Sorry I can't help out on the accommodation side of things, but I was in Melbourne for the day for work a couple of weeks. The cab fare from the airport to Collins St was around $48 (thank goodness for Cabcharge), but they do have Skybus. http://www.skybus.com.au/ which is only $16 one way.

I am going to Melbourne this Sunday! If any of you know
someone who is looking for a share mate (preferably apartment or flat)
near the city please let me know and if u can let me know asap it will be great...
