gorge crap because they arent allowed it..some kids just love crap food...like me..lol

Not sure what this has to do with the original post but I guess I just wanted to share that im proud of the efforts Ive taken so that my daughter doesnt end up with the same issues i have. Does that make sense? Proud you should be, good for you! A big part of the problem these days is that it isn't a sometimes food for the majority of people. It's become an everyday food, so a lot of kids, sadly, don't know any different.

| Well Id like to say how proud I am about my daughter's life and the way im raising her:
Of course, I LOVE my McDonalds (im pre sleeve) and am quite addicted to it, but I am proud to say that when I had my daughter I made the conscious decision to raise her with the "moderation" principle. I didnt want her to have the same addiction and problems with food that I have- as a child or an adult.
So, we have always allowed her to have it as a "sometimes" food and explained that its not healthy but its ok every now and then (we'd be lucky to have it or KFC once a month).
This "theory" of mine was put to the test sometime ago. I got home late from work, I was tired and hadnt prepared anything for dinner. I said to her (she was about 4.5 years at the time) and I said "let's go to Maccas, i cant be bothered cooking". And she said "nah mum, i dont feel like it, can I have trees (brocolli) and mased potatoes?". So we cooked. I couldn't ignore her request for vegetables! She will often sit up to a plate of potatoes, brocolli, carrots, corn, and cauliflower. Good huh?
I was so proud because I knew then that my methods were paying off!
Its interesting to see though how many friends of ours with children who have never experienced or had junk food - they seriously GORGE themselves when given the chance.....my daughter now, will even leave a plate of chips just because she would rather have something else.
I am hopeful that this will continue into her adult life where she knows that yes, its there, no its not great, but its ok every now and then.
Not sure what this has to do with the original post but I guess I just wanted to share that im proud of the efforts Ive taken so that my daughter doesnt end up with the same issues i have. Does that make sense?

| mcdonalds is something your daughter is going to face all her life and the ability to avoid it as a teen is impossible. Peer pressure is a shocking. Reading up on all the calories NOW on the food and teaching your daughter HOW to choose food wisely from fast food places will give her a head start in both developing the correct choice making and taste buds that LIKE the healthier food on offer.
